Top of the Lake

Eine intuitive Gender-Detektivgeschichte, die wir als ein gigantisches Filmprojekt betrachten sollten. Die Aufteilung in Folgen wirkt sehr künstlich und reißt aufgrund der Struktur, die in der Tat eher von Emotionen als von raffinierten Erzählplan bestimmt wird, unterbricht eigentlich nur unnötig unser Nachdenken. Ich habe hier keine Scheu, das als bodenständigen magischen Realismus zu bezeichnen, eine Picknick am Valentinstag des 21. Jahrhunderts. Das mitreißende Charisma gestörter Figuren (Patriarch Matt, der graue Mutti-Guru GJ), eine sehr persönliche Reflexion von Weiblichkeit, Männlichkeit, Empfängnis, Tod ... das einzige, was hier versagt, ist die vorhersehbare und wortwörtliche Pointe. Aber die Top of the Lake-Kraft besteht hier ja darin, was danach kommt. In einer Szene, in der wir die faszinierende neuseeländische Landschaft sehen, verwoben mit Ruhe, Wind und ein paar losen Worten. Es ist eine unvergessliche, grausame und uns immer mehr hineinsaugende Welt, die einmal mehr zeigt, wie weit die Möglichkeiten heutiger TV-Serien reichen. [90%] (05.05.2014)

A female True Detective. Or isn’t True Detective a male version of Top of the Lake? It’s not just that it has the same cameraman and therefore has the same film-like and really darkly gritting appearance (the presentation of the beauties of New Zealand do not remind one of Lord of the Rings; apart from the fact that it’s all rain and fog and if you get lost you can toss a coin to find out if you’ll die of hunger or exposure). In both it applies that the case itself is of secondary importance (and here this applies a little more, since “who and how" becomes clear in the middle of the first episode). Both play more with symbolism, reading between the lines and the omni-present subliminal tension. In both it applies that when, on occasion, it lowers itself to be literal, it immediately loses a lot of its magic. Both have ambiguous characters, excellently written and played. Both play on a disconcerting string. Both are primarily about the characters, about life and all that... and both are perfect. (17.03.2014)

Jane Campion ist eine neuseeländische Starregisseurin, und alle sind neugierig darauf, wie sie ihre TV-Krimis inszenieren wird. Aber wie enttäuschend ist es, dass Top of the Lake keine Spur von der Bildsprache ihrer großen Werke wie Ein Engel an meiner Tafel, Das Piano, Portrait of a Lady oder Bright Star - Meine Liebe. Ewig. hat. Aber es passt trotzdem so gut zu dieser außergewöhnlichen neuseeländischen Landschaft... Und es geht nicht mehr nur um Herr der Ringe, Seeker oder Xena. (29.01.2019)
