Underworld

Der Schlüssel zu Underworld ist Ihre Toleranz des Drehbuchs mit einem ernsten Gesicht, das aber naiv und manchmal ungewollt lächerlich wirkt. Len Wiseman hat sich wahrscheinlich seinen Kindheitstraum erfüllt. Er hat aber entweder die älteren Zuschauer*innen vergessen oder hat selbst noch Pickel im Gesicht. Trotzdem bekommt der Film nicht weniger als 3*. Wegen der effektvollen Darstellung. Die wilden Actionszenen, die Ausstattung und vor allem das sexy Kostüm von Kate Beckinsale – das alles ist eine Rechtfertigung der Kindlichkeit. Wenn Sie nicht zu den Fans von Federico Fellini gehören, wird das Gefallen an der visuellen und akustischen Seite des Films größer als der Ärger über seinen Inhalt sein. (20.11.2003)

We are in the 21st century, gone are the days of individualists with two fangs, now we have whole families of vampires and lycans who organize themselves almost like political parties and wage wars among themselves like mafiosi. Vampires with electronic equipment and a massive arsenal of weaponry are nothing like the pleasantly decadent vampires from, for example, Jordan's Interview with the Vampire. Sorry, Director Wiseman, I prefer the decadent ones, or the posh Count Dracula, who with all nonchalance digs his fangs into an artery and needs no laptops or liquid silver bullets to do it. For a ridiculously low budget of 20 million I was treated to some very impressive images in places, but that’s not everything, script-wise it was as scratchy as Kate's tight leather outfit while walking, the war between lycans and vampires full of machine gun shots didn't entertain me at all, nor did the plot around the blood mixing. Basically, there was nobody to root for. A lot of silly fun, really. (13.07.2004)

A film that is the biggest disappointment of the year for me personally. The fact that the touted story of Romeo and Juliet in the world of vampires and werewolves never happens wouldn't matter so much, but an action horror film with entirely unimaginative and static action and without a single thrilling moment is already a problem. On top of that, the acting is mediocre, the make-up effects are crap, the script, besides being pretty simple, has tons of logical errors and the direction is very subpar. It's a shame, because with its premise it could have been so much more. (05.12.2003)

Wie sollte man es am besten ausdrücken... Mir gefällt das Thema Vampirismus sehr gut und ich habe nichts gegen die popkulturelle Mutation von “Vampire: The Masquerade". Ich störe mich mehr an den "Bouillons aus Bouillons", die Hollywoods Chefköche aus dem Hut zaubern, und Underworld ist genau so ein Fall. Die Atmosphäre einiger Aufnahmen hat mir sehr gut gefallen, ich mochte auch den Vampir-Guru Viktor und sein Gegengewicht, den Lykaner "Pepa Vojtek" Lucius. Ansonsten sind die Charaktere motivationsschwach und - schlimmer noch - tragisch gespielt (besonders Kate, die Barbie, ist tragisch). Der größte Verlierer ist natürlich Regisseur Len Wiseman... er hätte den Film albern, aber ansprechend gestalten können, aber in seiner jetzigen Form ist er einfach nur albern. Die völlig offensichtliche und ungeschickte Kopie des visuellen Stils der Wachowski-Brüder könnte ich verzeihen, aber die völlig chaotischen und choreographierten Actionszenen, die am Ende in einem verwirrenden Schwarm von Onkeln in schwarzen Hubertusmänteln gipfeln, sind nur schwer zu verzeihen... Zu raten, wer in der Schnittkanonade wer ist, ist sinnlos und charakterisiert irgendwie den ganzen Film. Underworld fehlt es an starken Konflikten und Dramatik, einer klar umrissenen Handlung und einer meisterhaften Choreografie. Stellenweise fehlt es zwar nicht an anständiger Action, aber die bereits erwähnte Chaotik und die in einem lächerlich zeremoniellen Geist geführten Dialoge lassen ihn in einen schwachen Durchschnitt stolpern. Es ging. Jedenfalls ist Kate im Korsett und Latex hübsch anzuschauen. Der absichtlich kolorierte Schwarz-Blau-Weiß-Film ist angenehm für das Auge, aber das ist auch schon alles, was man dazu sagen kann. Es ist dramaturgisch zu einfach und kann in seinem Genre nur die berühmte Twilight-Saga nach Punkten schlagen. (31.07.2012)

Underworld is definitely not an extremely good film, but it is visually attractive, musically well-done, and sufficiently atmospheric. Kate Beckinsale fits snugly into her tight suit, and the only thing that really bothered me, and paradoxically diminished the film's cool factor, were the sometimes dull and unnecessary digital effects. A terribly naive barrage of action that perhaps suffers from the inexperience of Wiseman as a director; he obviously shot the film with great passion, never letting the viewer breathe a sigh of relief with a relentless sequence of shootouts, chases and werewolf transformations. That's certainly a good thing, but with such a bland and silly story, it didn't really come together. I felt like the film was exactly the same from start to finish and ultimately didn't bring anything groundbreaking to make me remember it for a long time. Apart from Kate Beckinsale, the best was probably the demonic Bill Nighy, whom I couldn't recognize at first thanks to the thorough work of the make-up artists. (02.06.2012)

Along with Ginger Snaps, Underworld is one of those series featuring monsters that I can't get enough of, despite my mediocre rating. The first episode has a really well done and atmospheric opening, including an introduction to the mythology of vampires and werewolves that draws the viewer into the story. I liked the hierarchy and the overall concept of the world of vampires, who, compared to werewolves (or here so nobly called Lycans), seemed more "aristocratic" – for example, covens and awakening elders. Like more than one user here, I have to comment on some of the illogical or even downright silly scenes that occurred from time to time in the film, such as the floor being shot through with a pistol (overall, Selene had a lot of rough bullets as they pierced the floor and walls at rest), the shooting sequence (a ton of bullets politely losing all the way against a few shots), or (possible SPOILER! ) the final duel between Viktor and Michael, which at times kind of reminded me of an awkwardly done game of strings and flying through the air (end of possible SPOILER!). But not to be a detractor here, I have to give credit to the decently done cliffhanger, which set the stage for the sequel, and also the decent soundtrack. It's a film that I like despite these visible flaws, which is why I like to come back to it from time to time. (03.09.2016)

Absolute Anspannung und Klasse, von klein auf zieht es mich zu Vampiren, und ich verschlinge Filme mit einer solchen Thematik. Auf Underworld hatte ich mich schon lange gefreut, und meine Erwartungen wurden komplett erfüllt, ein idealer Film für ein Multiplexkino. Übervolle Musik, Kate im Anzug, die heldenhaft allen Feinden trotz, stylische Actionszenen und vor allem meine geliebten Vampire! Und dieser ewige Krieg zwischen Lykanern und Vampiren lässt sich recht gut auf die heutige Welt übertragen, ein Hauch von Zeitlosigkeit ist dort also spürbar. Ich verstehe aber, dass Underworld nicht allen gefallen muss. (14.04.2007)

Underworld is a standard vampires vs. werewolves movie, the only difference being that it's actually fun. It’s quite an easy watch, so I just switched off a part of my brain and let myself be entertained by all the various characters, the best of whom was definitely Viktor. (17.04.2017)

I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, but in concept and treatment, Underworld certainly doesn't fall into the category of a purely "B" film: The sets, the art direction, the music, and the excellent action are the main pluses of this film, which otherwise flounders on its script. Underworld is far from being a sophisticated and intelligent vampire saga, but I was not bored, quite the opposite – I had a great time. A weaker 4 stars. (26.07.2009)
