Die Fantastische Welt von Oz

Ein schlecht besetzter James Franco. Die zwei Hexen Kunis + Weisz erreichen das Niveau von der einen aus Snow White and the Huntsman (Theron) überhaupt nicht. Die einzige spannende Szene im Film ist die Verfolgung mit dem muskulösen Typen im Schwarzweißprolog. Und die einzigen zauberhaften Momente die mit der Porzellanpuppe. Der Film ist nicht gelungen, was bei dem universell erfolgreichen Raimi (in kleinen Thrillern und Horrorfilmen sowie in Blockbustern) überraschend ist. (14.03.2013)

For the first half, I was seething with the words: "This isn't a movie, it's just a dusty attraction!". A chain carousel that gives you the creeps, a product for one purpose: so that the capos at Disney can afford new limousines. But there is one big BUT. Although I subscribe to a completely different world of cinema, I ended up feeling like someone on a weight loss diet who visits a candy store with all its delicacies wrapped in colorful and at first glance tempting packaging, and bites into one of them. Superficial, I know, but sometimes you just succumb to something like that easily. The last act improved the final impression, and the incorporation of technical conveniences into the fairy tale world was reminiscent of the best of The Wizard of Oz from 1939, or Vaughn's Stardust, which is still proof that a fairytale can be done in a clever way. So in the end....in the end, it wasn't as silly and overwrought as the disastrous trailer might make it seem. (09.03.2013)

Bloody hell, Raimi! Why? (07.06.2013)

As it sometimes happens, you get movies reviewed here at Filmbooster that most people would expect to provide them at least with some proper cinematographic entertainment. Well, Sam Raimi is no dummy, so it was clear also that what he would make wouldn’t be your typical genre movie, but a typical blockbuster that can make a lot of money. And if I set aside the sometimes too wacky editing, or the crazy camerawork, and given the way people criticize this movie and bring it down to average, I was pretty satisfied. Sure, you can see that the whole thing is shot in front of a green screen, but I didn’t mind that. The premise of the story is a bit different than what you’d expect. This is no Alice in Wonderland. At times, it’s scary, especially the characters of the witches themselves – that’s pretty typical for the director… and at times it can really lift you up and make you laugh. And that’s good to know. The movie has it in it. The fact that it’s not the way everybody had dreamed it would be and everybody’s upset, that’s another thing. Sam Raimi simply made a fairy-tale with everything that entails. I was satisfied and I must admit that James Franco’s transformation in this movie was flawless. (05.02.2014)

OK, ich weiß nicht, was Raimi gerade an der 150x gezeigten generischen Version der Handlung folgenden Formats besonders fasziniert hat: "Der Held reist in ein Fantasy-Reich, wo drei Hexen herrschen, von denen eine böse ist und nur er sie besiegen kann." Tatsache bleibt, dass die Durchführung überhaupt nicht schlecht ist und das Ergebnis definitiv kein unnötiges Remake abgibt (Franco ähnelt Judy Garland nicht so richtig, die ganze Geschichte handelt von etwas anderem, wobei der Rahmen der Welt vollends anders aussieht), noch ein Prequel, wie ich eine Weile gedacht habe (aber es wird wohl schwer sein, mit einem Ballon, die Halluzinationen von jemand andere zu bereisen - außerdem in einem Zustand, der noch nicht eingetreten ist). Demnach ist das ganze im Hinblick auf Genre und Inhalt eben ein anderes Liedchen, mit Gesang und Hund aus dem Jahr 1939, ein Lied, in welchem der auf eine witzige Art und Weise krampfatige James Franco einen leicht variierenden Refrain singt - Ich bin ein Schwein / Lügner / Scharlatan und Frauen fallen in seine lustvollen Arme fallen, als sei er Rudolph Valentino. Nach einer poetischen, lustig-einfallsreichen Einleitung, die eine Höflichkeitsknicks im Schwarzweißfilmstil erbringt, mitsamt Papierdekorationen sowie einer Messe, folgt eine breitformatige hyperfarbig 3D-Serie mit vielen digitalen Blumen, pastellfarbenem Mind-Geschlechtsverher und niedlichen Kreaturen, die allerdings Raimi mit mehr Weitsicht und Sinn für Ironie waten lässt als Alice in Wonderland von Burton. Er wird so langsam Zeit, etwas damit herumzuspielen, den bewegten Bildern Tribut zu zollen und den Vorgängern aus den späten 1930er Jahren mit Details Tribut zu zollt, jedoch würde ich nicht sagen, dass dies mir erklären würde, warum man hier diese recycelte Handlung zu sehen bekommt, und einem den Dreigroschenromanen ähnelnden Gemecker der Hexem zuhrören sollte. Außerdem wirkt die Version aus dem Jahr 1939 ketzerisch gesehen viel cleverer, nachdenklicher und als schöner darin zu singen ... und Überhaupt. (07.03.2013)

