Cosmopolis

In Time - Deine Zeit läuft ab für Intellektuelle. Eine schwer verdauliche Kritik des Kapitalismus, voller unverständlicher Dialoge, von denen die meisten nichts Sinnvolles sagen. Sie sollen das Publikum nur in eine Filmwelt übertragen, die man noch nicht gesehen hat. David versucht nach Crash den Posten des Regisseurs zu verteidigen, der das Unverfilmbare verfilmt. Ein bildhaft ästhetischer, durch die beunruhigende Atmosphäre pulsierender Trip, der mit Zuschauererwartungen spielt. Man weiß nicht, was das nächste Wort einer Figur sein wird, geschweige denn, was in der nächsten Szene passiert (die ausgezeichnete Episode mit der Waffe am Basketball-Spielplatz). Pattinson, über dessen Besetzung ich am Anfang den Kopf geschüttelt habe, ist der größte Pluspunkt des Films und er spielt perfekt. Binoche, Amalric und Giamatti toben sich in den kleineren Rollen aus und sind eine angenehme Erfrischung. Schade, dass wegen der Darstellung der Entpersönlichung von der kosmopolitischen Gesellschaft auch der Film selbst entpersönlicht bleibt – eine Ausnahme ist nur die Beziehung von Pattinson und seiner Ehefrau. Das Paar hat zusammen die besten Filmszenen mit den einzigen greifbaren Dialogen. Cosmopolis ist ein verspielter Unsinn, der mir deshalb Spaß gemacht hat, weil er anders ist. Und ich habe mich auch bei der Vorstellung amüsiert, was für ein Gesicht die Massen von Teenager-Fans von Pattinson machen werden :-D (10.07.2012)

What feels like roughly four hours of toilet philosophising, which Cronenberg disparages in places, but through most of the film he just lets it monotonously flow forth, which is so mind-numbing that you will probably lose any desire to hear the film’s message, whatever that may be (for example, the message that we haven’t been told anything). I will have to watch it again to confirm or refute the impression that this is Cronenberg’s shallowest and least atmospheric film, but I’m going to need to psych myself up for that over the next several weeks. 50% (04.08.2012)

Es reicht nicht aus, archaische Dialoge abzukupfern und sie mittels der stereotypen Methode von Auf- x Gegenaufnahme aufzunehmen. Es gibt hier nur einige exzentrische Momente und sie klingen eher selbstparodierend, wobei das Ende bereits ausgesprochen wie ein verbaler Durchfall anmutet. Obwohl mir im Grunde genommen das, was der Film aussagt, gefällt, vermag es Cronenberg nicht, die Form zu verteidigen. Nicht einmal den zum Verzweifeln uncharismatischen Pattinson, dem man selbst die dekadente Langeweile nicht abnimmt. (08.07.2012)

It’s not exactly an enjoyable watch, but Cosmopolis is definitely worth seeing. For its differentness at least. Also to see Pattinson (just how many horrified fans left the theater in disgust? :D) who gives the best performance of his career so far. I must admit that I found myself nodding off a bit during the first half, some of the theorizing dialogs were tiresome, but that soon stopped. Basically non-existent relationships (except for the wide and that grampa) rule out any sympathy for the characters. The music, combining Shore’s abilities with the electronic project Metric, is almost hypnotizing in places. This isn’t a satisfying picture and that’s on purpose. Maybe that’s why I rather liked it. I’ll certainly play it again, the more I think about it, the more interesting that proposed journey to the barber’s seems. (01.10.2012)

Ich zähle mich zwar nicht zu den eingefleischten Fans, aber ich nehme diese Person seit Crash wahr, aber ich war nie besonders angetan von ihm. Wie also ist Cosmopolis? Gewöhnlich. Im Kontext von Cronenbergs Werk nicht besonders alarmierend, nicht besonders aufschlussreich. Aber seine Zusammenarbeit mit Robert Pattinson hat ihm offenbar gefallen, und so haben wir noch mehr Maps to the Stars... (29.10.2016)

Meine Gefühle aus diesem Bild werden sehr gut vom Dialog einer der Hauptheldinnen ausgedrückt, als sie erzählt, wie sie ins Theater ging, um ein Stück zu sehen, zu dem nur sehr wenige Leute kamen, und fünf Minuten nachdem der Vorhang aufging, wusste sie, warum das so war, woraufhin sie verärgert in der Pause ging. Beim Zuschauen von Cosmopolis fühlte ich mich ungefähr genauso, nur blieb ich bis zum Ende. (17.03.2019)

The film captures the nearly twenty-four-hour-long self-destructive descent of one man, one archetype, and one mental world. The desire to obtain and understand abstract pure power, passing through wealth itself, the desire to predict, control, and live in the future, enjoying a primitive sense of superiority and strength without sympathy for the surroundings due to one's position. All of this collapses upon realizing that the future cannot be controlled and that death awaits everyone indiscriminately. In the end, it did indeed catch up with Eric Packer not only for how he lived but mainly for how he thought. The film is an above-average faithful adaptation of its source material, which is both a positive and a negative. The disadvantage is for those who have not read the book - then the film will probably turn into a series of scenes that are only understood by chance, or rather, or not at all... I cannot overly criticize that the film did not capture all the thoughts of the printed source, as that is simply a limitation of almost all films based on any book. I had not seen R. Pattinson in any major role before this, so I can objectively say that he does not (particularly) detract from the quality of the film. (05.09.2012)

The day in the limousine passes in a way that makes you think about where society is actually heading. Eric is an example of how indifferent others are to us. Everyone is free to him, just like their own destiny. He has reached a stage where he doesn't really care about anything. Peeing in the limousine is as big of a problem for him as killing someone. Does he actually care about anything? What do we care about? Can we still talk together? And when we talk together, does it have any meaning? I think this is another excellent Cronenberg study that deserves attention, just try to endure it and contemplate about it. If the film doesn't say anything to you anyway, I'm sorry, that can also be its result. But does it really matter? It can affect everyone differently. (22.11.2013)
