College-Liebe Ashleigh (Elle Fanning) plant Gatsby (Timothée Chalamet) ein romantisches Wochenende in New York. Ashleigh soll für die College-Zeitung den berühmten Regisseur Roland Pollard (Liev Schreiber) interviewen, in der verbleibenden Zeit möchte Gatsby ihr seine Stadt zeigen – und das ist vor allem das alte New York mit Klassikern wie der Bemelmans Bar und einer Kutschfahrt durch den Central Park. Doch Ashleigh wird von Roland Pollard nach dem Interview zu einem Screening seines neuesten Films eingeladen. Während sie mit ihm, seinem Drehbuchautor Ted Davidoff (Jude Law) und dem gefeierten Filmstar Francisco Vega (Diego Luna) von einer unerwarteten Situation in die nächste schlittert, muss sie Gatsby immer wieder vertrösten. Auf sich allein gestellt lässt dieser sich im Regen durch die Straßen New Yorks treiben. Und trifft dabei nicht nur auf Chan (Selena Gomez), die schlagfertige jüngere Schwester seiner Ex-Freundin, er hat auch ein Gespräch mit seiner Mutter (Cherry Jones), das für ihn alles verändert. So ist am Ende eines regnerischen Tages für beide, Gatsby und Ashleigh, nichts mehr so, wie sie es zuvor erwartet hatten… (polyfilm)

Woody Allen kann es nach wie vor gut, das ist klar. Die Dialoge werden in seinem Kopf aus dem nichts geboren und sie machen auch Sinn. Zudem kann er sich ein Haufen von sehr guten Schauspielern organisieren, die hier angeberisch zeigen wollen, was sie können. Zum Beispiel Elle Fanning, die hier ein dummes Mädchen spielt. Das Ganze wirkt aber hoch künstlerisch und wie aus einer anderen Welt. Mein Kopf wurde kurzzeitig verdreht, aber nach ein paar Wochen, wusste ich nichts mehr davon.

Not an over-produced self-indulgent coloring book, but instead the best Woody Allen film since Midnight in Paris. Timothée Chalamet's versatile talent fits the rainy streets of New York to a tee, and perhaps it is exactly that light-hearted posing in art galleries, parties, filmmakers, and reminiscing about decades-old art that is so accurately and pleasantly reflected on his melancholic face. I can't deny that the same jokes are made about the same topics for the umpteenth time, as are the relationship complications, but when the result is such a well-crafted introspective romantic comedy, I will gladly give it a go for the fifty-first time.

Who would have thought that just A Rainy Day in New York would be the Allen's movie that gets the ax? I don't want to comment on that case, but I'm glad that the film itself is still a classic Allen from recent years, formally and stylistically fitting in among all those proven pieces that Allen has created since 2000. Nothing is missing, everything is here - traditional sophisticated work with music, love for New York, beautifully chatty characters, intertwined relationships, interesting life perspectives. One girl is blonde, the other is a brunette. He is young and unspoiled and has a fascinating mother. Unexpected things happen behind the scenes. And in New York it keeps raining and raining... Beautiful and intoxicating. As always.

New York in a romantic vibe, milked to the max. Allen is a little weaker this time and too laconic in story creation, but typically lively and topical in dialogue, and some of the scenes are full of life's truths and paradoxes. By far the most interesting are the characters who appear on the scene only briefly but have an absolutely crucial impact on the development of the story (Diego Luna, Kelly Rohrbach). Woody doesn't pull as hard on the reins this time as in his other films, but it's still light and fun fare for a Saturday afternoon.

Wenn du es nicht besser kannst, reicht dir ein normales Leben. Ein nächster schöner Film von Woody Allen. Es war mir völlig egal, an wie viele andere schöne Filme von Woody Allen er mich erinnert hat. Anderthalb Stunden habe ich seine Leichtigkeit und die tollen Schauspielleistungen genossen (vor allem die berauschte und niedliche Elle Fanning mit dem Schluckauf ist herrlich).

Nach dem hysterischen und übermäßig theatralischen Wonder Wheel folgt der ruhige und zivilere Streifen A Rainy Day in New York, der vor allem durch seine Old-School-Atmosphäre, die sympathisch geschriebenen Charaktere und das flotte Drehbuch beeindruckt. Auf der einen Seite steht der ernsthafte, intellektuelle Gatsby, der sich an längst vergangene Zeiten klammert. Auf der anderen Seite steht die leicht alberne und skurrile Ashleigh, ein Mädchen aus Arizona, das sich für New York begeistert. Beide erleben unabhängig voneinander in der verregneten Metropole viele Überraschungen, die nur das Leben selbst schreiben kann - oder der Meister des Dialogs Allen selbst, der auch mit über achtzig Jahren beweist, dass er noch in den besten Jahren ist und den Zuschauer natürlich zu unterhalten weiß

Sonntag, ich habe Namenstag, was sollte ich also mit meiner Liebsten anderes tun als ins Kino gehen und den neuen Film von Woody Allen anschauen, dessen Vertrieb sich durch eine Affäre verspätete, die viele Künstler in den USA betraf? Woody Allen bleibt für immer mein Lieblingsregisseur und Drehbuchautor, und wenn das sein letztes Werk gewesen sein sollte, dann ist es mehr als eine würdige Verabschiedung von einer unendlich langen Karriere. Ein melancholisch-romantischer klassischer Woody-Cocktail mit intelligentem Humor, zahlreichen Sprüchen, bei denen ein recht anständiges faktografisches Wissen seiner Zuschauer und Fans gefragt ist, ein Gemisch aus toller Musik, Kamera, der unvergleichlichen Atmosphäre seiner Lieblingsstadt und, was nicht zu vergessen ist - aus hervorragenden Leistung einer jüngeren Schauspielergeneration. Chalamet und Fanning ergänzen sich hervorragend, und mich persönlich überrascht sehr nett der eher actiongeladene Liev Schreiber. Und ich habe mir den Kopf darüber zerbrochen, welche Rolle Woody Kelly Rohrbach zuweist, hm, hm, hm, na klar, das hätte mir einfallen können. :-)

Woody Allen cannot be denied a unique style and, above all, a remarkable flair for natural dialogue, which he uses to demonstrate his characters' motives in a very sensitive and kind way. Although his latest film is set in the big-city backdrop of present-day New York, there is an ever-present kind of warm retro atmosphere that can be interpreted as one of Woody's other nostalgic sighs of relief, or as a benevolent hope. A hope that even in these overexposed times it pays to listen to the voice of one's heart, despite social pressures or expectations from one's immediate surroundings. In fact, A Rainy Day in New York is one of Allen's most optimistic films. While it takes place in a kind of bitterly melancholic haze, it contains no heated or emotionally draining conflicts. Just a pleasant film that caresses the soul and the heart.

Woody Allen, a tireless cinematic storyteller with a wonderful sense of poetry, restraint, and comic detail, tries to present New York in all its beauty, attractiveness, nakedness, and depravity through a newly-in-love couple full of ideals. However, the young couple pays for their emotional immaturity. With this film, Allen proves once again that he is one of the masters of dialogue and multi-layered stories. (75%)
