Darren Aronofskys preisgekröntes Regiedebüt, der Science-Fiction-Thriller Pi, ist eine eindrückliche Reise in die geniale Gedankenwelt des verschrobenen Mathematikgenies Maximillian Cohen (Sean Gullette). Max, hochintelligent und ständig von innerer Unruhe getrieben, steht kurz vor der wichtigsten Entdeckung seines Lebens. In den letzten zehn Jahren versuchte er, das numerische System zu entschlüsseln, das sich hinter der perfekten Struktur des geordneten Chaos befindet und das scheinbar auch das System der weltweiten Börsen beeinflußt. Als Max kurz vor der Lösung steht, versinkt die Welt um ihn herum im Chaos: Er wird einerseits von einer aggressiven, skrupellosen Wall Street Firma verfolgt, die die Macht an sich reißen will, sowie von einer religiösen, jüdischen Sekte, die das Geheimnis der Kabbalah lüften möchte. In der Hoffnung, dem Wahnsinn, der sich vor ihm ausbreitet, zu widerstehen, verstärkt er seine Bemühungen, den Code zu knacken. Große existenzielle Wahrheiten, versteckt in mathematischen Gleichungen, die man scheinbar nicht lösen kann. Und in einer effektvollen Filmemacher-Darstellung. Mit der Kombination aus dem Schwarz-Weiß-Bild und den schrillen Tönen vollbringt Darren Aronofsky, so ähnlich wie in Requiem for a Dream, Wunder.

Insane weirdness that sucks you in at the beginning and spits you out absolutely exhausted by the end. It’s one of those films that I don’t really know how to judge, I could give it two or even four stars with a clean conscience. The combination of black and white images, psychotic music and the various noises in the background works wonders, while the short runtime makes Pi something relatively bearable. I’ll never watch it again, though, I’m not a fan of maths, and letting someone make me feel depressed voluntarily isn’t among favourite activities, either. My rating is something between 40 and 80 percent…

3.141592... Our school teacher claimed that math is fun - but, as Aronofsky proves here in this stylized rollercoaster ride, she was lying, because math can make you go completely psycho. A very Lynch-style movie and, whether or not it corresponds to your taste in movies, it will certainly leave a deep impression in you. Primarily thanks to the extraordinarily portrayed atmosphere of paranoia (or whatever that feeling is called). While the viewer experience isn’t so intense throughout the movie, you will be haunted by Pi for a long time after. Probably for as long as it takes you to say the entire value of π.

Eine weitere Enttäuschung von Darren Aronofsky. Ich kann es kaum glauben, dass dieselbe Person den tollen Film The Fountain gedreht hat. Pi ist ein dummer Streifen. Ein unsinniger Film von einem Mathematik-Genie, dessen Anfälle so wie die Halluzinationen in Requiem for a Dream aussehen (sie sind auch so schrecklich lang und vorhersehbar und man bekommt von ihnen Kopfschmerzen) und das sich die ganze Zeit mit Zahlen befasst, welche 99% der Zuschauer*innen höchstwahrscheinlich nicht verstehen. Der Regisseur gibt mit ihnen aber keine Ruhe. Wahrscheinlich wollte er dem Publikum den Eindruck vermitteln, dass dieser seltsame Freak wirklich ein Genie ist. Er will etwas herausfinden, aber niemand weiß, was es ist. Die einzige Ausnahme ist sein ähnlich verrückter Professor. Und irgendeine Firma, die ihn ständig zu erreichen versucht. Und eine geheime jüdische Sekte, welche die gleiche Zahl wie unser Held sucht, weil ihre Bedeutung… eine stupide Pointe ist. Ich musste mich wirklich überwinden, bis zum Ende durchzuhalten – bis zum ungewollt lustigen (d. h. fürchterlich lächerlichen und selbstparodistischen) Ende. Ein so kurzer Film und dabei war er so lang. Danke wenigstens für das Schwarzweißbild, für das ich eine Schwäche habe.__PS: Mathe habe ich nie gemocht, aber das hängt mit der Bewertung nicht zusammen.

I like self-destructive characters and Darren Aronofsky managed to write a script that presents such a character. It is already clear from the beginning that it cannot end well, but that doesn't matter at all because there is a progression, and it is incredible. Darren achieved an absolutely incredible capture of the crazy mind just by using the camera and editing. The black and white format complements it perfectly. This is definitely one of those debuts that are worth it.

What Aronofsky started here, he later perfected in Requiem for a Dream. While the directorial invention here falls far short of the quality of his later work, it gives a hint of the direction Darren Aronofsky's work would take. Once again, a very compelling theme, this time about the boundary between genius and the pursuit of knowledge that turns into uncontrollable madness, is wrapped in a nerve-wracking atmosphere through which the viewer is introduced to the shaky and ever-worsening psychological state of the protagonist. 85%
