Matt Lee Whitlock sorgt im verschlafenen Floridastädtchen Banyan Key als respektierter Polizeichef für Ordnung. In sein Privatleben aber zieht Chaos ein. Obwohl er noch immer seine Frau Alex liebt, von der er getrennt lebt, stürzt er sich in eine heiße Affäre mit seiner verheirateten Jugendliebe Ann Harrison. Als bei Ann Krebs festgestellt wird, und nur eine teure Therapie ihr Leben verlängern kann, unterschlägt Matt fast eine halbe Million Dollar eingefrorenes Drogengeld. Und Ann überschreibt ihrem Lover ihre Lebensversicherung. Doch schon vom nächsten Morgen an ist es Matt, dem die Zeit davonläuft. Nach Brandstiftung durch einen Unbekannten findet man nur noch die verkohlten Leichen von Ann und ihrem gewalttätigen Ehemann. Als ausgerechnet Matt's Frau Alex als Detective der Mordkommission Miami zu ermitteln beginnt, ist auch für Matt die Lunte gelegt. Kann er nicht verhindern, dass seine Frau alle Beweise findet, die ihn als Hauptverdächtigen belasten, und gleichzeitig die wahren Mörder aufspüren, geht auch sein Leben in Flammen auf... Ein Film zum Entspannen. Das attraktive, sonnige Florida mit einem kitschig schönen Himmel, wo sogar der Polizeichef nicht das Strandhemd auszieht. Schöne braune Frauen, ein spannender und komplizierter Krimi-Plot, der aber zum Glück ein bisschen vorhersehbar ist. Zum Glück deshalb, weil der Film kein zweiter Die üblichen Verdächtigen sein soll, sondern ein sexy Oldschool-Film zum Entspannen. Die Ambitionen wurden erfüllt.

An easygoing film with an unmistakable Florida atmosphere. Denzel is a cop again, and this time he’s got his hands full. A very pleasant hour and a half.

Through and through a mediocre affair that is only kept afloat by Denzel Washington alone. You just can't help but cheer him on. Almost nothing is utilized of the great thematic potential of a police investigator investigating himself and therefore is always one step ahead of his colleagues. The exception is the scene in the middle of the movie in the police station lasting about fifteen minutes. In this scene, everything works one hundred and ten percent, and the tension could be cut with a knife. Unfortunately, this is the only such powerful scene in the movie, and besides it, there are just a lot of solidly done clichés.

A decent crime drama, visually attractive, without any added value or anything extra. I mean, it fizzles out after a few days.
