Charlie und die Schokoladenfabrik

Tim Burton ignores the darkness and goes far beyond the kitsch of opulent color to literally create a breathtaking world made from the sweetest ingredients. He does a great job with the exaggeration, and such an overly pathetic story about family cohesion is in fact not awkward, but rather endearing. Johnny Depp's eccentric acting is just as entertaining as the little Oompa-Loompas, whose songs may be a bit self-indulgent, but what isn't in this film? Burton exaggerated everything so beautifully that I ate it up completely. And I very much enjoyed it. (14.04.2006)

Tim Burtons Filme zu sehen bedeutet für mich, ein Haus in einer anderen Welt zu besuchen. Jedes von ihnen ist wie ein gemütliches Haus mit einem Kamin und einer Familie von archetypischen Motiven, Charakteren und Praktiken, die Burtons charakteristische Poetik "ausmachen". Karlik ist ein Werk, das völlig in die präzise Visualität und typische Plastizität der Fantasiewelt des bizarren Schokoladenzauberers Willy Wonka eingetaucht ist. Die unglaubliche Explosion von Farben und Klängen wird mit absoluter Bravour gemeistert, und abgesehen von der dynamischen Fahrt auf dem Schokoladenfluss gibt es wie immer Raum für die Darstellung der Charaktere. Zwar ist die mittlere Passage vielleicht ein wenig zu sehr auf das Bild fixiert, aber egal - das Feuerwerk an Erfindungen und die großartigen Melodien von Danny Elfmann sind so fesselnd, dass man es verzeiht. Der Höhepunkt ist zweifellos ein parodistisches Zitat von Kubricks 2001: Odyssee im Weltraum, aber auch die seltsame Spannung zwischen dem freundlichen märchenhaften Humor und dem mutmaßlichen Rand des schwarzen Humors, ohne den man sich Tim kaum mehr vorstellen kann... Aber Karlík kommt doch ungewöhnlich harmonisch daher, und alle vermeintlich scharfen Kanten werden durch ein schönes Finale überspielt. Das Highlight in Burtons Delikatessenladen ist eindeutig Johnny Depp, dessen Wonka irgendwo zwischen der Zerbrechlichkeit von Ichabod Crane (Sleepy Hollow) und der Exzentrik von Captain Jack Sparrow balanciert. Sein Duett mit Freddie Highmore kommt wie in Wenn Träume fliegen lernen sehr gut zur Geltung, obwohl der Raum viel kleiner ist. Der Zwerg und die Schokoladenfabrik mag inhaltlich nicht so aufregend sein, aber seine Optik, sein Humor, sein Charme und seine Ausstrahlung machen ihn zu einem weiteren Juwel aus der Werkstatt des kauzigen Tim. The Burton - Elfman - Depp trio make this picture an original, typically Burton-like, screwy movie. It’s a family movie where mainly the adults in the audience do all the laughing, because Tim approached it.. Simply in his own way. One crazy idea follows another; total stylization; Depp’s Willy Wonka is somewhere between Michael Jackson and Marylin Manson and it is all accompanied by an absolutely madcap soundtrack by Danny Elfman. There is not much of a story; it’s more like a road movie traveling through this fairytale factory, with the center of attention in the form of Depp, but also Christopher Lee is certainly worth mentioning too. The rest of the cast are given no room at all, which is refreshing because the children’s roles are played nicely and aren’t annoying. The whole thing is “sweetened" by being a kind of ingenious parody on A Space Odyssey. ♫ OST score: 4/5 (19.08.2005)

Where all sweet wishes come true, where a group of little creatures sings mocking songs about your failed candy bars, where the word "family" is a small charm... There awaits a magically mysterious master of sweets who will find you strange no matter how hard you try. But the visit is worth it. It's magical!!! And it's also wonderfully colorful, sweet, and magical. The atmosphere is almost intoxicating and also a little weird, which I love. It's really a wonder to watch. Far beyond the imagination of all of us put together. Tim Burton is an unbelievable maniac!! And I love it so much. (13.05.2011)

Tim Burton made me very happy this time. The magic of the film lies solely in the stylisation and arrangement of each scene, and it doesn’t deserve to be part of the elite just because it’s divinely scored and looks beautiful, but because of its unadulterated joy of storytelling and visual experimentation simply cannot be resisted. Who else could build such a simple and sentimental story in such an engaging and creative way? Maybe only Jára Cimrman. 80% (05.07.2012)

This is a lovely, funny, and imaginative movie that I really enjoyed, and although I am not familiar with the book, I think it sticks to the book quite well and where it did deviate, it did so in a witty, original, and playful way. The actors are excellent – both the adults (Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, in particular, gives a terrific performance) and the child actors. The child actors portray the little bastards superbly, but best of all are AnnaSophia Robb and Jordan Fry; of the "good" ones there is only one – Charlie – played, of course, by Freddie Highmore. The soundtrack (as with most of Tim's movies) is, as always, excellent, the sets are a little garish and over the top, however, that is just something that simply belongs to Tim’s world, and only adds to the movie’s uniqueness. This is therefore a great movie that has left me impressed for a long time after seeing it. (25.07.2008)

Burtons Version von Charlie und die Schokoladenfabrik (Film aus dem Jahr 1971, ich schäme mich zuzugeben, dass ich ihn noch nicht gesehen habe) ist wahrscheinlich die erfolgreichste Verfilmung von Roald Dahls Werk. Burtons Film strotzt wie üblich vor großartigem (wenn auch sehr digitalem) Bildmaterial und schönen Kulissen (ob es nun die "Eingeweide" einer Fabrik oder Charlies unscheinbare Hütte war). Die treibende Kraft der Geschichte ist Johnny Depp, der in die Rolle des skurrilen Kauzes passt und es schafft, den albernen Schokoladenladenfabrikbesitzer perfekt zu spielen. Ich konnte mich nie für Freddie Highmore begeistern, und das hat sich auch nach dem x-ten Mal Ansehen nicht geändert. Die anderen Schauspieler waren durchweg gut für ihre Rollen geeignet, auch wenn sie nicht so viel Platz hatten - am meisten beeindruckt haben mich Christopher Lee und das verschiedene Quartett der Großeltern. Diejenigen, die Burtons Stil nicht mögen, werden wahrscheinlich bei Charlie leiden, aber ich mochte diesen süßen Trip zwischen den singenden Umpa-Lumpas, cleveren Eichhörnchen und mit einer Peitsche aufgeschäumter Schlagsahne. Hier vermischen sich eindeutig Dahls Genie als Macher und uferlose Fantasie, die in Kombination mit einem visuellen Festschmaus in einer Interpretation von Tim Burton und der Schauspielkunst von Johnny Depp einen wunderschönen Filmcocktail schaffen, der die Seele streichelt und Groß und Klein erfreut. Wie es bei Dahls Geschichten üblich ist, haben sie immer einen starken moralischen und ethischen Wert und bieten Kindern wertvolle Lehren bzw. auch zahlreichen Erwachsenen... (29.12.2019)

A breathtaking visual experience. The atmosphere of the entire film is pleasantly "sweet" and the moral messages are not surprisingly intrusive; on the contrary, they need not be restricted to the kids. :) For Burton, for Depp, for Elfman, for the feast for the eyes, and for some really hilarious jokes, 5 stars.
