Biografie
Born in 1974, Lee Sang-il studied at the Japan Institute of the Moving Image. His graduation project and directorial debut, the short film Chong (1999) dominated four categories at the Pia Festival in 2000. In 2004 he directed his first feature: 69. His next film, Hula Girls (2006) swept the board at the Japanese film awards, including Best Film, and was selected to represent Japan at the Academy Awards. Villain was acclaimed both in Japan and abroad, winning 5 Japanese Academy awards and Best Actress at the Montreal International Festival.
