At night and on weekends, four men in a suburban garage have built a cottage industry of error-checking devices. But, they know that there is something more. There is some idea, some mechanism, some accidental side effect that is standing between them and a pure leap of innovation. And so, through trial and error they are building the device that is missing most. However, two of these men find the device and immediately realize that it is too valuable to market. The limit of their trust in each other is strained when they are faced with the question, "If you always want what you can't have, what do you want when you can have anything?" (Verleiher-Text)

I understand that the filmmakers are begging for an attentive viewer, but that still doesn't change the fact that the direction is far behind the script. It’s great for a low-cost film, but a little more pro-audience attitude wouldn't hurt. 3 ½.

A decent low-budget time-travel flick. Carruth offers an irresistible thought – what if we manage to put together a time machine in the garage – in para-documentary style. Technical explanatory passages, debates about the budget, the first experiment, trying to get rich. Everything seems realistic and focuses on the details. No trick shots; just old-school filmmaking. The ending is very meticulous and even concise, making it even more disturbing.

Es hat mich überrascht, wie lange der Film in mir nachgewirkt hat, obwohl ich mich in etwa zwei Dritteln nicht mehr orientieren konnte, was darin passierte. Nach der Konsultation mehrerer Fan-Websites muss ich jedoch zugeben, dass es Sinn ergibt, obwohl es meiner Meinung nach nicht vollständig von allen Lapsen bezüglich der zeitlichen Paradoxa befreit werden konnte. Ich verbeuge mich vor Shane Carruth dafür, dass er überhaupt ein solches Drehbuch erstellen konnte (man erkennt, dass er ursprünglich ein Techniker und Mathematiker ist), und ich empfehle den Film als einen der bemerkenswertesten und geistig anregendsten Beiträge zum Genre der Zeitreisefilme, der zudem als günstiges unabhängiges Debüt sowohl Regie geführt als auch gut gespielt wurde. Andererseits verstehe ich vollkommen, warum die bewusst auslassende, wenig erklärende und ausschließlich andeutende erzählerische Struktur vielen Menschen nicht zusagt.

Definitely, it is a movie that belongs among the most interesting sci-fi films that have been made in the previous decade. Both in terms of the story and the form. Unfortunately, I think it will not have the right effect on a lot of viewers. It happened to me as well, and I simply did not enjoy the movie, but rather endured it. The ideas are there, but the execution is hard to digest.