Raimi has taken a story for little girls and re-vamped it into a movie for little boys with a soft-spot for machinery and magic tricks. Edison’s legacy is alive even here and I’m glad. However, it fails when confronted with real magic and some aspects are very jarring. Paradoxically, it is the Land of Oz itself, its laws and its fame are responsible for this, because the story about a dapper fraudster who finds good inside himself works only in terms of its artiness, but is spoiled by the poor production design, full of obviously digital or even plastic substitutes for the real world. Franco isn’t suited to a world like that, but that’s what I liked about his Oz. He’s a modern person, but with fantasy and ending up in this strange land doesn’t surprise him, he just wants to get as many laughs as he can from it (the scene with the cashier reminds me of Scrooge McDuck). I didn’t like the trio of magicians one bit. Just Mila Kunis was magically naive at the beginning, but things went downhill with her after her transformation. If a new and original world were presented or if I were younger, I would have given Oz: the Great and Powerful more. P.S.: I get Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz confused and these alternative stories don’t help me at all. Is it only me, or you have a similar problem? (28.05.2013)

Wenn es etwas gibt, das ich am meisten an klassischen Hollywoodfilmen hasse, dann ist es das Dreigespann Der Zauberer von Oz in überdrehten Technicolor-Farben, das Autorenwunder Citizen Kane und die Wisconsin-Schule. Doch, o Wunder, Raimis visionärer Ansatz und seine Vorliebe für die technischen Errungenschaften des Jahres 1905 haben das Ihrige getan. Wenn also James Franco, der bewiesen hat, dass er die Hauptrolle in spektakulären und geradezu intimen Dramen über einen Mann, einen Stein und eine Hand spielen kann, Bruce Campbell in einer schrecklichen Maske, Ted Raimi irgendwo in der Menge, Danny Elfman über einem Notenblatt... an ihrem Platz sind, dann ist alles in Ordnung. Das Epizentrum der Lust basiert auf dem Vorhandensein des Praxinoskops und anderem technischen Protoquatsch, auf dem Namen Edison und auf der Tatsache, dass 3D seine Karten schön auf den Tisch gelegt hat (in der Tiefe und außerhalb des Bildschirms), und ich habe tatsächlich zum ersten Mal erlebt, was Curly Sue bereits 1991 erlebte. Was für eine zeitliche Kluft! Das Porzellanpüppchen war unglaublich süß, aber irgendwie weiß ich nicht, welche Hexe liebenswerter war? Endlich echte Mägdekriege! (06.03.2013)

Ein sehr schönes Märchen. Ich war nur (unangenehm) überrascht, wie negativ die Hauptfigur ist. Dafür kann ich ihm den fünften Stern nicht geben, selbst wenn ich es hundertmal tun wollte. Ansonsten gehöre ich aber zu den Zuschauer*innen, die das Kleben der Beine der Porzellanpuppe sehr gerührt hat, die die bunte Trickshow bezaubert hat (wenn ich mich über Raimis "Ausmalbilder“ aufregen würde, wäre es wie das Schimpfen über Technicolor aus dem ursprünglichen Film) und die den digitalen Affen lustig gefunden haben. James Franco spielt gut. Es ist nur schade, dass er so unsympathisch ist. Die drei Hexen sind perfekt, die Musik von Danny Elfman sehr angenehm (das Motiv!). Viereinhalb. (12.03.2013)

I might have considered adding an extra star if the creators hadn't shamelessly borrowed from Tim Burton and added colors that reminded me of Pushing Daisies. Unfortunately, the movie didn't quite hit the mark for me. Rachel Weisz was more appealing to my eye than Michelle Williams, so it didn't take long for me to realize I was leaning toward the dark side of the force. Mila Kunis was also in the mix, whom I'm not particularly fond of. Thankfully, she underwent a transformation early on and became more tolerable. But let's be honest, it didn't salvage the story, and I can't say I was impressed by this prequel to Dorothy's adventures. / Lesson learned: Even a warehouse worker in a factory can read Virgil in the original, and even a carnival magician can become a king. "The Powerful Ruler of Oz" tries to overcome the shortcomings in the story through its form. It works similarly to how it worked in "Alice in Wonderland". The form will impress you, visually it's an orgy, although not for everyone, for some it will be a bit too much, but you will still leave the cinema disappointed, or at least not as fulfilled as you probably imagined. It is simply a story that is too simple. Furthermore, there is a lack of a true climax - it will only occur in the film "The Wizard of Oz". This is a great shame. Another wasted opportunity. I somewhat don't understand why Raimi didn't use more of his sense of horror atmosphere and horror elements. Not that you won't like the film, but you won't leave it excited. Instead, you will be thinking about what you will have for dinner and quickly forget about this experience. (19.11.2013)
