Die Geschwister Barbara und Johnny statten ihrem verstorbenen Vater einen Besuch auf dem Friedhof in Pittsburgh ab. Plötzlich kommt ihnen aus der Dunkelheit die Furcht erregende Gestalt eines Untoten entgegen und greift die beiden an. Johnny kommt ums Leben, doch Barbara kann fliehen. Sie sucht Zuflucht in einem einsamen Landhaus, wo wenig später Ben auftaucht, der ebenfalls vor einer Gruppe Zombies geflohen ist. Er vernagelt die Fenster und Türen des Hauses, das nach und nach von einer ganzen Horde Untoter umstellt wird. Diese, so melden die Fernsehnachrichten, treiben in der ganzen Gegend ihr Unwesen.
