Professor Barbenfouillis, der Vorsitzende der Astronomischen Gesellschaft, will eine Forschungsreise zum Mond unternehmen. Mit sechs weiteren Gelehrten besteigt er eine gigantische Kapsel, die von einer großen Kanone ins Weltall geschossen wird. Nachdem die Abenteurer problemlos auf dem Erdtrabanten gelandet sind, sehen sie, wie die Erde aufgeht, überstehen einen Schneesturm und werden von Seleniten, seltsamen menschenähnlichen Wesen, die wie Krustentiere gepanzert sind, gefangen genommen. Doch es gelingt ihnen, zu fliehen, und sie können an Bord der Kapsel zurückkehren. In großer Eile lassen sie sich mit ihrem Fluggerät ins Leere stürzen, und ihre Kapsel fällt auf die Erde zurück. Die Heimkehr der Wissenschaftler wird mit einem großen Fest begeistert gefeiert. (Verleiher-Text)

Charming, adorable, impressive. Words can't describe it, it has to be seen, but I can't help but share at least a few sentences: The camera is static, the whole film consists of only 14 shots, full of strange little people and cardboard backdrops that are simply delightful. From the model of the spaceship to the surface of the moon and its inhabitants, everything bears the traces of Meliés's enormous imagination, full of wonderfully naive ideas. And the moon-people, they are simply adorable. The film is short, but it will leave an indelible mark on you. And the effects? They have lost none of their charm even after a century. 101 years, four generations... how is it possible?

Es war wirklich toll, die restaurierte und kolorierte Version auf der großen Leinwand zu sehen. Die neue Musik von der Band AIR kam mir in der Anfangsszene fast ungehörig vor. Dem Rest von Die Reise zum Mond hat sie aber eine beachtenswert verspielte Stimmung verliehen (der Film hat so etwas natürlich nicht gebraucht).___PS: Dieses Jahr habe ich den Film wieder im Kino gesehen, diesmal mit der Musik von Jeff Mills. Dem großen Ausflug von Méliès fehlt auch nach 115 Jahren nichts.

For any film enthusiast, this is as beautiful an experience as watching the first wink of a newborn baby. Immortal nostalgia that the effects of time will never erode :-)

Yes, it's very old, yes, it's basically like a theater, but in this film you can see a lot how these foundations shaped the film and actually the genre. The scenes that are here are repeated in other movies, the motifs that you see here influence culture - not only film - up to the present day. In this legendary work, it is possible to find elements that were used, for example, in Tintin. The film has funny scenes for its time, which have the right impact even to this day. Although the film is 14 minutes long, it is incredibly extravagant, epic, even though everything happened actually on one scene, where only the scenery changed. Méliès also created a colored version, which was restored in the new millennium and it is also possible to watch it. Hand coloring in such an old film is something truly unique. Moreover, the film manages to amaze in terms of special effects as well, because for example, the killing of the Selenites is really technically well done.
