Ein nostalgisches Zurückblicken auf die herzlichste Etappe der Kinematografie. Eine Filmpoesie für Zeitzeugen, vielleicht die letzte ihrer Art. Wenn der Film 20 Minuten kürzer wäre, würde es sich um eines der besten Werke von Steven handeln. Dass es einer der persönlichsten Filme ist, spürt man in jedem Augenblick. (26.02.2012)

A much more unbearable film than I could have ever expected. Technically speaking, it’s good, of course, but the dialogues are a pain to listen to, the main characters are unlikeable (all of them, and the main teenage redneck most of all), the story is driven by either chance or the stupidity of the characters, and the whole lot is so awfully pathetic and kitsch that it made my head spin. I think the world around us is full of better stories and I don’t understand why anyone should care whether one mare will be reunited with an unlikeable young guy or not. And, if the animal in this film intentionally and consciously (!!!) sacrifices itself in order to help its friend, and people actually believe it and are moved by it… something is bloody wrong in this world. It’s been long since something pissed me off so much. Two stars for the technical aspect, but unfortunately, Spielberg is no longer guarantee of quality mainstream entertainment. (13.01.2012)

Ein Film über Liebe, Gütlichkeit und Pferde, in welchem der Große Krieg auch um ein Vielfaches pathetischer und moralpredigender herüberkommt als in allen Antikriegsflugblättern der 1920er und 1930er Jahre. Doch darum dreht sich paradoxerweise das Hauptthema gar nicht, denn der größte Nachteil dieses faszinierenden Spektakels ist Spielbergs absolute Vorliebe für die Oberfläche. Alles Innige, Psychologische verschwindet aus den Aufnahmen, denn alles wird von einem reichhaltigen visuellen Arrangement übernommen. Sowohl Menschen als auch Pferde fungieren hier explizit als Requisiten in der lehrbuchartigen Vorgehensweise des Filmemachers. Momente der Rührung stoßen immer wieder auf dasselbe - es ist keine menschliche (Pferde-)Geschichte, die uns da beeindruckt, sondern es ist nur eine respektable audiovisuelle Konstruktion, unter der sich (im Gegensatz zu Stevens berühmten Filmen) überhaupt nichts befindet, nur ein Genre-Vakuum. Dies ist selbst für ein kleines Märchen, wie es Gefährten mehr als alles andere ist, eben zu wenig. (20.02.2012)

This is going against the flow a little, but my problem with Warhorse isn’t that it’s a “chintzy Hollywood Spielbergesque tearjerker", but that in the end it isn’t like that at all. But that’s what it’s trying to be; too much, in fact; it is made like that but in its core it lacks the foundation to all movies like this - emotions. The bond between Albert and Joey is so slap-dash; it is ground up into mini-stories that blend into one; in the end I didn’t give a damn about either of them or about the movie either. And the movie should either have been much shorter (and just about those two) or should have been a regular mini-series, where each episode could tell one of the ten-minute escapades we see here. A moment of a colorful children's book, a moment of war hell and a moment of odyssey. Spielberg, with a relative bet on certainty, knows how to surprise and although the thoroughness or interconnectedness of individual episodes sometimes heavily stumbles, I still have to nod approvingly with a slight reservation. Considering how grand and consequently unfortunately slightly prolonged the film War Horse feels, it probably couldn't have been aimed more precisely. There are too many characters and moods here, and the plot either needed to be shortened by a third or stretched by an hour. The positive resonance resounds the loudest thanks to Williams' amazing main theme and a few touching moments, against which there is no defense. 70% (25.02.2012)

This is a pretty special movie for me and I must say that I really enjoyed it. Spielberg filmed this in his own way and it ended up so that every scene looks like a poster. Some scenes stand out incredibly. The ride through the battlefield is the most powerful scene of the movie, thanks to John Williams’ music too. Sometimes maybe half of the good feeling from the movie comes from the somebody sitting next to you. (27.02.2012)

Gefährten tritt in die Fußstapfen von Der rote Baron und Flyboys - Helden der Lüfte. Eine neue Welle des Interesses am Ersten Weltkrieg wäre eine großartige Sache, sie müsste nur auf Filmen beruhen, die kein solcher Abklatsch sind. Die Erinnerung an Düsseldorf wird ewiger und bunter sein als ein Sonnenuntergang in allen Schattierungen von Orange. (23.02.2012)

Spielberg did what Cameron did years ago when he was filming Titanic, War Horse is not a groundbreaking in terms of plot, it’s a rather classic story, but Steven indirectly winks at us and suggests that this is how the true blockbuster films of the silver screen used to be made, with real emotions that are not often seen nowadays. The film aesthetics, the camera work, the lighting, etc. are also not standard that I would call them old-school. Therefore, it is a tribute to the old school. Whether it works in the end, everyone has to decide for themselves. For seasoned film enthusiasts, fans of the work of an eternal child, and the older population, War Horse will be a nostalgic escape from everyday reality. For the rest, it will probably just be a tedious bore, which half will consider as pathetic. Spielberg filmed what he wanted and did it very well. The scene with the horse against barbed wire is gripping. (25.03.2012)

