Western

In der Geschichte-Un-Geschichte über den Versuch einer Gruppe deutscher Arbeiter, Beziehungen zu den bulgarischen Bewohnern des Dorfes aufzubauen, in dessen Nähe sie arbeiten, finden sich viele Ideen und Themen. Die Handlung fehlt jedoch und es handelt sich eher um eine Abfolge von Szenen, in denen die Menschen in der Lage sind, einander auch ohne Kenntnis der Sprache zu verstehen oder sich in die Haare zu geraten. Die langsam fließende Charakterstudie vieler Figuren im Hintergrund der bulgarischen Landschaft ist intelligent inszeniert und geschickt besetzt mit natürlichen Laiendarstellern, aber gleichzeitig völlig unbewegend, undramatisch, nicht einnehmend und erzählt nichts Konkretes, was in Ihrer Erinnerung haften bleiben könnte. Eine perfekt getroffene Charakterstudie und ein ironisches Spiel mit dem Genre. Ein Film über die Unfähigkeit, die Einsamkeit zu akzeptieren, und den ewigen Wunsch, irgendwohin zu gehören, selbst wenn man sich dafür verleugnen muss. Schöne Poesie des Verstehens ohne Worte. (27.05.2017)

Ein angenehmer Film über einfache Menschen und den Zusammenstoß ihrer Kulturen. In zweisprachigen, deutsch-bulgarischen Dialogen verstehen sie zwar jedes zehnte Wort, dennoch nimmt einen der Film völlig gefangen. Wegen der Natürlichkeit, der Menschlichkeit und Gefühlen, die wir alle gut kennen, für die aber im Film meistens kein Platz ist. Aus Nicht-Schauspielern kann man oft viel rausholen, wenn man eine klare Regie-Absicht und eine hohe emotionale Intelligenz hat. Der Arbeiter in der Hauptrolle ist die charismatischste Figur, die ich dieses Jahr auf dem Festival in Karlsbad gesehen habe. (06.07.2017)

Western is incredibly ordinary, which ironically makes it feel fresh and original. The filmmakers playfully explore the stereotypes of Germans and Bulgarians, showing that when it comes down to it, you don’t need a common language to connect with people. The film has a strong human element, wrapped in a kind of quiet poetry. And honestly, those shots of German workers lounging in a Bulgarian river won’t bother you at all. Not much happens plot-wise, but I was completely mesmerized. Then again, maybe that had something to do with the sweltering heat in my room while I watched these German builders chilling in the river, sipping on Bulgarian beer. (30.06.2021)

Nice work with plot motifs, narrative formulas and the iconography of the western, whose romanticism clashes with the unsentimentally depicted social reality of contemporary Europe, where borders that had been erased are being redrawn. Instead of cowboys conquering Indian country, a group of German workers colonise a Bulgarian village (flying the flag, saddling up on someone else’s horse, getting close to a local woman). The theme comprising the clash of two cultures is crucial, except it is more of a clash between East and West than between civilisation and wilderness. The members of the two sub-worlds between which the protagonist moves actually understand each other less than they outwardly appear to. An ambiguous loner for whom freedom is evidently more important than family. Despite that, however, he clearly wants to belong somewhere, to be accepted by others (but it’s hard to say what exactly he desires, as concealing his emotions is part of his nature). For my taste, however, there were too many mood-evoking shots of the wandering protagonist holding a cigarette, the frequency of which probably has something to do with the looser structure of the story, which gives the impression of having been created “on the fly”. In terms of style and narrative structure, the film reminded me quite a lot of a long line of other festival dramas (the veristic shooting style, the final violent clash followed by catharsis), and the theme of western companies (and the possessive mentality) expanding into the “developing” countries of Eastern Europe was more aptly addressed in Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann. 75% (02.11.2017)
