Im kalifornischen Provinzstädtchen Santa Mira steht Dr. Miles Bennell vor einem Rätsel. Viele seiner Patienten, die er seit Jahren als lebenslustige, engagierte Mitmenschen erlebt hat, verwandeln sich scheinbar über Nacht in apathische, distanzierte Gestalten. Als mehr und mehr Einwohner von dem Phänomen befallen werden, beginnt Bennell, Nachforschungen anzustellen.
