Two traveling companions, George and Edna, come across a small town infested with the "living dead" that are satisfying their cannibalistic hunger on anyone they come across. Discovering that an agricultural machine using radiation waves is at the root of all the havoc, George and Edna fight for survival and their innocence as they are pursued by a relentless detective who is convinced they are responsible for the ghoulish acts of violence plaguing the countryside. All this leads to a gruesome showdown at the Manchester Morgue - an ending that knots a horrifying twist in the lives of all involved! (Anchor Bay Films)

The first half is unbearably slow and empty, but the second half (starting at the crypt scene) is excellent. I’m really surprised that I didn’t fall asleep during that protracted introduction, and I’m very happy for that. In a time when we are used to zombie apocalypses with hordes of undead, this film is a great example that only a couple of them can be enough.

Eine frostige Vorstellung, die bereits zum goldenen Fundus des Horrors gehört, ist jedoch immer noch meilenweit von klassischen Romer oder Fulci entfernt. Dieser Film mit dem Zombie-Thema geht seinen eigenen Weg, aber umso beeindruckender. Seine erste Hälfte beinhaltet zwar eine Detektivgeschichte, aber die allmähliche Aufklärung der Ursache des radioaktiven Insektenvernichters ist definitiv nicht uninteressant, ebenso wie die Suche nach dem scheinbar toten Vagabunden Gurthie. Die entfremdete Umgebung des englischen Landes und die von verstörenden Geräuschen erfüllte Musik tun ihr Übriges. Nach dem Entdecken der dunklen Krypta kommt jedoch das, was der Zuschauer verlangt: Spannung, Angst und Gore. Es stört überhaupt nicht, dass die Massenszenen von herumspazierenden Zombies durch ein paar wenige Tote ersetzt werden. Fantastisch.
