A romantic Christmas comedy with an excellent cast and the beautiful scenery of the snowy High Tatras. A group of friends go to their traditional New Year’s skiing trip. On their holidays, sparks start flying in unexpected directions, one very old love comes back to life, and a live bear enters the story as well. Eine Variante einer romantischen Winterkomödie, ein Reiseführer der Slowakei und ungarische Brüder. Die Karten sind so verteilt, dass jede Altersgruppe ihre eigene Geschichte hat, so dass theoretisch jeder, vom Teenager bis zum Senior, etwas für sich findet. Klischee auf Klischee, Kitsch auf Kitsch. Nach der Serie Milenky wollte ich das Hauptquartett noch einmal in einem gemeinsamen Projekt sehen, und das war das Einzige, was es wert war. Ansonsten handelt es sich um wunderschöne Bilder wie aus dem Buch "List paní a dívek". Pauhofova glänzt in den Armen des Millionärs inkognito Koleník wie in alten Zeiten.

Ein gelungener Weihnachtsfilm zum Ausspannen, in den man auch Ende Januar ins Kino gehen kann, wenn das angekündigte Frühlingswetter immer noch nicht eingetreten ist. Ja, es gibt dort reichlich Klischees, misslungene und notorisch bekannte Szenen, doch einige meiner Lieblingsschauspieler und -schauspielerinnen, das Kempinski und die angenehme Atmosphäre machen alles wieder wett. Für mich sehr gut.

I actually didn't find it that bad, then I saw the rating here and the reviews. Sure, it can't aspire to be movie of the year, but it's not even close to being the worst. It's actually sort of an attempt at an American romantic comedy, which we just don't get much of here in Central Europe. It’s a completely mediocre attempt, but perfectly watchable. Sure, it's all abbreviated, shallow (too many characters, too many stories played out, the relationships fail to have any depth afterwards), and everything has to have a happy ending (or a film with no message), but it's a romantic comedy anyway and it's good to watch while doing the ironing. The 52% it's got right now is perfectly adequate.

If you switch off your brain and ignore the downright unlikeable characters, Happy New Year is a fairly unpretentious Christmas flick with lots of familiar faces, nice natural locations, more than one funny moment (the sclerotic father led the way in this one) and a surprisingly decent soundtrack.

The story wasn't worth much and I wasn’t impressed by the performances either (despite the relatively good cast). It was melodramatic as usual (but that’s what you expect of Christmas movies). Most of the dialogues were unbearable and the terribly written Bartoška-Vášáryová plotline was like a pathetic soap opera. But among all that misery, there were a few moments when I had a decent laugh, so I feel like I can justify the one star.
