Green Lantern

At first glance, everything is as it should be. Ryan is a likable guy, Blake is every straight man's wet dream who isn't blind, the special effects team has been paid generously for their overtime, and proven hitmaker Martin Campbell manages it all. Yet only half of it works. No, more like a third because that's about how much the "civilian" world takes off the whole. The section in which the lanterns glow green tries to cloak the boundless naivety in a cheap pomposity that probably comes from the comic books, but it struck me as a cheap carnival ride that (hand on heart) looks pretty stupid. It's not boring and it keeps on flashing, and someone is always jabbering (quite often humorously), but it lacks that drop of soulfulness. This was the worst comic book film six months before Thor. This comic book madness is guaranteed to be appreciated by the fans the original comic book. The film doesn’t pull its punches, and during its uncompromising 109 minutes it presents a story that goes against all usual comic book adaptation characteristics. It’s just science fiction about superheroes from outer space fighting for Mother Earth outside of Earth. I have to say that it had its charm, but it was off to a rather slow start. Ryan Reynolds was great, but he could hasten the transformation and not wait for it until the middle of the film. Anyhow, I can’t say that I wasn’t captivated, as this was something else than you’d expect and that also counts for something. (24.12.2012)

Der kleine grüne Mann hat keine Probleme damit, sich selbst nicht ernst zu nehmen, so dass letzten Endes das, was ihn infolgedessen killt, eher regietechnische und dramaturgische Unentschlossenheit ist. Eine einzige Szene umschreibt die gesamte Lantern-Problematik: Hal fliegt da mit seiner Auserwählten heran, um supermanmäßig Töne des Liebesgurgelns anklingen zu lassen. Es folgt eine sehr gute Parodie auf ähnliche "Superhelden"-Kitschprodukte, wo ich mit Begeisterung lachte. Jedoch in der nächsten Szene stoßen wir auf einen völlig identischen, diesmal jedoch todernst gedrehten Kitsch, der aussieht, als ob die Szene vorher nicht existiert hätte. Und so geht das immer, Campbell zwinkert dem Betrachter einen Moment zu, um ihm sodann jedoch sofort unverdünnt Langeweile und Naivität zu servieren. Der ganze Film hat eine ähnliche Struktur wie Thor, jedoch während der da "oben" ernst und "der unten" lässig klang, sieht Green Lantern auf beiden ebenen wie eine idiotische und geschlechtslose Retuschierung aus. Dabei ist doch das Potenzial unbestreitbar - aber aus einem Helden, der mittels seiner Fantasie alles materialisieren kann, haben die Macher mit einer an Tom Cruises erinnernden Fantasie aus Top Gun einen Idioten gemacht. Ich bin gar nicht überrascht, dass die Warners unbedingt einen Zweier wollen. Solch eine verbrannte Chance tut insbesondere in einer Zeit weh, in der es den Comics gut geht. (11.08.2011)

Just as hallucinatory and incomprehensible as Flash Gordon in its day. Whether this is good or bad, I am not sure; in any case, guilty pleasure par excellence. (07.11.2011)

When my instinct told me during the epic trailers that Green Lantern would be awesome, I decided to give it a chance and not be discouraged by the mocking initial reactions. I admit that the leader of the extraterrestrial protectors of order in the form of a red sage consulting with gray heads may not appeal to everyone, but at the same time, I am amazed at how well this apparently disparate mosaic fits together. Guardians, Lanterns, a traumatic past, personal doubts, and a love story with the beautiful Blake Lively. Being this charmingly conflicted and yet comic book complex is no joke, and thanks to the script handling it with ease, it almost hints at the highest rating. Maybe it would have deserved a sequel, but realistically, it never had a chance. 85% for unexpectedly strong competition to the already excellently made Marvel. (24.09.2011)

Nice effects are everywhere these days. And so we get an accumulation of bland films that are nice to look at but evoke almost no emotion. Apart from a bunch of gimmicks, there was nothing to get me into the plot. Blake Lively is beautiful and Ryan Reynolds is quite likable. Except that I knew that before I saw it. Where are the days when I was rooting for the main character and couldn't tear myself away from the screen? Now I'm just watching him phone it in to see what he looks like doing it. A weak 2.5 stars. A monumental mess that is only watchable thanks to the really effective special effects. The screenplay is the sort of utter atrocity that makes many people look down on the world of comic books. And it seemed to me that Campbell wasn’t even trying. The completely disgusting (God, that forehead!) villain, played by Peter Sarsgaard, is a superfluous character for the “story" and Reynold’s portrayal of Jordan is also lackluster. I really liked both the concept of a ring that can materialize the imagination and also an intergalactic police force, because although they are wacky, these ideas offered material for first class entertainment, not for this rehash. I don’t even know why I gave it three stars. Perhaps because of Blake Lively, maybe. (23.09.2011)

