Bad Taste

A non-stop parade of highly entertaining nastiness. Aliens shot to bits, a tasty lunch of vomit, and a snack of human brains eaten with a spoon as the icing on the cake. “I'm a Derek and Dereks don't run!” Peter Jackson kept his word, didn't give up his struggle as a filmmaker and made more great and extremely entertaining films like Bad Taste. I really don’t know what went wrong. Braindead is one of my favourite films and I consider it a cult movie, but Bad Taste completely missed me. It was so annoying that at some point I thought of turning it off and the only thing that prevented that was waiting for whatever it was that had made others give it five stars. And there wasn’t anything! It’s just awfully boring, with atrocious performances and cringe-worthy dialogues and scenes, and it’s not even the least funny. Braindead made me laugh at least twice a minute, this one had nothing that cheered me up. I just want to quickly forget it, it was crap. I’m glad I watched Braindead first, otherwise, after this one, I wouldn’t have had the courage. One star is too generous perhaps. (02.09.2008)

A maximum splatter coating that is a perfect demonstration of Jackson's directorial craziness. A monstrous collection of disgusting things of all kinds, dominated by various forms of human body dismemberment, but on the other hand also by an unceasing cadence of the darkest humor. Certainly, the plot is simple and short, fitting neatly into a single page, and the whole thing is shot exactly in the style of a "buddy" video. However, only a few videos of this kind convey such enthusiasm with every shot (that detailed camera pan around Magnum is fantastic) while maintaining a sense of humor about the fact that nothing deadly serious is being filmed here. Within serious filmmaking, it's undoubtedly an obvious outsider, but as a cult classic for die-hard film fans, it's a flawless masterpiece that will leave you questioning yourself for another two hours after it ends, wondering how it's possible to create something so brilliant with such a small budget. Peter Jackson hat einen verruchten Sinn für Humor und ein noch verruchteres Talent. Obwohl dieser Film von vorne bis hinten amateurhaft ist, ist er viel besser gemacht als die meisten "offiziellen" Splatterproduktionen. Alle verwendeten Requisiten und Effekte sind durchschaubar bis hin zum Horror, aber genau darum geht es in Bad Taste. Eine Ode an den schlechten Geschmack, ein schreckliches Drehbuch, Hirn, Möwen, Gedärme und die mobilen BEATLES schwelgen in der Unfähigkeit und der B-Klasse, sie schwelgen darin und nutzen all das Gute, das sie zu bieten haben... Spaß, schwarzer Humor, übertriebene Perversion, mörderisch geschmacklose Musik, Herumalbern statt Schauspielerei (P. J. selbst hat seine Rolle sehr genossen, man sieht es an seinen schielenden Augen), glasklare Action. Es hat denen Spaß gemacht, die es gemacht haben, und es macht auch denen Spaß, die es sich ansehen. Eine einfache Gleichung. Wenn Sie also bei den Worten Splatter und Gore nicht automatisch die Koffer packen, dann willkommen in Jacksons Delikatessenladen. Ich hätte gern zweihundert Gramm Milz, ein Meter Eingeweide und das abgehangene Gehirn da, fein geschnitten mit einer Kettensäge. (27.10.2004)

Das Gebet aller Low-Budget-Splatterfilme. Viel Blut, Eingeweide, Blut, Ausserirdische und noch mehr Blut. Und obwohl alle Gewalt, Charaktere und der morbide Humor noch nicht in einem so natürlichen Gleichgewicht sind wie bei Peter Jacksons späterem Film Braindead, ist es immer noch ein qualitativ hochwertiger Spaß. Jackson überhäuft Sie hier mit so viel Gore auf absurdem Level, dass dieser Film auch heute immer noch schwer Konkurrenz findet. Szenen wie das Schießen mit einem Maschinengewehr in Gedärmen, das Essen von Gehirnen mit einem Löffel oder das gemeinschaftliche Trinken von Erbrochenem bleiben einem leicht im Gedächtnis. Wiederholte Vorführungen sind daher fast ein Muss. Der Satz "Ich wurde gerade zum zweiten Mal geboren!", den der Held murmelt, während er mit einer Kettensäge den Körper eines kannibalischen Außerirdischen durchtrennt, passt hier also. (01.07.2013)

Peter Jackson is probably not a normal person, but you can't be mad at him. This movie is stupid, disgusting, and freaky, but it's damn good entertainment that even Paul Verhoeven on a $100,000,000 budget wouldn't dare to make. It's not exactly customary for almost all humour to come from detailed limb-ripping, but Jackson has an innate sense of the right level of "stab and cut", and instead of being disgusted, you have to laugh out loud. In addition, the aliens are really cruel (where is Independence Day?) and thanks to the legendary Derek and his motorbike you will get to know their organs in detail. It may look terribly amateurish, and the cinematography, sound and editing are crap, but Jackson showed great courage when he presented the audience not with a couple in love in the middle of the beautiful New Zealand countryside, but with a bunch of slimy alien cannibals who will flip you off and take you away in a flying house. Compared to it, the high-budget Lord of the Rings must have been a walk in the park. (26.02.2012)

You can't be serious. Everyone else with a camera has done something similar with their mates and I believe it was funnier. Peter Jackson as Derek should be shot. Apart from a few good jokes (seagulls for example), it’s pretty dull and only occasionally impresses with decent enough cinematography for a debut. (30.11.2009)

Extremely funny, stylish, disgustingly gross, and filmed with great love (thank goodness it was eventually finished.) A brutal performance that will leave you feeling at the end that it was either filmed by a genius or a total pervert. Which are not necessarily mutually exclusive:)))) I really had a royal good time for an hour and a half, like I did with Dead Alive, so it deserves full marks.) I've yet to see Meet the Feebles, so I'm curious to see if it’s outdone by Bad Taste or by Dead Alive.) (28.09.2010)
