Spider-Man - A New Universe

Probably the most comic book-like film I’ve ever seen. The art and formal style alone deserve praise, but it also works in terms of script, and much better than most the live-action counterparts. What drags a little perhaps is the emotional aspect, but that may well be my problem – animated films hardly ever arouse any emotions in me. What is worth noting, though, is how Spider-verse effortlessly portrays a distinctive black hero without hardly anyone feeling weird about it. Miles Morales is a very likeable and very well written character; unlike that overrated Black Panther, whose enthusiastic reviews were collected on political orders, because they can’t be explained otherwise. A total rush. I needed to put my brain into standby mode. Instead, I let myself wallow for two hours in an absolutely uncompromising barrage of flashy visuals, at the heart of which flows an unspectacular story that showers nerd hearts with references, jokes, and winks, while never leaving the clueless non-comics reader behind. It stuffs into it a tangle of full-bodied and likable characters who can come for the pompous personal outputs and cut the cobwebs into the viewer's heart, which, in this case, was beating at about a hundred and fifty percent. That is because this is sheer filmmaking exhibitionism, into which someone has put an awful lot of money and even more creative freedom. Yet the result, although it overflows the usual rules and genre norms must satisfy, in the end, even the most conformist viewer, who in the end will find that Sony has bluntly swept away a decade of the Marvel Universe in 111 minutes. Miles Morales was an ordinary student and teenager before he was bitten by a radioactive spider. Now he must learn to control his powers and become a hero before a strange experiment destroys all of New York. Fortunately, he will get the help of spider heroes from other dimensions... and it's great. The animated Spidey is an aggressive, brisk and modern ride that is great to watch thanks to brilliant comic book styling, has excellent action and works in both humour and drama. Plus, it cleverly uses the fact that in animated form, you can come up with crazy things that wouldn't work in live-action. One of the best comic book films of recent years, and quite possibly the best Spider-Man ever. (11.12.2018)

Comic-book movies are obsolete, unimaginative, completely the same, resting on its laurels, although often still, fortunately, they are entertaining enough. They seem to be becoming idle, where everybody in the industry is afraid to change anything, and everyone is doing almost exactly the same thing. And suddenly, surprisingly that a comic book with a big (not only) K, which shows where the genre would go, comes from Sony company (although thanks to the local energy it is more likely to arrive) with a playfulness, imaginativeness, originality and comic essence. However, even if it finds followers, it will hardly be overcome. However, he undoubtedly has shortcoming. Above all, it tries to be very emotional, but it doesn't always succeed. The bigger snag is that he's trying to catch all the spider hares in the world. As a result, both the negatives and most of the parallel Spideys are reprehensibly unused or outright in number, and the whole thing is a bit overpaid (but this is true of everything under the auspices of the Lord / Miller duo). Even so, it is clearly the best superhero comic book since the Big Six. (15.12.2018)

I was skeptical about this film and I was most worried about the formal aspect, which is not exactly dazzling, but in the end I had an unexpectedly pleasant time and the visuals didn't bother me that much (except for Kingpin, who looked terrible). It's got pace, a nice soundtrack, occasionally the humour works and there's a twist. I was a bit annoyed by the Japanese girl and the pig, they seemed a bit over the line, but it was bearable. Since the days the Wachowski siblings’ Speed Racer, this is the first film that conceptually works with colours and that captures every scene with its formal and stylistic creativity, as well as with its spellbinding kinetic nature. In addition to that, it is an incredible revelation in the field of animation that has no genealogical predecessor among feature films. The roots of this unique picture – and thus of its individual techniques – rather lie in video games and online videos. Despite that, however, we still cannot find any other single film that would bring them together in the same way. (15.01.2019)

A flick packed with ideas in which one Spidey has a tight-fitting sweatpants cover his belly and the second is a complete pig for a change. When it comes to Spiderman’s adventures, the plot with parallel universes is nothing out of the ordinary, but the production is a whole category higher. In addition to planting a wealth of hidden references in the movie, Lord and Miller followed their comic-fan hearts and instinct for doling out emotions and action scenes. The animation is somewhere between digital and hand-drawn and, for the first time in a long time, I felt sorry for not watching it in 3D because it’s clear that the picture is unbelievably lively and ideal for that technology. I was expecting an easy-going kids’ movie and got the surprise of the year. (16.12.2018)