Steven Spielberg sitzt fest im Sattel! Immer noch. Und diesmal auch im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Er hält fest die Zügel und… Schon gut, schon gut, keine weiteren Pferdevergleiche mehr. Mit Gefährten sieht es leider so aus, wie ich gedacht habe. Viele Zuschauer*innen haben wahrscheinlich einen Kriegsfilm mit ununterbrochener Action, einer mit Schlamm und Blut verschmutzen Kamera sowie einem Haufen von Toten erwartet… Dabei haben sie nicht gewusst, dass Spielberg eine Adaptation eines Buches dreht, das für ältere Kinder bestimmt ist. Der Stoff war für ihn (im besten Sinne des Wortes) ideal. Spielberg hat die Geschichte mit allem Drum und Dran auf die Leinwand übertragen. Wenn der Film von Morpurgos literarischer Vorlage abweicht, dann hatte er dafür auch einen guten Grund (das Buch ist in der Ichform und wird von einem Pferd erzählt – das bedeutet, dass es in ihm keine Schlachtszenen gibt, wie z. B. die unglaublich fesselnde Schützengrabenszene von Albert im Film). Dass die pastellfarbenen Szenen aus Dartmoore fürchterlich kitschig sind? Umso größer ist doch ihr Kontrast zu den Kriegsszenen. Dass die vertraute Beziehung von Albert und Joey manchen lustig vorkommt? Hatten Sie etwa nie ein Tier, mit dem Sie stundenlang gesprochen haben? Nennt man nicht das, was viele beinahe als "Zoophilie light“ bezeichnen, zufälligerweise Freundschaft? Und gerade darum geht es in dem Film. Es ist eine Ode an die Freundschaft. An die Freundschaft zwischen Menschen, zwischen Menschen und Pferden sowie zwischen Pferden. Wenn man sieht, wie liebevoll sich die Soldaten (egal, welche Uniform sie tragen) um die Pferde kümmern, kann es einen gar nicht stören, dass Engländer, Deutsche und Franzosen nicht ihre Sprachen sprechen, sondern nur Englisch… Es sind doch eigentlich alles normale Menschen, welche ein paar mächtige Lumpen, die sich eines Morgens entschieden haben, dass es Krieg geben wird, gegeneinander aufgehetzt haben. Im Film gibt es viele starke und denkwürdige Szenen (einerseits handelt es sich um "unbekümmerte“ Momente, wie das Pflügen oder das Autorennen, andererseits um Kriegsszenen – da sind es vor allem der Kavallerieangriff, die Windmühle und die großartige Sequenz mit dem durch das wütende "Niemandsland“ rennenden Pferd und dem Durchschneiden der Drähte). Ich hatte keine andere Wahl, als mir diese Szenen zufrieden anzuschauen, dem göttlichen John Williams zu lauschen (seine Musik ist hier so, wie ich sie am liebsten mag), manchmal gerührt zu sein und in meinen Gedanken zu applaudieren. Ich habe nicht gewusst, wie lange der Film dauern wird. Ich hätte aber nie gedacht, dass das ganze Abenteuer 150 Minuten hat. Die Zeit ist unglaublich schnell vergangen. Und die Geschichte hat Wärme ausgestrahlt. (02.03.2012)

I have no choice but to write that Spielberg did not disappoint again. At first I was a bit worried, because there have already been a lot of films about horses and the space for filmmakers to tread with this subject is slowly shrinking, and I couldn't stand the extremely unlikeable and dull Irvine after a few scenes. Fortunately, we have the best director ever behind the camera. The story slowly gains momentum, Irvine disappears from the scene and the futility of war is depicted all the more strongly because Spielberg has already taken a slightly different view of those horrors and is no longer so focused on commercial success as he was before. War Horse is a beautiful film that should warm every viewer's heart, and the happy ending is delivered in a precisely measured way that manages to move without marring the overall picture and atmosphere. The taste of the story will stay on my tongue for a long time and it’s definitely a film I would like to repeat. (19.01.2013)

I am not a big fan of Steven Spielberg, although I acknowledge that he has done a lot for the film industry. His movies like "Duel" or "Jaws" are great examples of quality thrillers/horrors. I also appreciate some of his other films, but in recent years, he has not made anything noteworthy. They are good films, but none of them are as breathtaking as they used to be. "War Horse" definitely isn't. I would compare Steven to Robert Rodriguez. Robert occasionally - perhaps too often - feels the need to make simpler family films. His "Spy Kids" series has a total of 4 parts, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see more. Similarly, Steven makes family films that are dramatic, tearjerking, and quite different from his "more adult" work. "E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial" became a hated film for many, but it had its qualities. "War Horse" just wants to present a big little story about a horse. Yes, the horse really is in the lead role, in a two-and-a-half-hour movie. But Steven softened, and even though the movie takes place during World War I, don't expect anything similar to "Saving Private Ryan". No war violence, just a family spectacle that tries to be dramatic but comes off as incredibly sentimental. This is definitely not my cup of tea.
