Bess ist eine junge, naive Frau, die ihr ganzes Leben in einem kleinen Dorf an der Nordküste Schottlands verbracht hat. Jan arbeitet auf einer Bohrinsel und ist schon viel in der Welt herumgekommen. Anfang der siebziger Jahre verlieben sich die beiden ineinander, und trotz lokaler Widerstände heiraten sie. Als Jan auf die Bohrinsel zurückgeht, beginnt Bess, die Tage bis zu seiner Heimkehr zu zählen. Daß ihr Liebesbund im Himmel geschlossen wurde, davon ist sie ebenso überzeugt wie von ihrer Fähigkeit, mit Gott zu kommunizieren. Als Jan nach einem Unfall gelähmt und ans Bett gefesselt ist, überredet er Bess dazu, sich einen Liebhaber zu nehmen und ihm von ihren sexuellen Erlebnissen zu erzählen. (polyfilm)

Lars von Trier pushes the envelope again, but unlike Dancer in the Dark, there is a reason for it and it is not an end in itself. Breaking the Waves is a whirlwind of emotions that often sends chills down the spine. And Emily Watson’s performance is perfection itself.

Your typical Trier’s unpleasant cocktail of emotions. Breaking the Waves is such a relentless valley of tears that the viewer never has a chance to calm down; the misery only escalates. Emily Watson’s performance is breathtaking. And yet, I don’t think it’s enough for a full count, why? The answer is simple: because of Dogville, a film without a single weak moment that was a lot more crushing. This one is the light version of Lars’s best.

Natürlich ist der Kerl ein furchtbarer emotionaler Erpresser, aber das kann ich zum hundertsten Mal logisch ableiten, nachdem ich den Film gesehen habe, aber es lässt sich nicht leugnen, dass mich diese Geschichte über eine Frau, die sich für den Mann, den sie liebt, völlig aufopfert, umgehauen hat. Trier versteht es, die Grenzen zwischen Handlung/Kamera/Zuschauer zu überwinden und eine explosive Kombination aus Handlung und Zuschauer zu schaffen. Die Authentizität der Geschichte wird durch die "schnörkellosen" Handkameraaufnahmen und die absolut glaubwürdigen Darbietungen von Skarsgård und Watson verstärkt. Die Geschichte hat von Anfang an etwas Fatales an sich, ein Vorzeichen einer Tragödie... Trier versteht es, diese "Vorahnungen" zu schaffen... Das Ergebnis ist reiner Gefühlsterror, so schrecklich, dass sich ein Zuschauer im Kino übergeben musste. Keine Hässlichkeit, nur lange Minuten emotionaler Spannung mit einem fast märchenhaften Ende, aber es tröstet die angekratzte Seele nicht. Wo die Realität aufhört und der Film anfängt, ist beim Betrachten von Breaking the Waves ein fast unlösbares Rätsel. Ich wurde so sehr hineingezogen, dass meine Gefühle nicht künstlich waren. Ich war verwirrt und hingerissen... Trier, du verdammtes Tier!!!

Viele Jahre lang habe ich Breaking the Waves als einen Film gesehen, für den man reifen muss, einen Superfilm, der nicht für jeden geeignet ist. Letztendlich ist es aber nur ein Film für den anspruchsvollen Zuschauer, aber keineswegs für einen Snob oder einen Heuchler. Nun also alle Proto-Eindrücke beiseite, es ist nur ein Film, er wird dich nicht tot beißen - und natürlich ist von Trier nur der Autor.

A total, but I mean total emotional inferno. You just don't see anything more vicious than this (except with another Trier). How this freaks pulls this off with these actors I really don't understand. He must be putting something in their coffee. What Emily Watson in particular created is a character worthy of a horror movie. Of course, then the very end comes and I don't know what flew onto my monitor. Trier couldn't have been serious. I think he must have made a bet with someone -)

I don't have Lars von Trier among my favorite creators, but I have to admit that he knows how to tell powerful stories and how to extract truly dark emotions from both actors and viewers. It seems to me that the film contains too many unnecessary minutes for what it actually wants to say, but it is true that for another movie, I would criticize the duration more. It is an experience that will make you think.

Breaking the Waves is really a very deep and powerful story that depicts love and a love relationship from a slightly different perspective. An emotionally unforgiving epic about how hard it is (in the case of the main character, no doubt even harder than for "normal" people) to find love, but that is nothing compared to keeping love and being a dutiful wife at all costs. Her desperate efforts eventually lead Bess to the fringes of a hypocritical and would-be orderly society, to finally do "what is expected of her"...
