10 year old Harvie is a smart but a bit too lively boy with one ambition, to finish the last impossible level of his computer game. Once in the Gamers Hall of Fame, the bullies at school will have to respect him and even his absentminded father, Mr. Spejbl, would finally be proud of him. But finishing the virtual game turns out to be only the beginning of a very real adventure that takes Harvie, his dog Jerry and the reluctant neighbour girl Monica deep into the forgotten realms of the city´s old puppet museum. And as Harvie by accident activates a legendary magic disc, he brings not only the museum and all its awesome puppets to life, but also it´s ancient and monstrous puppet master! Realising what powers he has unleashed, Harvie will have to challenge his gaming skills to new levels and summon all his courage to fight the crazy puppet master and save not only his father but the entire city from a grim and wooden faith! Zur Erinnerung: Hurvínek gab sein Filmdebüt in einem Stummfilm-Werbespot für Spejblův případ (1930). Seine weitere Reise über die Leinwand ist gesäumt von Lehr-, Zeichentrick-, Puppen-, Schwarz-Weiß-, Farb- und 3D-Filmen. Hurvínek war der Held von Verfilmungen von Theaterstücken für Groß und Klein, er wurde auch in seiner eigenen Gutenachtgeschichte berühmt, und wir könnten noch lange so weitermachen. Kann man sich also wundern und Hurvínek für 2017 nicht die Daumen drücken? Abgesehen davon, dass er sehr lustig und urkomisch ist? Wohl kaum. Nur dort, wo man sich wundert, dass die Puppe als 3D-Transposition Augenlider, ist es traurig, denn Hurvínek hatte schon 1936 Augenlider, ha-ha.

Die Animation ist überraschend gut und die stilisierte Darstellung der Charaktere ist ausgezeichnet, so dass die Animatoren und Künstler definitiv Lob verdienen, genauso wie Jiří Škorpík für die großartige fröhliche Musikbegleitung. Regie und Drehbuch hingegen versagen auf ganzer Linie - die Handlung des Films ist nämlich verzweifelt inkohärent, flüchtig und an manchen Stellen sogar dadaistisch. Der Großteil des Films besteht mehr oder weniger nur aus verschiedenen dramaturgischen und erzählerischen Fehlern (wie zum Beispiel Mánička und Frau Kateřina, die völlig überflüssige Charaktere sind, weil sie während des ganzen Films nichts Wesentliches tun oder sagen, um ihre Existenz in der Geschichte zu rechtfertigen) und überraschenderweise fehlen jegliche verbalen Witze oder Wortspiele, mit denen Hurvínek berühmt wurde. This puppet classic is killed a bit by the 3D animation, but it has to be admitted that it celebrates puppets anyway. The story is a bit silly and overly positive towards the end, but it works and the blend of modern and classic is quite good. And yes, the characters have the potential for contemporary audiences, children and adults alike.
