Die kleine Ofelia flüchtet sich vor ihrem boshaften Stiefvater in eine Fantasiewelt... Spanien 1944, fünf Jahre nach Ende des Bürgerkriegs: Die Truppen des faschistischen Generals Franco haben gesiegt, aber noch immer gibt es Rebellen, die sich in den Bergen versteckt halten und gegen das Regime kämpfen. Hauptmann Vidal hält die Stellung an diesem entlegenen Posten mit dem Ziel, die Rebellen endgültig zu beseitigen. Seine neue Ehefrau, die hochschwangere Carmen, zieht mit ihrer elfjährigen Tochter Ofelia aus erster Ehe zu ihm aufs Land. Doch Ofelia will den neuen Mann ihrer Mutter nicht als Vater akzeptieren - seine Kälte und Bosheit widern das junge Mädchen an, und sie entflieht in eine Fantasiewelt. Von einem eigenartigen Insekt angelockt, betritt Ofelia den Wald, der das Gehöft umgibt. Undurchsichtig und mystisch birgt dieser zahlreiche Geheimnisse und Rätsel. So entpuppt sich das eigenartige Insekt als Fee, die Ofelia eines Nachts abholt, um sie in die Unterwelt zu führen. Hier unten wartet eine seltsame Gestalt auf das Mädchen: Ein Faun eröffnet ihr, dass sie die verschollene Prinzessin Moana sei. Um sicherzugehen, dass sich ihr Wesen nicht verändert hat, muss sie drei Prüfungen bestehen, und das noch vor dem nächsten Vollmond - ein Wettrennen mit der Zeit! Und auch die Situation auf dem Hof wird immer angespannter: Die mutige Haushälterin Mercedes spielt ein doppeltes Spiel. Sie versorgt gemeinsam mit dem Arzt die Rebellen in den Bergen, unter denen auch ihr Bruder ist. Aber das geht nicht lange gut ... (arte)

Ein Film, der alles hat, was einst Burton-Filme hatten und heute nicht mehr haben – einen geistigen Inhalt umhüllt von einer fabelhaften visuellen Gestaltung. Ein einzigartiger Fantasyfilm, welcher die Fantasiewelt des Vorstellungsvermögens von einem Mädchen mit dem grausamsten Gesicht der Erwachsenenwelt kombiniert. Zwei starke Filme in einem, die auf ein unerwartetes, poetisches Ende mit einem großen Gedanken hinsteuern. Pans Labyrinth ist eigentlich eine Adaption eines reichhaltigen Fantasy-Romans, bei welcher das Drehbuch perfekt für eine große Leinwand gestaltet wurde. Die Genialität von Guillermo besteht darin, dass er den Film ohne eine Vorlage gedreht hat, nur nach seinem sehr komplexen Drehbuch. Und dass er sich das Ganze selbst ausgedacht hat. Die grausame Dimension des Films, die von Sergi López gleich in den ersten Minuten gezeigt wird, ist brutal, aber es funktioniert perfekt!

Bloody hell! That was harsher than I expected. One word: beauty. I don’t know which of the storylines I liked more, the fantasy or the war one, both are great. 90% PS: I hated Captain Vidal almost as much as Mrs Carmody from The Mist.

Via its distinctive treatment, the unique fairy tale theme is offered to a rather older audience, who will not only enjoy the decadent atmosphere but also the many exquisite details that director Del Toro uses to give his fantasy world a soulfulness and an overall feeling of perfect sophistication. The amazing sets, masks, and the contrast of the civil war with the fantasy world are just a sliding surface. The truth lies beneath the surface, where the viewer's imagination and brain must be engaged. Bravo!

Ein wahrhaft naturalistisch aufgefasstes Drama von der Dämmerung des spanischen Bürgerkrieges, das mit dem Grundriss der benachbarten Welten von Realität und Fantasie (des Überrealen) an das Werk Das Rückgrat des Teufels desselben Regisseurs erinnert. In Anbetracht des Unterschieds zwischen den beiden Welten spaltet sich Pans Labyrinth in zwei verschiedene Ebenen auf - jene des bestialischen Dramas und die Ebene des im Goyastil pikaresken Märchen-Horrorfilm über eine Welt hinter dem Spiegel. Woran es mir im Film wirklich fehlt, ist die Kohärenz und Integrität beider fiktiver Räume. Anhand dieser Verbindung hatte ich mit Ausnahme der Schlussteils den Eindruck einer Art Zwang, Zwietracht, Sinnlosigkeit. Vielleicht habe ich mich zu sehr an Burtons Optik gewöhnt, wo alles seiner Ordnung folgt. Guillermo Del Toro ist insbesondere im Hinblick aufs visuelle und technische Konzept geordnet. Dieses Konzept ist hervorragend und macht aus Pans Labyrinth ein hochwertiges Spektakel in Bezug zur Atmosphäre, Masken, Bühnenbild und nicht zuletzt dem Schauspiel. Schlussendlich trug auch der Höhepunkt des Films zum Schema mit einem klaren Moment der Motivation bei und stumpfte meinen peinlichen Eindruck von Del Toros Drehbuch ein wenig ab. Sofern denn dieser spezielle Genre-Mix nicht in tschechischen Kinos gezeigt wird, sollten sich die Distributoren formal bestätigen lassen, dass bei ihnen nicht alle Tassen im Schrank sind, denn trotz einiger Kritik ist das hier ein klasse Erlebnis und sicherlich das beste Werk in der Karriere des Mexikaners ... Ich siedele dies in der poetischen Nachbarschaft von Tim Burton und teilweise Terry Gilliam an.

