Lau, ein aufstrebender junger Cop, der an vorderster Front bei der Bekämpfung illegaler Banden eingesetzt wird, hat die besten Karten bei seinen Vorgesetzten. Und er ist an den internen Ermittlungen der Dienstaufsicht betreff Kriminalität in den eigenen Reihen beteiligt. Yan ist ein abgebrühter Ganove, mit Sinn für ausgefallene Tricks. Er genießt mehr Vertrauen beim großen Boss als jeder andere Killer oder Handlanger und soll jetzt endlich den Polizeispitzel zur Strecke bringen, der die Bande unterwandert hat und jede kriminelle Handlung im Kern sabotiert. Die Realität sieht jedoch ganz anders aus - Lau ist der Gangster und Yan in Wirklichkeit ein Undercover-Cop. Ein hochwertiges Krimi-Drama mit einem Standardthema, aber einem unerwarteten Ende. Das Woo-Motiv eines Duells von zwei Männern, die sich auf entgegengesetzten Seiten des Gesetzes befinden, hoch zwei. Zwar ohne die tolle Woo-Action, aber mit gründlich durchgearbeiteten Figuren und einer dynamischen visuellen Seite auch in ruhigen Szenen. Dieser Film ist ein repräsentatives Werk seiner Art, das eine gedankliche Dimension hat, welche dem Publikum kein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubern wird.

Internal Affairs offers everything that every five-star film should have. A gripping story, well-written and well acted characters, good music and great direction. It would be a mistake not to it.

Ein wirklich exzellenter Thriller, der mich angenehm überrascht hat, indem er die Action vernachlässigt und auf eine perfekte Regie setzt, die bis auf wenige Ausnahmen auf Brutalität und wilde Schießereien verzichtet und nur mit Andeutungen und "eigenständigem" Reiben der Erzählstränge an einem scheinbar zusammenhanglosen Strom von Schnitten und Raum-Zeit-Sprüngen arbeitet. Der Expositionsteil ist vielleicht etwas zu "verstreut" und es dauert lange, bis sich der Zuschauer in dem Gewirr von Rückblenden und Details zurechtfindet, aber die perfekt ausbalancierte Geschichte der beiden Doppelagenten (jeder auf einer anderen Seite der Barrikade) nimmt wunderbar Fahrt auf. Das zentrale Duo lässt sich wohl am besten durch das Umfeld beschreiben, in dem sie leben - Inspektor Lau in einem gut eingerichteten Haus mit einer hübschen Freundin, Yan der Reiher ewig auf der Flucht, der er nur auf Hausdächern und im Stuhl seines Psychologen entkommt. Die perfekte Atmosphäre wird durch eine sehr spezielle und moderne Kameraführung, hervorragende schauspielerische Leistungen und musikalische Untermalung geschaffen. Infernal Affairs - Die achte Hölle ist kein geradliniger Thriller, er spielt mit subtilen Andeutungen, zielt nicht auf ein lineares Ende, sondern hinterfragt Gut und Böse und schafft es sogar, mit einer guten Wendung zu überraschen. Obwohl es kein Gedankenkoloss oder ein Labyrinth ist, funktioniert es wie ein Uhrwerk und schafft es, mit seinem seltsamen bürgerlichen Ton zu fesseln.

I dare to comment on this remarkable gem only after watching the entire trilogy, and it won't be a surprise when I say that the first part is also the best. In front of the viewer, a cruel game takes place in the genre of a police thriller, so gripping that at times one can hardly breathe. When everything is additionally performed by an amazing quartet of actors (Yan and Commander Wong on the side of the positive heroes, and Ming with boss Sam on the evil side), no one can blame me for not being able to hold back tears during intense moments, and for sitting with my jaw dropped for a long time after the absolute end.

A little bit The Departed... by which I just mean this much: it's really a shame that I saw that movie before the "original". I guess even the ratings would have turned out differently. Perhaps. I really liked it and I'm glad I finally sat down to watch it. If I had been standing... :-) Definitely for those who like crime and aren't afraid of a familiar story. In short, a complete acting concert by the famous "four" (Andy, Tony, Anthony, Eric).

The scales we apply when evaluating a film are different for each individual, so we cannot blame anyone for being enthusiastic about something that others do not like. However, if the Hong Kong movie Internal Affairs narrowly surpasses Martin Scorsese's The Departed, it is not evidence of great cinephilic erudition among users of FilmBooster. Internal Affairs is definitely not a bad film. It is a professionally directed gangster flick with very decent performances and if I hadn't seen Scorsese's remake beforehand, I would seriously consider giving it four stars. However, The Departed overwhelmingly surpasses Internal Affairs in every aspect, as it is more elaborately developed with well-drawn characters and logically functions much better in its plot. Internal Affairs is significantly more popcorn-like, with more dynamic editing, and moves towards its goal at a much faster pace. It doesn't burden itself with the psychology of the characters and is only interested in providing a fair amount of entertainment. Especially with its pathetic ending, Internal Affairs perfectly aligns with the expectations of the audience in line with the studio system, where the American version is dirtier and rawer. Where the villain Ming promises redemption to his girl and desires to do good, his American counterpart would reluctantly, but without hesitation, kill his love... Overall impression: 65%.

Ein unifiziertes Krimidrama nach den gängigen Mustern, inklusive einer fröhlichen Freundin im bürgerlichen Leben, Zivilleben, einem Lockvogel und der klassischen Rollenverteilung in gute und böse Manipulatoren. Erfrischend ist also nur Hongkong.

There’s hardly any action, which I consider a fatal flaw in an action movie. And it’s not even saved by the interestingly constructed, though in essence banal, plot. The characters are well portrayed and you’ll whether you like Eastern mysticism and gimmicks or not, but that is the only positive aspect I found, the rest is boredom and mediocrity. Very average movie, I don't understand the high ratings, but that's normal here.

Scorsese's version impressed me. After all, it is a powerful film with a great plot and it is exceptionally well-directed. The original "Infernal Affairs" is a bit less certain in direction, but that's simply because Scorsese is a genius in this aspect. However, Hong Kong creators are definitely not far behind, on the contrary, it astoundingly surprised me how confident this film is, and it's a bit surprising to me that it didn't at least earn a nomination for the foreign Oscar. The music is absolutely excellent, the story is original, and most importantly, it has a good pace. Some shots even surprised me. If I gave Scorsese's version 100%, I can't go much lower here. Visually stunning film, it's just the story... it's simply good.
