Vor langer, langer Zeit wurde der russischen Stadt Rostow ein Sohn geboren, der über die Maßen wuchs, erstaunliche Kräfte besaß, aber das Schreiben und Lesen nicht so recht erlernen wollte. Aljoscha hieß er, Aljoscha Popowitsch. Die Kunst des Kämpfens studierte der Knabe umso gewissenhafter, denn Aljoscha wollte ein Held werden. Und es sollte nicht lange dauern, bis er seine Kräfte unter Beweis stellen konnte … Auf Aljoscha wartet eine Reise voller Gefahren und Abenteuer. Denn er bekommt die Aufgabe, den Drachensohn Tugarin zu finden und zu besiegen, um das gestohlene Gold seiner Landsleute zurückzuholen. Ob ihm dabei das sprechende Pferd Julius eine rechte Hilfe ist, bleibt abzuwarten. Der skurrile Klepper hat nämlich mehr Angst als Vaterlandsliebe. Großmäuligkeit und eine gewisse Unterschätzung seiner heldenhaften Fähigkeiten kommen hinzu. (Verleiher-Text)

Oh, those heroic Russians! Without them, Mother Russia would not have been able to resist the invasion of the Tatars and other raiders. The only problem is that poor hero Alesha manages to break and ruin more than a horde of bandits. What Lucky Luke: Ballad of the Daltons means for westerns in animated form, Alesha means for Russian legends in animated form. It is a pure genre parody that uses traditional Russian legends to entertain the whole family. Whoever wants can debate whether Alesha's horse is an imitation of Shrek's donkey, but if we had to address the same problem in other genres, we might as well write off 90% of film productions. For me, this film also scores points with its visual processing, which does its own thing and doesn't try to copy Walt Disney's dominant style. To me, this film is a pleasant revival of contemporary animated creations with Eastern European elements combined with plenty of gags. Overall impression: 90%.
