1963, zur Zeit des Kalten Krieges. Die stumme Elisa (Sally Hawkins) ist nachts als Putzkraft in einem amerikanischen Geheimlabor beschäftigt. Eines Tages wird ein menschlich anmutendes Amphibienwesen aus dem Amazonas eingeliefert. Über Zeichensprache baut Elisa eine enge Beziehung zu der Kreatur auf. Als die Experimente des sadistischen Agent Strickland (Michael Shannon) zur Folter werden, will sie das Wesen von seinen Qualen befreien. Mit Kollegin Zelda (Octavia Spencer) , ihrem besten Freund Giles (Richard Jenkins) und dem Wissenschaftler Dr. Hoffstetler (Michael Stuhlbarg) heckt Elisa einen verwegenen Plan aus. (ORF)
