Paul - so nennt sich der kleine grüne Besserwisser - hat 60 Jahre in der geheimsten aller Geheimbasen herumgelungert und hat jetzt offenbar etwas Wichtigeres vor. Verfolgt vom FBI und vom fanatischen Vater einer jungen Frau, die unfreiwillig Teil der ungewöhnlichen Truppe geworden ist, hecken Graeme und Clive einen holprigen Plan aus, wie sie Paul zu seinem Mutterschiff zurückbringen können. Und während sich die beiden Nerds als Fluchthelfer abmühen, ist ihr kleiner grüner Freund dabei, die hoffnungslosen Sonderlinge zu Helden des Universums zu machen. (Verleiher-Text)

A missed opportunity with a not very dazzling joke (but at least not insulting to the intelligence), where one of the few things that sticks in the viewer's head are the occasional juicy guffaws and Simon Pegg's wig. Sigourney Weaver’s cameo at the end was great.

The trailers gave me the impression that it would be some kind of childish and embarrassingly vulgar nonsense, but I like science fiction and I gave Paul a chance, even though I was almost sure I would bury it later. And lo and behold! It’s pretty funny. A nice wisecracking comedy that as a bonus sticks its tongue out to Christianity several times. I had fun. 75 %

I went to the cinema for an unplanned movie. If I had read the plot summary, I probably wouldn't have gone to see it. But then I would have missed out on an excellent comedy with a memorable alien and two cool dudes. I haven't heard so many bad words in one sentence from a one-eyed Christian woman in a long time. And if Paul ever falls down, I want to be there! Quite a brilliant film. 75%

Relaxing entertainment with the nicest alien this year. Paul, with a perfect voice-over by Seth Rogen, excellently complements the good old Simon Pegg and Nick Frost duo. The movie is packed with references to every movie possible (Spielberg’s voice cameo is faultless) from Star Wars to Spiderman and back again. An excellent atmosphere, full of effing and blinding in the unrated version, is maintained throughout the movie and, during the ending, when things end up exactly the way you expected, you sigh with emotion, these movies simply have a heart. - Paul? - Yeah. It’s a nickname, it stuck. My ship landed... on a dog. That’s OK.

Nach Pirates of the Caribbean - Fremde Gezeiten eine nächste Enttäuschung (diesmal war ich ein bisschen weniger enttäuscht, weil ich mich auf Paul - Ein Alien auf der Flucht nicht so sehr gefreut habe). Ich war überrascht, wie unbritisch diese britische Komödie ist, wie wenig Witze die Drehbuchautoren zusammengebracht haben, wie langweilig die Regie von Mottola ist… Und vor allem… Wie ununterhaltsam die Herren Pegg und Frost waren. Warum mussten es ausgerechnet die beiden ausbaden? Was nützt es, dass mir Pauls Animation, seine angenehme Stimme und die Anspielungen auf Star Wars, Spielberg, Star Trek oder Roswell gefallen haben? Wozu war die Anwesenheit von Sigourney Weaver und der bezaubernden Kristen Wiig (Jemand sollte für sie, verdammt nochmal, endlich eine richtige Rolle schreiben!) gut? Was für einen Sinn hatten all die anderen Dinge, wenn alles so langwierig wirkte? Ganz zu schweigen von den "saftigen" Schimpfwörtern. Meiner Meinung nach ist Paul - Ein Alien auf der Flucht eine große vergeudete Chance, die außerdem (!) dem letzten Teil der Cornetto-Trilogie von Wright, Pegg und Frost schaden kann. Ich befürchte nämlich Folgendes: Wenn er in die Kinos kommt, werden die Leute denken, dass es wieder die zwei Aliens sind. Und sie werden nicht ins Kino gehen. Schuld daran werden die Drehbuchautoren von Paul - Ein Alien auf der Flucht sein, an deren misslungene Science-Fiction-Komödie aus dem Jahr 2011 sich kaum jemand erinnern wird. Zweieinhalb Sterne. Fanboys war besser.

In diesem Film ist perfekt zu sehen, wie es endet, wenn britischer und amerikanischer Humor aufeinanderprallen. Auch wie der britische Humor perfekt funktioniert, während der amerikanische überhaupt nicht. Das Duo Nick+Frost ist etwas schwächer, aber immer noch unterhaltsam und voller Anspielungen auf bekannte Sci-Fi, was ein Fan zu schätzen weiß.

The idea that an alien being, an until recently fundamentalist Christian, and two basement nerds discover the world and are therefore not particularly different from each other has wonderful potential and invites endlessly funny confrontations worth multiple series. So why the funniest component of the film is a federal "higher power" on their asses is indeed a mystery. It's probably because the screenwriter decided that if there weren't at least 16 lighter moments in every scene, it just wouldn't be it. Unfortunately, though, he didn't think any deeper about the fact that to make it work it's good to build on the jokes and build up the jokes, not drop them like eggs onto a conveyor belt. As such, though Paul makes it through quite deftly every time it threatens to get bogged down in the ballast of sentimentality, just as often you'll find yourself while watching it dropping a "he he he" and a "why" in the same sentence.

Despite the clichés and a hint of sentimentality in the ending, I found myself enjoying the film. Simon Pegg's style gets me every time – flaws and all, the guy can make me laugh. Nick Frost has the same effect on me. Plus, there's something delightful about someone expressing a blind (or semi-blind) faith in a higher power. I could almost hear the sound of fanatical Christians grinding their teeth. Overall, this film managed to lift my mood and I haven't even mentioned the joy of having Kristen Wiig in the mix. / Lesson learned: Choose the location for your final speech very, very carefully.

Excellent comedy with one alien, which shows that the Pegg/Frost duo can work even without director Edgar Wright's guidance. Additionally, it's a great opportunity for Seth Rogen, who showcases his best acting, that is, his voice. For nerds, it's almost a must-watch, perhaps that's why I liked it so much.

I honestly like the work of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost a lot. It's a slightly different kind of humor that, when done well and tastefully (and that's really true in this case), usually works brilliantly. Another very ill-matched (or well-matched?) pair of protagonists who live in their own worlds, yearn for an alien encounter, and their collisions with the real world usually end in disaster. The cadence of jokes and gags may not be as killer this time around as in, say, Hot Fuzz, but it's richly balanced by the laid-back atmosphere that oozes from the entire film, and I actually liked the slight pathos at the end quite a bit.

Leider habe ich ja von Paul etwas anderes erwartet, als am Ende rauskam. Ich mag Filme mit Pegg und Frost vor allem wegen des trockenen britischen Humors der beiden, der hier allerdings überhaupt nicht zum vorschein kam. Ich bin der Meinung, würden sie die Regie dem dritten aus ihrem Trio überlassen, Edgar Wright, wäre das Potenzial des Films viel mehr ausgeschöpft. Im Film spielen die beiden nur die zweite Geige, der jenige der am Strang zieht, ist der allzeit bekiffte Außerirdische Paul. Seine digitale Bearbeitung und alle Grimassen, die er macht, sind absolut makellos. Was man vom Humor nicht mehr behaupten kann, es gab zwar Andeutungen, die bekannte Science-Fiction Werke parodierten, aber das meiste war klassischer amerikanischer blöder Humor. Das ist einer der Gründe, warum die britischen Schauspieler keine Chance hatten, einen nennenswerten Beitrag zu leisten. Wenn ich meine Erwartungen beiseitelasse, habe ich immer noch eine überdurchschnittliche Komödie bekommen, die aber viel mehr auf den Kasten haben könnte.