Ok, ich mag DC definitiv lieber und würde lieber einen JLA-Film sehen als Avengers. Aber bis jetzt ist diese Gleichung noch sehr schief. Bisher gibt also die DC-Cartoons und diesen kühnen Green Lantern. Und es macht nicht viel aus, dass er nicht gelungen ist, denn der Wunsch der Konkurrenz nach einem Marvel-ähnlichen Erfolg ist stärker als ein kleiner Schritt in diese Richtung. Ich persönlich bin nicht so sehr an Green Lantern als eigenständige Figur interessiert, aber als Teil von JLA ist er in Ordnung. Wenn es ihm also gelingt, das Publikum, das sich in Comicverfilmungen verirrt hat, so zu verwirren, dass eines Tages ein JLA-Film gedreht wird, hat Hal Jordan seinen Teil dazu beigetragen. Und als solchen betrachte ich ihn als eigenständigen Film, der zwar mit einer Menge Zeug vollgestopft wurde, aber immer noch eine abendfüllende Geschichte ist, die von "Aladdins Wunderlampe" und der Notwendigkeit, das Böse im Zeitalter des aufkommenden Nationalsozialismus zu bekämpfen, ausgeht. Heute kann Green Lantern auf eine 72-jährige Geschichte zurückblicken, und dies ist sein erster Spielfilm. Anhand des klassischen Superman-Schemas zeigt er uns, was am hellsten Tag und in der schwärzesten Nacht passiert. Und es heißt: "Je größer du bist, desto schneller verbrennst du dich." Schade um Blake Lively, aber vielleicht tritt sie in der Fortsetzung mehr aus dem Schatten ihrer Rolle in Gossip Girl heraus. (03.06.2012)

Unfortunately, it's the same thing again. Saving the world, an indestructible villain, some kind of magical energy, the right values. Not even the proven hitmaker Martin Campbell, otherwise known as a great innovator of established brands (Zorro, James Bond), can save this from boredom and mediocrity. Not that Reynolds isn't great, it's just that the insanely overblown space worlds set pieces are just a hair worse than the whole questionable mythology. So hats off to the visual effects artists, yes, but I wanted a better project, or better execution. The big advantage goes to Blake Lively, who could have easily just stood somewhere in an evening gown and everything would have been fine. But that's not enough for a cinematic experience, especially in a comic book adaptation, where the overkill is insane and destroying planets in the umpteenth way would already put off even a die-hard fan of the color green. Ein ziemlich unterschätzter Comic-Film. Dabei hat Green Lantern alles, was er haben sollte: Eine fantastische visuelle Seite und erstklassige Spezialeffekte (eine Stufe bombastischer als Thor, Iron Man und Co.), einen ausgezeichneten, sympathischen und vor allem witzigen Haupthelden, Actionszenen, von denen es zwar nicht viele gibt, die aber richtig toll sind (das großartige Training mit den Steinen, den Schwertern, der Motorsäge, dem Maschinengewehr mit Rotationsprinzip…), einen exakt funktionierenden Soundtrack von Newton Howard… Außerdem hatte aber Green Lantern auch richtig Pech. Im Vergleich zu den populäreren Marvel-Filmen wirkt er wie ihr kleiner Stiefbruder, mit dem niemand so richtig spielen will (ein ähnliches Duell hat seinerzeit Formans Valmont mit Gefährliche Liebschaften verloren, obwohl es auch kein schlechter Film ist). Und das finde ich sehr schade. Das Einzige, was ich an dem Film kritisieren kann, ist die leicht überladene Handlung. Man merkt, dass die Filmemacher mit einem zweiten Teil rechnen, in dem die Nebenfiguren aus dem ersten Teil (und wahrscheinlich auch die vielen großartigen außerirdischen Green Lanterns) mehr Raum bekommen würden und in dem es auch einen richtigen Schuft geben würde (warten Sie bis zur Hälfte des Abspanns). Zu einem zweiten Teil sage ich gleich Ja. Vier Sterne.__PS: Der "Fisch-Alien" mit der Stimme von Geoffrey Rush ist toll.__PPS: Wahrscheinlich das erste Mal seit Avatar - Aufbruch nach Pandora kam mir das 3D-Format bei einem Spielfilm (der Angriff von Parallax!) nicht überflüssig vor.__PPPS: Es würde mich interessieren, wie viele unzufriedene Schlaumeier Green Lantern im Kino gesehen haben und wie viele zu Hause auf einem 15 × 20 cm großen Bildschirm. When the film "Green Lantern" was about to come out in theaters, I was really looking forward to it, hoping that it would expand the world of comic book cinema. Green Lantern is one of those heroes who are not as well-known here, so he deserved a better presentation, which would also help with comic book sales, as a comic was released to coincide with the film. The comic that was released by Crew was quite successful - I'm speaking in terms of quality, I don't know about the publisher's profits - but when it comes to the film... No, we can't speak about success. Green Lantern is not a trivial character, but one of the most popular superheroes of DC Comics. He is also one of the oldest. However, the film dedicated to him is a complete flop. At first glance, it is noticeable how incredibly kitschy it is, how all those colors come together in just a big ceramic gnome that most of us wouldn't buy. And the story? There's actually not much to talk about. Hal Jordan meets an alien who is dying and at the last moment transforms him into Green Lantern, one of the guardians of the universe. This is followed by occasionally funny sequences on the planet Oa, which is the headquarters of the Green Lanterns. However, the film "Green Lantern" was not able to appreciate the vastness of the universe at all. Green Lantern's stories are epic, but this is simply not enough. There is a lot of green, but nobody really played with the script. Ryan Reynolds once again showed that he doesn't always have to act much, sometimes his face and body are enough. Definitely one of the worst movies of 2011. The story is dull and rather hackneyed, and I couldn’t wait for the movie to be over, which hasn’t happened to me in a long time. Seen once and I hope that for the last time. (10.01.2012)
