Erlöse uns von dem Bösen

Elemente von Geisterhorrorfilmen in einem erstklassigen Thriller-Schema à la Sieben – ein knallharter Bulle mit einer Taschenlampe geht durch die verregnete Dunkelheit. Das Drehbuch ist nicht gerade bahnbrechend, aber die Verarbeitung ist handwerklich perfekt. Derrickson ist geschickt. Die Hauptfigur ist kein einfacher, guter Kerl, er kämpft innerlich mit einer Leiche im Keller. Der untypische Geistliche wird sein wichtiger Begleiter. Ein schnelles Tempo, ein höllisches Make-up vom Hauptschuft (man muss auch seinen Darsteller Sean Harris loben) und eine gewaltige Musik von Christopher Young mit vielen Instrumenten. Ein allmählicher Start eskaliert bis zu einem intensiven Horrorerlebnis. Die thematische Verbindung mit der Musik von The Doors ist seltsam, aber sie verleiht dem Film einen gewissen coolen und originellen Charakter. Die Rache vernichtet immer ihren Vollzieher. As the lightning struck a lone tree by the roadside, I began to suspect where the director's path would lead. This is because Derrickson's undoubted talent was given a financial infusion and bigger-name actors, but in doing so, he signed up for the Bruckheimerian devil that relies on clichés and plot banalities in the plot. In fact, it’s not really pulled off even by the few skillfully-conceived scary scenes and instead makes you lament how dysfunctional the chemistry between the characters is. This makes it subjectively about half an hour longer, and slightly more excruciating in the end than the filmmakers intended. (07.11.2014)

If it weren’t for the authors pushing the horror elements, I’d even rate it with all five stars. But not only were the occasional jump-scares cheesy, they were also pointless. They were just there to try and create a distinguished atmosphere that the movie already had without them. And that was mostly due to the great combination of story and atmosphere which was definitely inspired by the legendary movie Seven. But after I watched the movie, I was shocked by the fact that it was – once again – based on true events. I can’t help but think that I haven’t seen a familiar story in the news or heard someone speak about a similar experience. It’s always introduced by these sorts of horrors that try to assure us that all that exorcism is based on true events. Isn’t the actual truth going to be a little different? Or maybe it’s a ploy to support the Church? And Eric Bana was great in this, but the authors could have done without the final scene. (15.07.2014)

Dämonen sind miserable Raummaler, und Eulen sind nicht das, was sie zu sein scheinen. Eine unsinnig geschwollene Mischung aus Polizeiprozeduren, einem dunklen Fincher-Thriller über die Krise der (post-)postmodernen Gesellschaft sowie all die exorzistischen Horrorfilme, die Sie gesehen haben. Anstelle der frostigen Verarbeitung einer wahren Begebenheit erscheint Satchies angeblich realer Fall verwirrte Aufzeichnungen von Zuschauern zu sein, die viel zu viele Genrefilme gesehen haben. Derricksons Stil ist im Vergleich zu Sinisters Raffinesse und Genauigkeit sehr schwerfällig, zumal mit Gradierung lediglich sehr wenig Arbeit geleistet wird. Sofern bereits nach ein paar Minuten Kerle mit sich lockerem Make-up oder kreischende Devil-Whores sich auf der Leinwand entlang bewegen, so bewegt sich der der Film exakt an der unangenehmen Grenze zwischen Erschrecken und Spott. Meiner Ansicht nach ist er zwar nie in vollem Umfang auf der falschen Seite zum Erliegen gekommen, jedoch sicherlich auch nicht auf der guten. Eine übermäßige Anzahl aggressiver und wenig einfallscreicher Erschreckungsszenen, zu welchen sich diesmal die überwiegend unwirksam verknüpften diversen Aufnahmearten gesinnen, ein wenig traditionellen luxuriösen Klanterrors, welcher für das Geschichtenerzählen von Wichtigkeit ist, exzellent besetzte Hauptrollen mitsamt eines Beweises, dass the Doors etwas Böses darstellen, das gerade noch für sumerische Dämonen gut genug ist. Ich hatte eine (un)angenehme Sommerspritztour durch ein Spukschloss im Stil des exzellenten Conjuring - Die Heimsuchungs Einteilers erwartet, doch erhalten habe ich eine verwirrte Broschüre mit vielen Filmen, die mittels didaktischer Diskussionen über Gut, Böse und Sühne für die Schuld zusammengehalten wurden. Ohne den bereits traditionell leistungsstarken Bana und insbesondere Ramírez, die vom Vatikan schleunigts als flotter Jesuit engagiert werden sollte, entstünde daraus ein Chaos. Somit haben wir hier etwas leicht Überdurchschnittliches, und zugleich ein anschauliches Beispiel, dass Derrickson auch dort nichts so richtig gelingt, wo man ihn als sicher beheimatet ansedelte. Aus dem dreiblättrigen Kleeblatt seiner Horrorfilme ist Erlöse uns von dem Bösen der schwächste. (03.07.2014)

