With an intergalactic cast of thousands, Koji Masunari's colorfully explosive debut feature sets a new high for visual spectacle and sheer inventiveness of character design – in what has to be one of the most gleefully surreal depictions of alien life forms ever portrayed in cinema.
It seems like just another lazy summer is in store for Amane and her older cousin Natsuki. Lolling about the Japanese countryside, the days are blithe and boundless. But boredom quickly vanishes when they find an injured dog in the woods and bring him back to the cabin – only to discover that he is not a dog at all, but Pochi, an alien botanist sent to Earth to track down a rare and powerful plant called Zughaan (better known to Earthlings as wasabi root). Before long, Pochi has whisked the kids away to a space colony on the dark side of the moon, an interstellar melting pot where we experience a non-stop parade of humorous alien creatures, jellyfish spaceships, dragon trains, and – if that weren't enough – a theme song from UK pop anomaly Susan Boyle. (Really? Yes, really.) The plot twists come fast and furious, and with such a glorious barrage of color and invention washing across the screen, you just want to hit pause and gawk at the wonder of what you are seeing.

Was als eine gewöhnliche Familienshow über eine Gruppe von fünf normalen Kindern begann, die sich entschieden haben, gemeinsam so etwas wie im Sommerferienlager zu verbringen, wird zu einem absolut magischen, bunten und interessanten Roadtrip durch fast das gesamte Universum und endet in einem sehr (sogar übertriebenen ) Aktion und emotionales Finale. Nun, ich hatte auch eine ziemlich gute Zeit. Der Anfang war zivil, ebenso wie die Darbietungen der Charaktere, die ein ganz normaler Haufen Kinder aus einem Dorf sind. Pocchi kommt plötzlich dazu - ein außerirdischer Hund, der auch ein guter Freund ist, dann kommen auch andere interessante Weltraumkreaturen dazu, von denen mir Pink Ink am besten gefallen hat. Die Charaktere sind hier sehr gut gezeichnet und man arbeitet mit ihnen während des gesamten Films ziemlich gut, wo jeder genug Raum für bekommt, um zu dem Zuschauer eine Beziehung aufzubauen. Der größte Vorteil dieses Films ist für mich jedoch die Fantasie und Farbe, mit der das Universum hier aufgebaut ist. Fast alles hat hier seinen Reiz, für manche Ideen bleibt fast schon der gesunde Menschenverstand stehen, aber es hat immer noch die Atmosphäre des Abenteuers und die Lust, Neues und Faszinierendes zu entdecken. Ich erinnerte mich sogar an den Film Valerian - Die Stadt der tausend Planeten, der mir auch visuell gefallen hat, aber dieses Werk hatte eine tiefere Geschichte als Valerian, sympathischere Charaktere und viel besser bearbeitete Emotionen. Ich mochte die Animation und die Musik. Grundsätzlich habe ich keine großen Kritikpunkte, vielleicht finde ich noch ein paar kleine, aber warum diesen sehr ordentlichen Eindruck verderben... 7,5/10