Comicverfilmungen wirkten bisher im Großen und Ganzen eher wie arme Verwandte. Und leider war dies auch bei den besten Spiel- und Animationsfilmen oft der Fall. Denn sie kamen oft nicht an die Möglichkeiten der Geschichten aus den Comicheften, ihren Mut und ihre Kreativität heran. Aber dieses Mal: Spider-Man - A New Universe erinnerte die Kinobesucher auch an die Möglichkeiten der Comicerzählung, was hervorragend ist. Dabei spreche ich nicht einmal von der Kreativität im Bereich der Animation. (26.10.2019)

Eine liebevolle Explosion von Ideen, die offensichtlich nicht nur Spider-Man mag, sondern Comics überhaupt. Die Animation ist sehr originell, die Stilisierung oft völlig verrückt, aber gleichzeitig schrecklich beeindruckend. Und wenn man denkt, dass es nichts mehr gibt, was noch verrückter sein könnte, ist es auf einmal da. Was aber meiner Meinung nach am wichtigsten ist – es handelt sich nicht nur um eine wilde Komödie. Der Film ist nämlich in stillen und intimen Szenen, in denen die Emotionen zum Vorschein kommen, genauso stark, vielleicht noch stärker. Es ist einfach ein verdammt lustiger und wirklich gelungener Film mit einer rührenden Widmung für die Autoren Lee und Ditko. Und ich möchte lieber nicht wissen, wie viele Details ich beim ersten Mal nicht bemerkt habe. (20.12.2018)

If I was a fan of comics, this would be the film of my life. As a film lover, I admired that extravagant and inventive barrage of plays with style, split screens, intensive editing and frantic action (not to mention the bombastic music), but by the end I was saturated and after the interdimensional encounter, I only watched that whirlwind of audiovisual perfection chasing the mandatory conclusion. A ground-breaking and impressive piece of work, no doubt, live action Spidey can never get close to this. 85% (27.02.2019)

Der neueste Spider-Man ist sicherlich ein höchst origineller und einzigartiger Film, was die visuelle Gestaltung und die Erzählweise angeht, und verdient die volle Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums und eine Kinoprojektion, da die unübersehbaren Bilder auf der kleinen Leinwand völlig verloren gehen würden. Anfangs fand ich die Animation etwas ruckelig und unnatürlich, aber nach einer Weile hat man sich in die Materie hineingefunden und konnte die sehr originalgetreuen Bilder des Comics genießen. So ist der Film richtig flott, mäßig humorvoll, und das i-Tüpfelchen sind die letzten zwanzig Minuten, die mega-actionreich und für das Auge eines normalen Sterblichen bisweilen recht anspruchsvoll sind. Ein solides Stück aus dem Marvel-Universum, das aber seinen eigenen Weg geht, und das macht es sehr gut. (22.12.2018)

Viel reifer und raffinierter als die aktuelle gespielte Version. Hier wimmelt es auch nur so von berühmten Namen, die den Figuren ihre Stimme verliehen haben, die Geschichte hat Sinn und Überraschungen und einen herausragenden Bösewicht – meine erste Begegnung mit Kingpin. The animation was perfect. I felt as if the comic book had come to life in front of me, and the individual Spiders were great. In fact, all the characters were perfect, the story was well written, and I enjoyed it. The creators managed to provide decent suspense, and they made me laugh with quite a few great one-liners. The film should probably be avoided by epileptics. Otherwise, I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to have fun. (10.03.2019)

When someone can take all the important Spider-Man props, plus they're very well versed in pop culture, plus the whole thing is framed by really original and breathtaking animation, there's just nothing to discuss (as the cat in the Moneta commercial would say). The writers of this animated Spider-Man really put a lot of thought into the creative process, because such a cleverly written comic book story is almost a rarity in this overexposed age of comic book adaptations. Undoubtedly the best animated movie of the last decade and one of the best superhero movies ever. It came at a moment when many were starting to doubt the potential of bringing something new to the genre. Lord and Miller had already proved many times that each of their creations turns into gold and gained trust from Sony Pictures, who really need fixing their reputation, and hit the jackpot with their unique style. This Spider-Man definitely has the best comic book style, and it is the most action-packed, frantic and by far the most original one. Everything is moving at such a breakneck speed that some characters may get slightly less space than they would otherwise deserve. But the creators were aware of the riskiness of this project, so they laid all their cards on the table and poured all the ideas that came to their mind into it and it worked liked a charm. Although the whole thing with the dimensions is overelaborate and insane, everything falls perfectly into place without losing any of the humor or insight, and all the main characters are extremely likeable. There haven’t been many movies this year which I would enjoy so much and apart from an amazing atmosphere, great animation, humor and perhaps the best Stan Lee cameo, it is, above all, an incredibly original comic book movie.