One day, Catholic cop Sarchie got blind drunk and had a fit at the jukebox playing The Doors. And now there’s a humorous police crime buddy exorcist horror “inspired by true events" where, thanks to the width of the genre, you don’t get clichés you’ve seen a hundred times over from just one or two, but from three genres at once. So situations arise where separate clichés meet in clashing combinations and create something completely new, often bizarre or downright ridiculous, but always (however unintentionally) entertaining. If only it could decide what it wants to be, if it were shorter, if only it didn’t run off naively into ridiculous situations (welcome to the tomb with the twisting Morrison or the furry owl) if only the frights weren’t so cheap and pre-warned, if only Ramírez had at least a pinch of charisma, if only McHale weren’t Jeff from Community, if only this, if only that, this could have been good, very good. Unfortunately, there are too many “if only"s for one picture. (03.07.2014)

Die Verknüpfung von Kriminalthrillern aus den Neunzigerjahren und dem exorzistischen Horror von Derrickson scheint nicht so gut funktioniert zu haben, wie er es sich vorgestellt hatte. Es gibt minimal beängstigende Momente und mit fortschreitender Laufzeit wird es immer mehr geschwätzig. Es ist schade, wenn ich mich an die beiden Szenen im Kinderzimmer erinnere, bei denen es angenehm gruselig wird. Die Arbeit mit Ton und Kamera ist ein Genuss und ihr Teamspiel kann man in der ersten halben Stunde richtig genießen, was für das Publikum am dankbarsten ist. Und trotzdem lässt die Spannung hier allmählich nach, aber immer noch gibt es den Sympathieträger Bana, seinen lustigen Kollegen und einige Leckerbissen wie eine von Fliegen umschwärmte Leiche und eine gekreuzigte Katze. A decent exorcist thriller that puts its money on a realistic environment. No shortage of surprises - and they work pretty well, even though nothing absolutely amazing and, if it wasn’t for the fairly standard story, I would definitely give it four stars. The clash in the finale was intense, thrilling and breathtaking. Derrickson has a talent at creating a great atmosphere, Dr. Strange is in good hands. (28.10.2014)

The only problem with Derrickson's film is that it presents exactly the type of horror that any experienced viewer is currently oversaturated with: ghosts, strange noises under the bed, a peculiar priest, exorcisms. This template is so tired that despite the director's enormous skill, which holds the viewer's attention throughout and searches for themes beyond all James Wan's ghost stories, the film doesn't have much chance to break through. Big plus points just for pushing an interesting detective storyline, for the music by The Doors, and for Eric Bana, who's still got it. But even that is not enough to satisfy me this time... 70% (24.10.2014)

Technically, this is absolutely divine. Legendary shot composition, transitions in focus, lighting, and masks. Thank you. The rest of the cast, led by the haha hoo hoo owl and the integrated demonic MP3 in the hero's head, does its best to make you spit Bruckheimer-flavored popcorn at the screen and giggle through the next two scenes. Fortunately, we're told that the senselessness of the dark forces' actions is due to the fact that we as humans are unable to grasp it, so that takes care of that. Plus, I'm of the opinion that Scott Derrickson’s ol’ pal Jesus should dock his allowance. (25.10.2014)

Well done! A horror film that is watchable and enjoyable, unlike all that weird mainstream stuff. The film builds on a good story and cast and is filled with a perfectly grim atmosphere from the start. I was going to give it five stars, but I was put off by the ending. From the rescue of the wife and daughter until the closing credits, it turned into a very unpleasant surprise and even disappointment. The screenwriter is not to blame, he couldn't have come up with a different ending, as the film was based on true events... (10.08.2016)

Derrickson's film overall works well and it's clear that he is capable of storytelling, having good moments in it and eventually building it up. If the part with the wife and daughter were cut out, the overall tone of the film wouldn't change and it might even be a bit more dynamic and suspenseful. The gore scenes are great and the exorcism itself is truly the climax. If it weren't for the constant feeling of repetition, I would give the film an even higher rating. (07.02.2015)
