When Mike (Lee Montgomery) and Josh (Wings Hauser), a pair of northern-bred brothers, take a trip to a backwoods Georgian town, one of them ends up missing and the other is forced to begin a frantic search for his missing sibling with the aid of Sheriff Will Stewart (Bo Hopkins) and rookie sleuth Holly (Jody Medford). Die ersten Minuten lassen keinen Zweifel daran, dass Mutant vor allem auf die atmosphärische Note setzt. Ein einsames Haus, dichter Nebel, der sich mitten in der stillen Nacht ausbreitet, und Richard Band's Musik (Re-animator, Puppetmaster, From Beyond) sind eine teuflische Kombination, um den Film zu beginnen. Im Verlauf des Films schwankt er zwar ein paar Mal, aber die Spannung bleibt bis zum schluss erhalten. Auch wenn der Plot es nahelegt, müssen wir dieses Mal auf blutige Szenen verzichten. Aber das macht nichts, einige der Masken sind großartig (besonders in den aufgeblähten Momenten) und die Nachtszenen verdienen sicherlich unsere Aufmerksamkeit. Sogar ein Schurke bekommt sein Fett weg. Von dem Regisseur meines Lieblingsfilms Kingdom of the Spiders ist dies wieder ein gelungener Beitrag. Es fehlte nicht viel und ich hätte ihm einen extra Stern gegeben.

The American movie Mutant is a fine example of a B-movie. There is plenty of suspense, plus it is an action-packed horror movie unafraid of bordering on trash or clichés. However, it does not matter at all because it is so fun to watch, mainly because Mutant has a decent plot and not just a parade of filth, although when it comes down to it, in terms of practical effects Mutant is very good. I think this is a great movie and well worth watching.
