Teodor Kuhn's feature debut is inspired by a true criminal case that happened in Slovakia in 2005. The suspects in the attack against a Bratislava university student were a gang of Neo-Nazis, but the mistakes and failures by the police and judicial system complicated arresting the culprits. The film reflects the devastated family's fight for justice, and also the state of society today. (Febiofest)

Ein Drama, welches die Zuschauer*innen eher dank der beunruhigenden Geschichte, welche von wahren Ereignissen inspiriert wurde, gefangen nimmt, als wegen einem durcharbeiteten Drehbuch oder der Gestaltung (das Drehbuch war beim ähnlichen slowakischen Film Let There Be Light kreativer). Der Film hat eine gute Besetzung und gute Schauspielleistungen. Als größten Schwachpunkt sehe ich den vereinfacht dargestellten Gerichtsprozess, welcher der Höhepunkt des Films sein sollte – auch emotional. Es ist aber sehr gut, dass über diese Ereignisse in der Slowakei Filme entstehen. Sie werden zu einem wichtigen Zeugnis für nächste Generationen von Slowakinnen und Slowaken, wenn der Staat zu einem besseren Land wird. [3Kino Fest]

Apart from the final trial, which smacks of absurdity at times, By a Sharp Knife feels very realistic. Only it's all a bit tired. I can't shake the impression that a more talented and experienced director could have turned the strong subject into a truly worthwhile film. (65%)
