A Ghost Story

Ein sehr schönes Motiv der Treue, der Ausdauer und Einsamkeit der Geister, die auf eine geliebte Person und das Zuhause fixiert sind. Das Potenzial einer interessanten philosophischen Meditation wird schließlich zu einem "Festivalnonsens“, dessen Sinn auch seine Autoren nicht erklären können. Der Film beginnt als eine zarte Romanze. Durch Andeutungen von einem mysteriösen Spiritismus wird daraus eine existenzielle Levitation mit einer unsinnig kombinierten Handlung und einem unbefriedigenden Ende. Lange Aufnahmen (meistens statisch), das Format 4:3 mit einer minimalistischen Ausstattung, ein Minimum an Worten und eine ausgezeichnete Stimmung. (02.07.2017)

Yeah, it’s high art and whatnot, but to be clear, I’m going to give a list of things that I find a lot more entertaining and fulfilling than watching A Ghost Story: a deep cleaning of my living-room and kitchen, a voluntary visit to the dentist, clipping my grandma’s toenails, looking for Atlantis at the bottom of Devil’s Lake, half year studying for my final examination in mathematics, a marathon of Jaromír Soukup shows, running a marathon in freezing temperatures, washing dishes with cold water, going to a restaurant that didn’t get even one star from Zdeňek Pohlreich, going to a party as designated driver, working in a call centre, fishing in a dried-up lake, mushroom hunting in a housing estate, trying to convince prime minister Babiš to stop stealing. Casey Affleck stirbt am Anfang des Films und der Rest der Geschichte (abgesehen von ein paar Rückblenden) verbringt er unter der Bettdecke und spielt den Geist. Die erste Hälfte ist brutal langweilig (geprägt von langen statischen Aufnahmen, in denen nicht viel passiert, mit einer vierminütigen Sequenz, in der Rooney Mara Kuchen isst und dabei schluchzt) und die zweite Hälfte ist wiederum sehr verwirrend und seltsam, weil darin viel wild in der Zeit gesprungen wird. Wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe, nur dank einer anderen Figur im Film, die es mir vorher erklärt hat, und selbst dann weiß man nicht so genau. Im gesamten Film gibt es etwa ein halbes Dutzend brillanter Ideen, von denen jedoch jeder nur am Rand genutzt und anschließend vom Tisch gefegt wird. Es ist schade, denn dem Film fehlt definitiv nicht die starke Atmosphäre und als Festival-Bizarrerie funktioniert er auch, aber aus filmischer Sicht zerfällt und der Geist vergeblich und Sinn sucht man darin vergebens. I had no idea what I was in for when I started watching the film. I was all the more curious. Well, it didn't last long. Once again, it turned out that I’m not enough of an intellectual to appreciate the hidden qualities of this film. The beginning was unbelievably slow. The filmmakers embellished it with absolutely breathtaking static shots without even a trace of movement, and I started to have a bad feeling about it. After such an opening, the film continued at the same frantic pace, and the FFW button became my faithful companion, thanks to which I managed to bring the running time down to a tolerable sixty minutes. "Přízrak" is definitely not a movie that will appeal to everyone. Its pace is truly so slow that at times you will just stare, wondering if the picture has frozen. The scene with the cake is the best example of this. But despite being almost wordless, the film manages to convey something to you and leave an impression on you. (25.09.2017)

I was just waiting for the dude to build, like, a barn or a chemical plant and finally get some serious voyeurism going. An extraordinarily bad film (not in the sense of having a bad effect on the viewer, because it doesn't have any effect) that is neither arthouse, nor alternative, nor original, nor festival, nor bizarre. It's just bad and boring. The only moment I identified with a character was the Rooney Mara eating seance she puked after. That amount of pie and depression would probably get anyone.
