Predators

Adrien Brody ist OK, aber Liam Neeson wäre besser. :) Die Scharfschützin Alice Braga ist die Beste aus dem Team. Eine Identifizierung mit Silvestris Soundtrack-Klassik kommt gleich in den ersten Sekunden. Die Musikmotive, welche die Welt des Originals charakterisieren, blieben erhalten und wurden vernünftig genutzt. Die Drehbuchautoren blieben auch den Schlüsselelementen und -Prinzipien der Handlung treu, auf welchen das Original baute. Es ist kein Diebstahl, es ist ein Zitieren, bei dem der eigene Verstand genutzt wurde. Mit Respekt zum Original und vor allem mit einer unverhohlenen und begeisterten Liebe zu ihm. Mit dem niedrigen Budget ist Rodriguez’ Bande ein kleines Wunder gelungen. Also wenigstens in der ersten Hälfte, der ich 5 Sterne geben würde und die mich in die Zeiten zurückversetzt hat, in denen ich unter dem Einfluss vom Zauber der Filmbilder stand. Die zweite Hälfte, die mit der Ankunft von Fishburnes Figur beginnt, möchte "cool & in“ sein und setzt deshalb auf (überflüssige) unerwartete Wenden. Sie spielt mehr mit den ursprünglichen Elementen, was für mich vielleicht problematischer als für die neue (Morpheus-)Generation ist, welche keine Beziehung zum Original hat und auch bei diesem Genre geistreichere Drehbücher gewohnt ist. Die Reinheit des Originals geht so verloren. Damit kann man aber nichts machen, es musste zu einem Upgrade kommen. Die Schäden sind aber nicht groß, weil der Film immer noch von der Schändung und der Leichtsinnigkeit weit entfernt ist, welche parasitierende Crossovers Alien vs. Predator angerichtet haben. Ihr schlechtes Renommee wird bestimmt auch die Einnahmen von diesem Werk negativ beeinflussen. Das hat aber der Film Predators nicht verdient. Auch wenn er nicht so effektvoll endet, wie er beginnt, und die Karten woanders mischt (ein existenzielleres Resümee, welches auch Planet der Affen die Ehre erweist? :)), bleibt er für eine lange Zeit das einzige solide und gelungene Sequel von einem Phänomen aus den 80ern. After “Arnie’s” first one, this is hands down the best film in the Predator universe, though the original holds that first place mainly for the cult status it has gained over the years. By this I mean that both are basically the same, but whereas Predators is intentionally silly in a cute 1980s way, in Predator  that’s unintentional and therefore better (or worse, depending on how you see it), thanks to is earnestness. Nimrod Antal proves that the fears about his choice as director were unwarranted. I wasn’t expecting any interesting directorial tricks, but Predators is a film where the craftsmanship and the sense for execution and atmosphere are more than enough. I had a little problem with Adrien Brody, who’s maybe a bit too good a character actor for the role. In short, Predators is almost excellent, I got exactly what I wanted. PS: “Die, you space faggot” is almost as great as “You’re one ugly motherfucker”… (08.07.2010)

If I wanted to use a strong word, I’d probably use "disappointment" first, but "wasted potential" seems more appropriate with hindsight. Antal is talented, there’s no denying it because for two hours I felt like I was watching unadulterated 1980s carnage. It’s aided by good cinematography, and Debney’s brilliant soundtrack (those native drums just work even twenty-three years later). The present bunch is worse. True, I can't expect psychological miniatures, but... damn, couldn't it have been stretched for a few more minutes so we could learn a little more about them? There are all sorts of excuses for this, such as the fact that action movies were made this way when the first film was made. But what do you do with one random survivor and a nutcase with a scalpel? It’s also hard to love a film where I have to hit my head a lot to shake the memory of any significant action out of it. In that regard, I'll be eagerly awaiting the Director's Cut on DVD. Until then, it gets a hesitant 3 ½ stars. PS: The first half earns five stars. (09.07.2010)

The weakest predators in the history of film were playing cat and mouse with the worst soldiers on the face of the Earth. Adrien Brody put on about 15 kilograms of muscle for this role, yet he still looks like a stick. Goggins, on the other hand, generally plays fags in most movies and here he is supposed to put in an absolute performance worthy of the SAS. Neither of them managed to clear that hurdle. It looks embarrassing, and what’s even worse is the Chinese guy, who swordfights one of the predators. I don’t know if the predators were just sick of what a bunch of amateurs those morons were, of they were the weakest predators ever. However, both those things made sure that even otherwise good ideas were buried with everything else in this film. (03.10.2016)

Antal has an incredible sensitivity for getting that eighties feeling right, in the end Brody surprisingly doesn’t seem like Arnie’s androgynous embryo (in the ending sequence his muscle-bound body was particularly impressive... or else CGI technology is much more advanced that I thought) and so only the more expensive half away from the jungle is the only thing that spoils it; not that it’s outright bad, but it lags far behind the first half in terms of quality. In the better half, it’s so good that it is better than the original. (09.07.2010)

Predators would like to appear as an enriching tribute to the original, but they turn out to be a weaker and oddly strange remake. Unfortunately, what worked twenty years ago as an uncompromising rampage now occasionally seems amusing and tiresome in a more psychological sense. The disappointment is even greater because the introduction, full of confused tough guys and tension, promised a lot. However, when the script decides to involve the strategic side of things in the finale and clumsily adds complications and twists involving the characters themselves, everything goes downhill. Not even the good acting duo of Brody-Grace can save it. 50% (08.01.2011)

