Doom Patrol

During the first few episodes I told myself that this might be the most likeable “superhero” group from Detective Comics. I’ve put superheroes in quotation marks on purpose because it seemed to me as if they were rather a bunch of idiots who have no idea what to do with their newly acquired abilities. The best thing about it was Brendan Fraser, who I really liked seeing after such a long time and I grew fond of him immediately. And that happened despite his character being portrayed as a rather strange in the beginning. That is not to say the others weren’t good; they were, and they made a pretty good bunch who were tearing each other into bits with their lines. However, over time their demons started to show, probably to create the reason to watch the first season to the end. But due to this, the series started to fall into mediocrity. There weren’t that many good ideas appearing anymore, the enemy, more often than not, wasn’t really there, and the whole thing was very incoherent. For a while, I felt that the screenwriters thought that they could do whatever they wanted with the DC Patrol teams’ world, and so they did. Sometimes it was such a crazy screenwriting trip as if the whole world had no limits at all and anything could happen there. (05.07.2019)

Nun, die Serie Titans hat mich nicht interessiert, diese habe ich nach langem Zögern ausprobiert, und ich habe kein gutes Gefühl bei der Kombination dieser beiden Ideen. Als eigenständige Sache ist Doom Patrol jedoch reichlich bizarr. Es hat etwas von Frankenstein und Hollywood der 1950er Jahre, also ist es mir nicht so fremd. (20.10.2019)

Ich habe eine Comic-Parodie erwartet, aber etwas ganz anderes bekommen. Eine Serie über eine sehr bizarre Gruppe von "Super“helden und Super"helden“, für die sowohl die Entwicklung der Figuren als auch die totale Verwirrung der Zuschauer*innen wichtig ist… Und beides gelingt ihr. Ich war ungefähr bei der zehnten Folge und erst da konnte ich ein bisschen erahnen, auf was die Geschichte hinausläuft, was als Nächstes passiert, wer die Figuren in Wirklichkeit sind… Man kann es schwer beschreiben. Eine ähnliche Situation habe ich bei der Serie Watchmen erlebt. Dort hatte ich aber wenigstens den Vorteil, dass ich den Comic kenne und ein bisschen Bescheid wusste. Bei Doom Patrol konnte absolut alles passieren und das war auch ziemlich oft der Fall. Und ich habe mich prächtig amüsiert. (24.06.2020)
