Butterfly Effect

Viele visuelle Regie-Tricks, eine unglaublich intensive Handlung, eine geheimnisvolle Stimmung und ein schöner mysteriöser und emotionaler Soundtrack. Das alles ist fesselnd und vermittelt ein beeindruckendes und rührendes Erlebnis. Wenn man aber aktiver nachdenkt, stolpert man. Manche Wendungen sind nur effektvoll und knüpfen nicht an den Sinn des vorigen Geschehens an (warum ist er nicht mehrmals in einen Augenblick zurückgekehrt und warum hat er nicht die Umstände so ausgefeilt, damit alles perfekt ist?!). Es ist eigentlich eine naivere Version von 12 Monkeys, in der es nicht um den Weltuntergang, sondern um Liebe geht. (06.11.2004)

During the first act the chills made a car track out of my back, about halfway through I had no idea were it was going and the unexpected shifts in the plot kept me on my toes, and by the end I was one more satisfied viewer. A dense atmosphere, excellent direction and an interesting story make The Butterfly Effect a movie that won't let you catch your breath. Then even the logical holes in the script and the fact that the theme of temporal paradoxes is not revelatory (and has been handled better in many other movies) can be forgiven. This film has a lot of appeal. And, by the way, Amy Smart is gorgeous. (22.01.2005)

Quite a disappointment. I expected something interesting, like Donnie Darko, but alas. The Butterfly Effect is a viewer-friendly film aimed at an undemanding younger audience, the games with time are only for effect and without any depth. It is watchable, but it doesn’t have a chance to win my heart. (24.09.2008)

Im Gegensatz zum Vergiss mein nicht! hat Butterfly Effect einen weitaus stärkeren Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen - dank seiner Atmosphäre, dem erstaunlichen Gefälle sowie der flotten Regieführung. Auf der anderen Seite: die Durchgearbeitetheit der Liebeslinie ist schwächer. Die Idee, das Gedächtnis zu abzuändern, ist de facto identisch und hätte vielleicht etwas mehr Tiefgründigkeit verdient (dies werde ich erst beurteilen, nachdem ich mir den Streifen zum zweiten Mal hineinziehe) und weniger TV-Buntstifte bei den Liebesszenen verdient. Jedoch das Spiel mit den kausalen Linien wird jedoch vollends übersichtlich, sauber und atemberaubend gespielt, die unentwegten Wendungen, die im Maschinengewehrtempo ablaufende Schnittarbeit sowie die Änderungen von Raum-Zeit-Perspektiven haben mich buchstäblich festgefroren und mich gezwungen, diesen unkonventionellen Liebes-Science-Fiction-Mix atemlos zu betrachten. Schauspielerisch war ich von Evan recht beeindruckt, der nicht nur visuell an Danny aus Shining erinnert. Seine Wandlung hin zu einem erwachsenen Abbild von ihm selbst haben bei mir ein angenehmes Frösteln hervorgerufen. Das Regisseurpaar hat sich unter einem in der Tat bedeutenden und erfolgreichen Akt unterschrieben. Butterfly Effect ist eines der besten Science-Fiction-Dramen, die je in den USA gedreht wurden. Daher vergebe ich ihm selbst das Happy End ... (02.02.2007)

Where its genre brothers (for instance, 12 Monkeys or Donnie Darko) in their complexity are just starting to warm up they’re wheels of logic, The Butterfly Effect with its “plot based and time paradox" line are still standing at a red light. Even so, it’s still a good movie, especially in the first half. After that the screenwriters (and, because they also directed it, the directors too) start running out of breath and ideas, while Kutcher runs out of talent. The whole movie starts to sink into the waters of mediocrity, with one cliché after another, and only thanks to the timely ending it didn’t sink even lower. (05.06.2004)

Constant hopelessness and despair in a perfect package of time jumps and subsequent catastrophes. At a time when the Fateful Touch was still an unknown video cult, I remained scalded in front of the screen, because such a directorial debut is a made miracle. There aren't many movies where the viewer wishes for a happy ending more, because there are too many constant bad ones for one nervous system. Sometimes we only achieve victory through sacrifices. The psycho beginning aside, this is a nice and sensual film. However, I was quite confused in the first few minutes and had absolutely no idea who was getting the beating. Then it got clearer and I couldn't stop staring. Ashton Kutcher played like we haven't seen him before and Amy Smart was a great partner for him. I experienced that killing feeling of helplessness with them to the maximum. And it scares me just to think that someone would sacrifice themselves for me like that without me ever knowing about it. I even shed a tear at the end. Nice, 4 stars. (07.02.2012)

I haven't seen such a good handling of the concept of time travel in a very long time. And what's more, the whole project is full of originality and imagination. (17.04.2005)

Well… Hmmmm… I was expecting a lot more. If Donnie Darko disappoints me like this, I'll probably stop trusting the judgement of some of my friends. Kutcher is a moron and the story is worthless. (23.11.2009)

Ein hervorragendes Filmerlebnis. Eine originelle Handlung, die mich absolut verschlang. Nur selten passiert es mir, wenn ich mich auf irgendeinen Film unglaublich freue, dass der Grad der Zufriedenheit dem Grad der Vorfreude entspricht. Viele Freunde hatten mir Butterfly Effect empfohlen, und als ich den Film schließlich gesehen hatte, musste ich allen recht geben. Das Thema des Schmetterlingseffekts hatte ich bereits in einem französischen Streifen mit Audrey Tautou gesehen, doch die Franzosen hatten ihn etwas anders aufgefasst, im Stile von "Amélie“. Aston Kutcher ist nicht nur ein hervorragender Unterhalter bei seiner Sendung auf MTV, sondern auch ein toller Schauspieler, und Amy Smart, die spielt nur in interessanten Filmen. Bravo. I was definitely expecting more from this film, at least based on the reviews, the word of mouth and the audience reviews. But after it was over, I thought it was pretty obvious how this was going to end, so what's so bombastic about it? It's definitely a good subject, but they could have gleaned a whole lot more from it. (06.12.2017)

The idea that we could travel back in time and change the past as we see fit is so appealing that even I sometimes get swept away by a film that tells this story. Here, however, the frequent illogicality of the plot spoiled the overall impression. Even Ashton Kutcher couldn’t save it. He is nice to look at, but unfortunately, that's about it. I’m not sure how to approach this movie. On the one hand, it is excellently filmed, and the overall concept and atmosphere of the movie were really captivating. Even Ashton Kutcher, one of my least favorite actors in Hollywood, seemed likeable. On the other hand, I really couldn’t bear the last 20 minutes. Maybe it's because I don't like the sight of blood, the subject of mental illness or who knows why. The atmosphere of the movie made me physically sick and I had to pause it a few times, because it even gave me a slight headache, that’s how much it got to me. A great movie with atmosphere, but I can't tell you what my reaction will be the second time I watch The Butterfly Effect as I’m not planning to do so anytime soon. (14.10.2015)
