Martin Brundle (Eric Stoltz) trägt von Geburt an das schreckliche Erbe seines Vaters in sich. Er wächst unter ständiger Kontrolle in einem abgeschlossenen Labor des Grossindustriellen Anton Bartok auf, der nur an der Ausschlachtung eines fantastischen Experiments interessiert ist. Durch seine außergewöhnliche Fähigkeiten gelingt es Martin das Rätsel der Teleportation, der Transformation von Materie, zu lösen. Er verliebt sich in die attraktive Beth (Daphne Zuniga) und hofft, endlich ein normales Leben führen zu können.
