IO

While browsing Netflix production, I could not miss the fact that Netflix is a fan of low budget sci-fi movies – which I definitely appreciate. Too bad that the beginning of IO looks like the screenwriter copied it from The Martian, and when Anthony Mackie, who’s probably supposed to keep the movie afloat, enters the screen, the whole thing gets so unbearably boring that it makes you count the minutes until the end. Cheap sci-fi in the style of adapt or die. CO2 and other greenhouse gases have flooded the planet and those who could have flown to a space station near Jupiter's moon Io, except for a few naifs and scientists who are researching whether the situation is permanent or whether bees and pigs can adapt. Then, out of nowhere, a strange, grim-faced man named Micah (Anthony Mackie) appears at the base of a young scientist (Margaret Qualley). Unfortunately, apart from a small storm, the arrival of a balloon and a few unpleasant truths, nothing much happens. The performances are alright, but no one can really excel in an average story. It’s OK to watch after a Sunday lunch. PS: Elon flew to space. (18.02.2023)

Der Film ist langweilig. Aus dem Stoff konnte eine gute kurze Erzählung werden. Für einen Spielfilm ist es aber zu wenig. Das, was überraschend sein soll, weiß das Publikum schon längst. Und das, was die Zuschauer*innen berühren soll, ruft in ihnen keine Emotionen hervor, weil sie froh sind, dass sie nicht eingeschlafen sind. Nichtsdestoweniger würde ich Margaret Qualley gerne noch einmal sehen, aber in einem guten Film. (10.02.2019)
