Auf der Farm von Joe Starrett, der zu Siedlern gehört, die sich auf Land nieder gelassen haben, das Viehzüchter Rufus Stryker beansprucht, taucht der wie ein Revolverheld gekleidete Shane auf und wird eingestellt. Shane freundet sich mit Joes achtjährigem Sohn Joey an. In der Stadt vermeidet Shane bei einem Streit das Duell und gilt zu Joeys Bedauern als Feigling. Als Stryker den Killer Slick Wilson engagiert, der einen Siedler tötet und Starrett zu sich zitiert, geht Shane an seiner Stelle und erschießt Wilson. Shane reitet tödlich verletzt aus dem Tal.
