Obi-Wan Kenobi

Poor Ewan, this is a waste of his immense charisma and this weak tea doesn't deserve it at all. I really wanted to like it, if only because of him, but alas. Only a few nostalgic moments work in the weak script (especially in the first part), the direction is pathetic, sometimes it’s really painful to watch, and there are moments when it seemed like a parody and others that had the atmosphere of the TV fairy tales made by the commies, where the production poured a lot of money into mediocre effects and expensive sets. Deborah Chow may be confident in relationship dramas, but she lacks the chops to build the legacy of a famous franchise. Mickey has messed up everything he has touched in Star Wars, except for the narratively courageous The Last Jedi and Rogue One, which were brilliant craftsmanship and had the balls to take the famous saga in a different direction. Damit habe ich meinen Frieden gemacht. Die Regie ist völlig unausgewogen (die Gegenüberstellung der Eröffnungsszene im Jedi-Tempel und der völlig parodistischen Verfolgungsjagd zwischen der Räuber und Leia ist unerbittlich), das Drehbuch ist ein einziges Durcheinander, in dem sich die Figuren treffen und wieder verschwinden, als wären sie mitten in etwas ganz Wichtigem. Der Film leidet unter dem SW-Disney-Syndrom - die Grenzen sind furchtbar eng gesteckt, weil wir wissen, worauf er hinausläuft, und es wird noch weiter eingeschränkt, indem es völlig unnötigerweise bekannte Figuren in eine zentrale Rolle hineinzieht. Aber als eine Ansammlung hübscher Set Pieces, der düsteren Atmosphäre der Inquisition und eines grimmigen Ewans, der Emotionen aus einem Haufen getrockneten Kots ziehen konnte, funktioniert es einfach irgendwie. Abgesehen davon, dass selbst die beste neue Figur, die besessene Dritte Schwester, am Ende dramaturgisch wenig Sinn ergibt und das erwartete Duell zwischen Ben und "du weißt schon wer" mit dem vorzeitigen Abgang eines Teams in die Umkleidekabine endet, ist es eigentlich ein recht unterhaltsamer und atmosphärischer One-Shot aus einer Welt, die allmählich an das Braunkohlebecken von Most erinnert. Nur könnten sich die Produzenten vielleicht mal mit der Tatsache abgefunden haben, dass eine Leia, die gerademal aufgehört hat einzunässen, und ein digital bearbeiteter Boomer Anakin nicht das sind, was SW-Fans wollen. At the beginning, Obi is a bit of a jerk, but in the last episode he is the good old Wan Kenobi we all know and love. It’s written pretty poorly and Chow’s directing is a bit lackadaisical, the action is pretty weak, with a couple of exceptions, some scenes don’t make any sense and some are there just for effect. And again we get mentor variations where a surrogate father cares for a child, saves it, loses it again, then saves it again.  Of course, it’s great that we get to know a bit more about Leia, but it’s just fan service, especially since we know that in fact there is no real danger, because we know she survives at least until A New Hope. The existence of a third sister character is interesting to know, but Moses Ingram’s acting is rather bland. Rupert Friend’s makeup is more on the dumb side, rather than being horrifying. Criminal underuse of John Williams’ original score. But when Christensen and McGregor are exchanging views in the last episode, at last it has a shout. I think they should have made this a movie, rather than a half-baked miniseries. (22.06.2022)

In der Animationsserie Star Wars Rebels, die vor allem für das jüngere Publikum bestimmt ist, gibt es eine Szene, in welcher Ben Kenobi mit graumeliertem Haar, der zu dem Zeitpunkt schon auf Tatooine lebt und von weitem auf den kleinen Luke aufpasst, zum letztem Mal mit Darth Maul kämpft. Es ist kein langer Kampf, er ist aber ausgezeichnet, spannend und schicksalhaft. Und es geht nicht nur um den Kampf selbst, wichtig ist auch der Dialog, der schön und traurig zugleich ist… Schauen Sie sich das an. Diese Szene ist nur knapp vier Minuten lang, sie ist aber unerwartet reif und besser als der Großteil der langersehnten Serie Obi-Wan Kenobi. Was nützt es, dass Evan McGregor zu der ikonischen Rolle mit Begeisterung zurückgekehrt ist und wirklich gut spielen wollte, wenn es so wirkt, dass er der Einzige war, der sich angestrengt hat. Die Regie ist völlig uninteressant und stellt die entfernte Galaxie manchmal amateurhaft und sogar parodistisch dar (mit Andor kann man es überhaupt nicht vergleichen). Das schlecht durchdachte Drehbuch ist die Hölle. Ich habe den Eindruck, dass niemand über die Verbindung zwischen Obi-Wan Kenobi und dem Film Krieg der Sterne nachgedacht hat. Dasselbe gilt für die vielen logischen Ungereimtheiten, die durch das Engagement der kleinen Prinzessin Leia entstanden sind. Leider. (03.01.2023)

Disney can add another notch to its belt.  The end of Episode III was probably the biggest story treasure that Lucas left behind. There was huge potential, but the suits at Disney, who still have no idea what to do with the Star Wars brand, completely buried it. A tired-ass, boring story. The storytelling is just as pathetic as the technical aspect (at times resembling some insanely low-cost amateur film). There’s zero suspense, heaven forbid a hint of fate. I’m not exaggerating. Nothing about it works, except for the flashbacks to the previous trilogy. Congratulations Disney, keep it up. (27.06.2022)
