The Purge: Anarchy

Wesentlich besser als der erste Teil, ich habe über einen vierten Stern nachgedacht. Der Film ist spannender, er hat eine sensiblere Beziehung zu den Figuren, das Drehbuch ist schlauer und am Ende wurde es mehr entwickelt. Das Werk ist auch als provokative Kritik des US-amerikanischen Kapitalismus treffender. Ein düsterer, harter Film, dessen Stoff unangenehm realistisch ist und der mit einem Thriller-Tempo mit vielen Schießereien unterhält. Er erinnert ein bisschen an ein Videospiel, in dem man nur dann in Sicherheit kommt, wenn man sich durch eine volle und verdammt gefährliche Stadt in der Nacht durchkämpft. (07.08.2014)

The more space the characters have to move around, the more space they have to behave like morons. If anything, I have to acknowledge that the second Purge at least tries not to copy the first episode and makes better use of its initial premise, though its hollowness hasn’t changed at all since the previous one, but whatever. What bothered me the most were the characters, in particular the mother with her daughter, who were very annoying. In contrast, Frank Grillo was fine and I wouldn’t mind if he was the only protagonist, and the entire second Purge was only about his journey across the chaotic city towards his rightful revenge. Another thing that bothered me were the moments where the creators probably think they are delivering a sharp social satire (the scene of the auction, in particular, is utter nonsense), but they actually don’t say anything at all about society, because their world stands on a very wobbly logic. But overall, I have nothing against this film, it’s an inoffensive and eager B-movie. (09.08.2014)

Überraschenderweise besser als der erste Teil. Es schadet überhaupt nicht, dass wir uns von einem Horror-Thriller zu einem vollwertigen Action-Thriller bewegt haben. Damit geht automatisch mehr Action, Schießereien und brennende Busse einher. Denn die Regeln der Säuberung sind bereits festgelegt, der Film wird uns sehr bald in eine Nacht voller Gewalt, Leiden und Mord ziehen. In den Straßen der Großstadt, wo ein Krieg zwischen den Armen und Reichen für 12 Stunden ausgebrochen ist, versucht eine Gruppe Überlebender zu überleben. Die herausragendste Besetzung ist Grillo, die anderen sind austauschbar. Es geht zwar nicht viel um Blut, aber der Klang eines Maschinengewehrs aus dem LKW-Anhänger lässt die Ohren klingeln und das Tempo lässt den Zuschauern keine Zeit zum Durchatmen. Also ein unkomplizierter Spaß im Stil von "viel Musik für wenig Geld". (70%) (30.07.2014)

In my opinion, weaker than the more intimate first movie. While it has likeable characters and a great intro that manages to evoke an atmosphere of hopelessness and the fear of ordinary people in the face of an impending storm exactly as I would have wanted throughout the rest of the film, as the minutes tick by, DeMonaco turns the story into a B-grade action video game where the heroes run around the city and seemingly complete new missions at random. The "climax" in this respect is the dark and opaque shootout at the very end, which pretty much says it all. The only thing I enjoyed is the idea of rich men using The Purge to capture random people and then hunt them down in an enclosed arena, purely for fun and, of course, for money. 50% (28.07.2015)

Besser, spannender, interessanter, actiongeladener als Teil eins. Schon die einleitenden zwanzig Minuten versprechen einen besseren Film. Die Atmosphäre der Angst, des steigenden Adrenalinspiegels und der nervösen schrecklichen Erwartung wurde recht glaubwürdig gezeichnet. Frank Grillo ist in der Titelrolle sehr sicher und hat sofort meine Sympathien gewonnen. Die Truppe vom Lieferwagen wirkte ausreichend schrecklich und faszinierend. Möglicherweise würde zu einer größeren Effektivität betragen, wenn man den Film auf neunzig Minuten kürzen würde. Insgesamt gebe ich so dreieinhalb Sternchen, doch wenn ich dem langweiligen Teil eins drei gegeben habe, dann runde ich bei Teil zwei nach oben auf. Ich freue mich auf eine eventuelle Nummer drei. "Purge: Anarchy" is definitely not such a great step towards realizing its potential. DeMonaco goes with his action spectacle, which surprisingly isn't as intense or cruel. In this regard, the film has lost a bit of its impact and there are no scenes that truly captivate me. It's a shame because I'm sure that in such a setting and with such a premise, it could have been possible. The ending is a classic resolution that simply doesn't exceed the limits. (08.10.2014)
