Viago (379 Jahre), Deacon (183 Jahre), Vla- dislav (862 Jahre) und Peter (8.000 Jahre) haben viel Spaß in ihrer barock verlebten Altbauvilla in Wellington. Vor der Kamera berichten sie freimütig und auch etwas eitel über ihre bizarren Gepflogenheiten. Wie in jeder WG gibt es Konflikte, etwa um die Frage, wer für den sich türmenden Abwasch zuständig ist. Doch jede Nacht ist Party, und meistens wird es da richtig blutig. Das Filmteam begleitet die Vampire auf ihren Ausflügen in die Clubs ihrer Stadt, wo sie Kontakte pflegen, sich mit den Werwölfen zoffen und für jungfräulichen Nachschub sorgen. Ganz nebenbei ist das auch ein ironischer Blick auf unsere urbane Gesellschaft. Für die Garantie ewiger Jugend durch einen Vampirbiss sind Menschen gerne bereit, sich anzudienen. Die Vampire wissen diese Sehnsucht der Sterblichen für ihre Zwecke zu nutzen. (Luna Filmverleih)

(49th KVIFF) Cute vampires (and werewolves, zombies and other similar creatures) in an incredibly funny mockumentary comedy. The midnight screening was worth it and the excited audience added to the experience. The film ends before it manages to build any sort of solid story through that relentless series of jokes. Those who say that a sitcom format would be more suitable for these vampires are right, after all, this is film is already a sitcom episode stretched to 90 minutes.

I can’t think of any other word than “genius”. What We Do in the Shadows is an absolutely genius parody that earnestly makes fun of vampires and, here and there, werewolves. Not of particular movies or particular characters, just vampires in and of themselves. And after watching some of the scenes, I believe that they’ll become legendary, granted that the movie makes its way into the world. Who would have thought that it was filmed by New Zealand authors? I watched this for the Challenge Tour 2015.

Funny and innovative. Waititi makes wonderful fun of the vampire genre. It lacks fluency and some of the jokes fall flat, but nevertheless it’s a great fun. P.S.: The best dude here is the software analyst!

Eine Komödie bis über den Tod hinaus, die aber alle denkbaren Regeln des Vampir-Genres einhält. Und das macht sie noch besser. Die Vampire waschen zwar ungern Geschirr, sie wischen Staub mit leblosen Körpern, können keine Musikinstrumente spielen und ziehen sich auch ziemlich schrecklich an, wenn sie ausgehen, aber wer möchte nach dem Abspann nicht gerne einer von ihnen werden? Wahrscheinlich nur irgendein Werwolf, der Flöhe im Fell hat.

I love it. It has its flaws, and the trio of über-cool vampires have their weaker moments in the middle, but it's impossible not to love this peculiar documentary (sorry, mockumentary). Waititi and Clement took it all the way and serve the viewer with a uniquely funny and detailed cross-section of vampire mythology, in which they manage to present all the otherwise stale motifs about sleeping in coffins or burning in the sunlight in an original and effective way, so that the story doesn't just run on quick gags – each supporting character has an important role to play in terms of revealing the whole well thought-out fictional world or the adaptation of the vampires to modern times. The whole thing would certainly work best as a multi-part sitcom, and I’m giving it 5* mainly due to my innate sympathy for Waititi's sense of humour, but it's still great fun and, from a certain point of view, a fountain of wisdom – the housemates' problems around washing and cleaning up reflect quite faithfully the cohabitation of university students in a shared flat. I could tell a story or two myself.

Perhaps the most fun and inventive horror comedy I’ve been honoured to see in the past few years. And it stays equally funny each time I watch it. I wish for a sequel so badly!

Pseudodokument über Vampire, der geschickt in Vampirstereotypen trifft und erfolgreich die Barrieren durch kluge Parodien ihres Lebensstils und ihrer täglichen Routine durchbricht. Es passiert mir nicht oft, dass ich bei einem Film so lange laut lachen muss, dass das Lachen nahtlos in Lachen über den nächsten Witz übergeht. Und wenn es doch passiert, halte ich es für eine Seltenheit. Hier passierte es mir ständig, denn es gibt dutzende, wenn nicht sogar hunderte gute (und oft auch sehr anspruchsvolle) Witze.

A documentary about a community of undead in New Zealand. I didn't really feel like watching it, but the very first minute made me change my mind. The budget was obviously not huge, but it made the film all the better. I haven't had such a blast in a long time. I was even sorry it was over. All the characters were great, but Vlad and Jackie were my favorites. Great entertainment that I recommend to almost everyone.

I was still expecting it to be even funnier. However, it must be acknowledged that it is truly immensely original and that the pop culture humor doesn't shoot cheaply, but on the contrary, in line with the overall tone of the movie. The humor in this film is overall good and after a long time, we finally have a mockumentary that makes sense.
