Wie aus dem Nichts taucht auf dem New Yorker Hauptbahnhof ein mysteriöser Mann mit Sonnenbrille auf, der sich Prot nennt und behauptet, vom fernen Planeten K-Pax zu stammen. Prompt landet er in einer psychiatrischen Klinik. Aber selbst hohe Dosen Psychopharmaka richten bei ihm nichts aus, was seinen Therapeuten Dr. Mark Powell stutzig werden lässt. Seltsam ist es ebenfalls, dass der Mann offensichtlich in der Lage ist, UV-Licht zu sehen. Schon bald ist der Psychiater außerdem fasziniert von der charismatischen Persönlichkeit seines neuen Patienten, und ihn verblüffen die völlig schlüssigen Angaben, die Prot über seinen Heimatplaneten macht. Als er sogar eine Gruppe von Astrophysikern mit seinem Wissen von bislang unveröffentlichten Fakten über "sein Planetensystem" verblüfft, kommen Dr. Powell ernsthafte Zweifel an seinem eigenen festgefahrenen Weltbild. Hinzu kommt, dass Prot mit seinen unkonventionellen Einsichten und seinem freundlichen Auftreten sämtliche Mitpatienten aus ihrem Wahn reißt und zu einer Art Leitfigur für sie wird. Kommt der seltsame, weise Mann etwa wirklich von einem anderen Planeten? Oder leidet er doch an einer Psychose, ausgelöst durch ein traumatisches Erlebnis? (Verleiher-Text)

Ausgezeichnete Schauspieler*innen, eine sensible Regie. Aber was ist mit dem Drehbuch? K-Pax - Alles ist möglich entwickelt sich ungefähr ab der Mitte (die erste Hypnose) in eine ganz andere Richtung, als er am Anfang wollte, und sein Ende ist der Ausgang eines Themas, das im Film nie angefangen hat! Ganz zu schweigen davon, dass die Hoffnung aus dem vielversprechenden Anfang und der ganzen ersten Hälfte im schwarzen Loch zwischen Merkur und Pluto verschwinden.

Ein wunderschöner und unvergesslicher Film. Vom Anfang bis zum Ende hat er mir keine Möglichkeit gegeben, Luft zu holen. Und obwohl ich die ganze Zeit neugierig war, ob Prot wirklich ein außerirdisches Wesen ist, war es mir am Ende eigentlich völlig egal. Darum ging es doch überhaupt nicht. Brillante Schauspielleistungen, Shearmurs herrliche Musik und eine Kamera voller Licht. Sensationell.

An interesting conversational drama that manages to entertain despite the absence of any significant plot. Great performances, beautiful cinematography, the script is a bit weaker in the last act, but overall, this is a nice film. The ending feels pretty ambiguous, so you can choose your own interpretation. I’m satisfied with it, four stars.

A magnificent, slow-paced and in the purest way soothing film that, upon further viewings, gains a stamp of genius in my eyes. Spacey demonstrates that even the most challenging acting challenge is not insurmountable for him, and Bridges perfectly accentuates his civilian role. Criticisms towards the screenplay are irrelevant; if Prot only wandered around the mental institution, treated patients, and awed with his knowledge of the universe, it would quickly lose the magic that makes these scenes unforgettable. It is precisely the dramatic storyline, unfolding in the second half, that gives K-PAX an aura of a meticulously crafted film until the very last scene.

A smart and very enjoyable film thanks to the absence of clichés and cynicism. Although the story is built mostly on dialogues, it kept me in suspense the whole time I was waiting for the final resolution. The viewer will appreciate the ornate dialogue, and some scenes, such as the one in the planetarium, are sure to give you chills. The impeccable impression of the film is enhanced by the great cinematography, music and, of course, Spacey's one-man-show, about which there is no point in going into more detail.