Hier kann man sehr gut sehen, welchen Respekt Rodriguez und Antal vor dem Original haben. Auf den ersten Blick (oder besser gesagt in den Trailern) sieht es wie Teil eins aus, nur statt einer Einsatztruppe, die im Dschungel umherläuft, haben wir eine Gruppe von Mördern und statt eines unsichtbaren Predators bekommen wir gleich drei. Obwohl einige Charaktere früher sterben, als man anfangs vermuten könnte, wird ihre Besetzung sicherlich gefallen. Natürlich gibt es nur einen Schwarzenegger, aber die Gruppe der Sprüche klopfenden und rücksichtslosen Schurken, die langsam erkennen, in was für eine Scheiße sie geraten sind, reicht mir völlig aus. Dazu kommen viele Anspielungen auf das Original, wie das blinde Feuern aus Maschinenpistolen in den Dschungel, ein fairer Kampf zwischen einem Asiaten und dem Predator, eine Gruppenszene beim Abseilen vom Wasserfall und ähnliche Kniffe. Fans des ersten Films kann ich die Predators nur empfehlen, denn da haucht angenehme Nostalgie. (18.07.2010)

Too bad there wasn’t more money, it could have been a great picture. Anyway, it’s made by fans, for fans, and that really showed on Predators. Blood, even the green kind, flows in copious amounts, there’s a thousand and one snappy lines, and, most importantly, it honors the original. Adrien Brody is ripped, I wasn’t expecting such a scrawny little guy to get in shape like this (maybe it’s time for me to hit the gym, if he can do it, why can’t I? :D) and his Royce is the classic type of soldier that you can’t help but fall in love with. The same goes for Oleg Taktarov and the Yakuza guy. A mention belongs to Topher Grace, who spiced the whole cast up very nicely. But casting Laurence Fishburne was a big mistake, he spoiled the whole middle of the movie. He wasn’t the right guy for the Noland character and overall held the movie back. Antal did a fine job, and thanks to him everything runs like clockwork, and the whole movie flows along nicely. This is also thanks to John Debney, who utilizes every last note of Silvestri’s original score, subtly embellishing it here and there for a more modern fit. P.S.: I wish I could say that more often about other translators too, but alas I cannot. (20.08.2010)

A tribute to the old films with all the trimmings. The slightly identical structure of the plot (a group of mercenaries, dying one by one, etc.) bothered me, but that’s probably the only flaw. The action starts right in the first seconds of the film, it has brilliant one-liners, solidly outlined characters, and the Adrien Brody is brutally cool, to the point where I didn't even want to believe it. The old good music, original sounds, and pleasantly “restored” effects, with their backbone still original, and even better. (23.07.2010)

Zwei Sterne. Predators ist ein B-Movie – ein schlechter B-Movie. Ich habe mich auf diesen Film wirklich gefreut und alles Mögliche erwartet. Ich hätte aber nicht gedacht, dass er so uninteressant sein wird. Das finde ich sehr schade, es ist eine große vergeudete Chance. Folgendes hat mich gestört: In dem Film gibt es nur wenige Predators (ich weiß nicht, wie es bei den anderen Zuschauer*innen war, ich habe aber aufgrund des Titels und des Trailers viel mehr Predators erwartet). Sie sind erst nach fünfundzwanzig Minuten erschienen (nach einer schönen Schießerei im Lager). Im Rest des Films waren sie dann nicht besonders oft zu sehen. Sie haben immer nur irgendwo herausgeguckt, jemanden getötet und das war’s. Außerdem gibt es hier nur einen klassischen Predator – der Rest ist eine "neue Art" mit einem unschönen "Design" (ich verstehe nicht, warum sie nicht vom Studio Stan Winston gemacht wurden). Adrien Brody in der Hauptrolle hat mich nicht gestört, er hat mir aber auch nicht imponiert. Bei den anderen sah es schlimmer aus. Zu den Figuren habe ich praktisch keine Beziehung aufgebaut (sie waren entweder schlecht geschrieben oder bekamen bedauernswert wenig Raum). Ihre knallharten Sprüche klangen mehr oder weniger billig (einschließlich der von Danny Trejo, ach ja). Die Stimmung wurde wahrscheinlich am meisten dadurch verdorben, dass das Publikum längst wusste, was Sache ist. Die Figuren ahnten nicht, was sie im Dschungel jagen, und haben sich ständig gewundert. Ihr wachsames Umschauen hat die Zuschauer*innen nicht besonders interessiert. Spannung = 0. Die positiven Seiten: Ein paar ziemlich gut aufgenommene Szenen (der Anfang, die Szene im Lager, das Feuer-Finale) und die Musik, die jedoch zu 90 % von Silvestri stammt. John Debney hat sie eigentlich "nur" bearbeitet und neue Elemente hinzugefügt. Ich habe es schon am Anfang gesagt und bestätige es jetzt noch einmal – zwei Sterne. Das Niveau vom ersten Film ist unerreichbar. Predator 2 ist ein sehr solider Film. Alien vs. Predator und Aliens vs. Predator 2 sind schlecht, dieser Film ist nur ein bisschen besser. It is very clear that Roberto as a producer really took care (from the cast, to the director, to the soundtrack, etc.). I have to agree that the first half is more mysterious, more suspenseful, and much more atmospheric; the second half lags a bit compared to the first, but still the result is great.
