Samuels unbeschwertes Single-Leben an der Côte d'Azur findet jäh ein Ende. Kristin aus London taucht auf, drückt ihm ihr Baby Gloria in die Hand und reist ebenso überraschend ab. Samuel folgt ihr gleich nach England, kann sie dort aber nicht finden. Mit einem Job als Stuntman hält er sich über Wasser und richtet sich liebevoll mit seiner Tochter ein. Um Glorias Sehnsucht nach ihrer Mutter zu stillen, erfindet er die abenteuerlichsten Geschichten von deren Leben als Geheimagentin. Acht Jahre später steht Kristin plötzlich vor der Tür und will ihre Tochter nach New York mitnehmen. (ORF)

For me, Omar Sy is probably the foremost French actor of family comedies with a hint of contemporary drama. Any movie that he appears in is a joy to watch. By the way, the homage to Eddie Murphy was quite appropriate since they look awfully alike. And with his positive approach to acting along with his personality, he couldn’t possibly spoil a movie, including this one. Two Is a Family is a beautifully filmed human, amusing story that’s worth waiting for. It's a bit of a drag, but you get such a pleasant, warm feeling watching the movie that you don't really care, because this kind sense of humor can caress your soul.

Definitive proof that Omar Sy is the king of dramedies with a social subtext. The Intouchables could have been a coincidence, Samba could have been god luck, but this time it's a sure bet. On his home turf, this walking breath of optimism simply can't be surpassed. And even though the twists may seem expected and overly emotional, a smaller but more important idea about fully enjoying life emerges throughout the whole story, opening one's eyes. And that's when tears really start to sting.

Nichts gegen süßliche rührselige Filme, aber "I dva jsou rodina" ist eine manipulative und oberflächliche Kalkulation, die bereits von Anfang an unangenehm zerrissen ist zwischen dem Versuch, eine ernsthafte Beziehung-Eltern-Sonde im Stil zeitgenössischer europäischer Dramen zu sein, und der unpassenden Wahl einer Hollywood-Komödienstilisierung, wobei sich diese beiden gegensätzlichen Ansätze gegenseitig stören. Das Ergebnis ist, als ob die Macher eine neue Version von "Kramer gegen Kramer" drehen wollten, aber eher wie "Der große Vater mit Sandler" auf die Zuschauer wirken möchten, was jeglichen Eindruck von Realismus zuverlässig zunichte macht. Das erste Viertelstunde ist im Grunde genommen noch super, der Rest wirkt jedoch künstlich, eine krampfhafte Komik, die zu bitter für eine Komödie und zu seicht für ein Drama ist, durchschaubar und unglaubwürdig.

Die Franzosen können Dramen und Komödien machen, und sie sind auch gut im Genre-Mix. Plötzlich Papa ist ein eher ernster Film, aber er enthält auch mehr als einen humorvollen Moment, vor allem durch Antoine Bertrand als Bernie. Schade, dass ich die Synchronfassung gesehen habe, denn dadurch ging die englisch-französische Interaktion zwischen einigen der Figuren verloren, die auch eine Quelle des Witzes war. In den ersten zwei Dritteln dachte ich, dass ich dem Film solide drei Sterne geben würde, aber im letzten Drittel ging es noch einmal richtig zur Sache, und am Ende spielten die Filmemacher mit den Emotionen - und das gefiel mir außerordentlich gut. Plötzlich Papa ist keine Komödie im Sinne einer Lachkomödie - es ist vielmehr die humorvolle Geschichte eines Vaters und einer Tochter, die trotz vieler Hindernisse versuchen, ihr Leben gemeinsam in vollen Zügen zu genießen.

Die Franzosen zeigten sich wieder von ihrer hervorragenden Seite, einen so ergreifenden und amüsanten Film drehen, das können nur sie. Ich kann mir vorstellen, was eine amerikanische Produktion mit diesem Sujet und diesem Drehbuch gemacht hätte. Omar Sy sicherte sich in Frankreich dank Ziemlich beste Freunde einen Vorzugsplatz in Filmen ähnlicher Prägung, alle anderen ergänzen ihn gut, und die zarte und ätherische Clémence Poésy hat sich ein für allemal hübsch entlarvt. Nach längerer Zeit wieder einmal ein guter Film, im Falle einer französischen Produktion ist dies zu einem Großteil eine Wette auf Sicherheit.

For the second time in two days, I had to turn off the cynical bastard in me to enjoy an endearingly heart-aching movie. If I had been looking forward to a great comedy, I would have been disappointed, but as a drama, it works perfectly. I don't know why, but I like Omar Sy, whether he's playing an unexpected dad, a caretaker, a cook, or a gangster. He's accompanied by superb Clémence Poésy here, and it sure is a success. Maybe I also liked the film because I was expecting more of a goofy flick with a lovey-dovey happy ending. Instead, I got a drama that kept me entertained and the two hours just raced by. I hope the French filmmakers don't plan on making more of this sort of thing, I'd hate to change my negative attitude towards the French cinema.

The story of this film is a bit expected, there's nothing all that downright surprising about it, but you have to give it credit for being so well cast that it just sweeps you away. Omar Sy is such a great actor that he can handle any scene, whether it's a hotshot, a father loving his daughter, or an overwhelmed man. Everything works for him perfectly.

Compared to the Mexican film Instructions Not Included, Two Is a Family has a much better cast. Especially the likable Omar Sy and the charming Gloria Colston deserve credit for the fact that the plot moves along nicely. It is not as funny as the Mexican film, but the dramatic storyline is skillfully interwoven with slightly comedic elements, while the atmosphere is perfectly underscored by a very good soundtrack. Which I definitely find more appealing than some big spectacle. (70%)

The French have managed to do something again: to arouse every possible emotion in a person. You'll laugh, you'll be moved, and you'll also be furious and will feel like killing someone. I think the anger got the better of me. Some people, in this case Gloria's mother, don't have an ounce of shame in them. She has no shame, she has a lot of balls for just walking in and claiming something she has absolutely no right to, or I guess she does things according to the French justice system. Yeah, that's what she'd like, to put the baby down, leave the most challenging years of parenting to the father, and then walk in years later and "hey there, I'm your mommy, so now I'm taking you, ok?" It is a beautiful film, with an important message, but I’m still angry :)
