Der Tischler Gepetto (Christian Rub) hat weder Frau noch Kinder. Aus Einsamkeit schnitzt er sich eine Holzpuppe und wünscht sich von Herzen, dass diese lebendig wird. Als eine Fee das hört, beschließt sie, dem Mann zu helfen: Sie erweckt Pinocchio (Dickie Jones) zum Leben. Aber um von der Puppe zu einem echten Jungen zu werden, muss Pinocchio einige Abenteuer bestehen. Die Grille Jiminy unterstützt ihn dabei. (Puls 8)

Even today, 64 years after its creation, this film has a very fresh and funny appeal. Disney enriched the story with lots of small animations (e.g. a detailed rendering of Geppetto's workshop with lots of comical cuckoo clocks and cute gimmicks) and songs, which received a soundtrack release to great acclaim. And it doesn't matter at all that Disney "Hollywoodised" or, as it was called then, "Disney-ized" Collodi's story and turned the character of the originally naughty, bratty Pinocchio into a good, naive boy by adding a cat and a fish that were not originally in the book.

2. Disney-Spielfilm Verglichen mit Schneewittchen ist Pinocchio ein schwacher Abklatsch. Die Wege von Disney-Spielfilmen waren schon immer verschlungen. Ja, wir haben einen literarischen Klassiker als Vorbild, eine süße Katze, einen Fisch und eine Grille. Aber das Drehbuch ist nicht so schlüssig wie das von Schneewittchen, die Lieder vergisst man leicht wieder, die personifizierten Tiere sind auf dem Niveau von Menschen und dann auch wieder nicht, und die Geschichte über die Esel ist unnötig grausam und ohne jedes Ende. Carlo Collodi würde sich wahrscheinlich wundern. Leider sind de Schönheiten der rotoskopischen Zauberfee nicht alles.

Der Film hat mir sehr gut gefallen, aber zur meiner vollen Zufriedenheit fehlt noch etwas. Vielleicht nur eine weitere Vorführung, wer weiß. Was ich jedoch am meisten schätze, ist der Mut (falls man es so nennen kann), mit dem Disney die völlig abschreckende Szene von Pleasure Island gemacht hat, in der Kinder Bier trinken, Zigarren rauchen, Billard spielen und sich so in Esel verwandeln. Ein wirklich sensationeller Teil. Die traditionellere Musicalszene "I've Got No Strings" ist aber auch sehr gut, ganz zu schweigen von dem tollen Kater Figaro.

Together with the three years older Snow White, this is the godfather of all animated films that set the standard by which the genre is still judged today, both in terms of the technical aspect, which is incredibly charming, colourful and natural for its time, and in terms of an entertaining story about love and heroism, which has become a top priority not only for Disney. Objectively, I have to admit that this is not the pinnacle of the studio's work and there are so many holes in the plot that not even the knowledge of an enthusiastic children's audience can patch them all up, but it’s still a ready-made treasure for fans of the genre and for every parent looking for something original, lively and filmed with undisguised love for their kids – and Pinocchio fulfils all this to a T. 80%

Studio Walt Disney can have whatever access it wants to templates and stories in general, it can be very cautious about what it depicts, especially in recent years, but it simply cannot be denied that it created such animated films in the past that are simply unforgettable. And "Pinocchio" is one of them. A beautiful story transformed into a beautiful animated version.