The most balanced and the best del Toro movie I’ve seen. And it has the same theme music as in Circus Humberto. A chamber price about war with a big pinch of gloomy, fairytale fantasy. The problem is the length, because especially in the first hour the pace is far too relaxed. On the other hand, it is hard to fault the second half; everything is flawless. It’s a sort of successful concoction containing The Devil’s Backbone and the unmistakable storytelling poetry of Neil Gaiman.

Love that doesn't touch me, cruelty that becomes routine and a fairytale atmosphere that cannot provide the necessary comfort due to its fragmentation. Del Toro took on too big of a bite, which crumbled into two large crumbs. One slightly smaller, sweet yet bland, the other worn out and almost hard. And not tasty at all. Fragments of a fascinating world, successful atmosphere of fairies, Fauna and creatures from Ofelia's tasks, these are aspects that simply had to captivate me. But there remains the second part with the partisans, eternal failures, and the wild stubbornness of Captain Vidal. When the script tries to torment the viewer with "bad events" too much, it starts to bother me. But when every turn hides obstacles, misfortune, or disaster, sympathy for the main characters disappears completely. Compared to Hellboy packed with ideas to bursting, surprisingly constrained and one-sided detour to nowhere.

Faun's Labyrinth meets all the requirements of a quality film - a strong story, the appropriate budget, an experienced director, and a solid cast. It is exactly the kind of fantasy that I like because it doesn't trample on the most cheaply stolen motifs from Tolkien in a thousand ways, but goes its own way and combines a classic fairy tale story with a realistically conceived war drama. It is original, emotional, tense, and artistically elaborate with excellent cinematography, and the director is not afraid of even naturalistic bloody scenes and ventures into the realm of pure horror. Overall impression: 90%. The pinnacle of Guillermo del Toro's work so far, which will be difficult for the director to surpass...

Once upon a time... This unusual fairytale from Guillermo del Toro gave me much more than I expected. Pan’s Labyrinth is full of enthusiasm and love for fantasy, imagination and fairytales. The mysterious “faun-like" atmosphere alternates nicely with real life from the end of the Second World War, without taking away anything from one or the other. The acting performances are excellent and the little Ivan Baquero has my respect. She played difficult scenes amazingly and truly convincingly. The superb makeup shared hugely in conjuring up the almost horror feeling to the movie (especially the um... Pale Man was a work of genius) and I also liked the music which set a great atmosphere for the story.

A fantastic journey to the depths of a small child’s soul. A film without flaws, the more you watch it, the more you realise how perfect it is.

During this film, I felt as if Guillermo del Toro had put me on a merry-go-round. At times I found myself in the middle of a military camp suppressing a handful of rebels, and then suddenly witnessing a fairy tale fantasy full of weird creatures. It's certainly an entertaining, exciting and at times thrilling ride, but the effect visibly falters over time and there are some rusty spots, whether it's the incomprehensible brutality that must have shocked the excited younger audience a great deal, or the slight neglect and relegation of Pan and his tasks at the expense of the war, and they grow in number and my impressions were rather mixed when it was over. In any case, just for the premise and the director’s courage, I round up to ****.

Earthly life is sad and violent, while the world of supernatural beings is magical and pleasant. In this film, however, things are definitely not like that. Yet in the supernatural world, you can at least eventually find justice. In the earthly world, no. Or yes? Just as Ophelia cannot reconcile herself with the (albeit inconspicuous) injustice done to an innocent creature and, as a result, becomes an innocent victim herself, Spain was forced to become a victim of Franco's fascism for four decades. Ophelia is rewarded for it in the fairy tale world. Spain, in the real world, may not seem like it at first glance, but there is still a chance - if the Spaniards were not willing to sacrifice the innocent for their own happiness, the new generation, even if it emerges from the horror of the previous generation, can experience more just and free times.

Del Toro's sense of imagination is incredible. Beautiful music, on one level a wonderful fairy tale story, and overall an experience that is not easy to forget. The bizarre fascination with the ending is just the icing on the cake...
