Broadchurch

Als Detektivgeschichte ist das ganze in gewisser Hinsicht ein Fail, weil das typische "feige Modell eines Kerzenhalters" verwendet wird, ablenkende Motive gehäuft werden und man den Mörder lediglich dann errät, wenn man Erfahrungen mit einer ähnlichen Genre-Taktik ins Spiel bringt. Was ich allerdings nicht gerade tun wollte, zumal ich hoffte, dass die Filmemacher dieses Manöver meiden würden. Der Aufbau von Figuren, die Ebene episodischer Handlungsstränge sowie die Konzeption der Hauptfiguren obliegen nämlich einer höheren Ebene, ebenso wie die Verarbeitung, die sich satter Farb- und Lichtkontraste, düsterer Halbdetails zum Charakterisieren der Figuren in der nasskalten Landschaft sowie asymmetrischer Umrahmung bedient. Ja, da erinnert man sich Wallander sowie den nordischen Detektiv - auch dank des Modells der Detektivhandlung sowie des verborgenen Motivs hierin. Broadchurch gelingt am besten das, wo er sich daran hält, was ihm am meisten gelingt - eine gut beschriebene Gemeinschaft, die aufgewirbelte Oberfläche des übermäßig friedlichen Lebens, mehrdeutige Arbeit mit dem Inzestmotiv und vor allem exzellente Detektivfiguren, welche dem Model eines nordischen Assozialen Ehre gebühren, es aber interessanterweise in etwas sentimentalere Inselnoten übersetzen. Tennants Rattengesicht passt da super hinein, ebenso wie die stimmt genau überein, ebenso wie das alltäglich anmutende Gesicht von Olivia Colman. Am Ende entsteht bei mir der unwiderlegbare Eindruck, dass Broadchurch als Drama gar etwas besser funktioniert denn Kommissarin Lund (vor allem wird da nicht so viel herumgesucht und es bieten sich auf psychologischer und sozialer Ebene interessantere Perspektiven an - Medien, Community), jedoch als Detektivgeschichte ist es hier gelungen, die Marotten in acht Folgen loszuwerden. Diese Ausweichungen bekümmern einen, obgleich klar durchs Format vorgegeben sind. Wie dem auch sei, emotional bin ich in diese Stadt bis mit Herz und Seele eingezogen. [85%] (26.01.2014)

An extract from a Danish gem in eight parts putting its money on melodrama instead of Scandi raw and rainy stylization. Which, in view of the theme, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s bad, but here we get those soundless, slow-motion shots with pretentiously touching/dramatic music or shooting against the setting sun so often that it gets tedious. The greatest difficulty is the concept itself; since they bet everything on the down-to-earth, psychological aspect which, instead of crime and its investigation (which is good, because you can deduce “who and why" beyond all doubt very early on and in fact the crime aspect of the series simply doesn’t work), focuses on the impact on the family of the bereaved and their surroundings and the consequences of the tragedy and coming to terms with it within the community, it is essential to have excellently written, three-dimensional characters who can stand up to being put under the microscope. And it has to be excellently cast. And although a few characters fit the bill, not all of them do by a long chalk. And those who come out of this the best remain merely characters; not one of them is a “alive" as the Birk Larsens in the Danish original mentioned above. The strongest aspect of the series is the genius loci of the village of Broadchurch. (22.05.2013)

Barely average as a crime series, excellent as a psychological drama. I was struck by how incredibly tense the atmosphere was, built on the perfectly portrayed psychology of the characters. Plus, the investigative tandem was an interesting choice of actors. Especially David Tennant gives a convincing performance. For the most part, the series doesn’t play on the viewers’ emotions, only at the very end do things slightly get out of hand. At one point I worried that Sauron had decided to attack Minas Tirith again. I was pleasantly surprised by the second season. I was expecting more murders to be solved to compete with Midsomer Murders. Instead, the story is split into two plotlines. The first one deals with the trial of Danny's killer and the second finally explains what happened at Sandbrook. The second season seems to be handled better than the first. Plus, the character of Ellie Miller gets more screen time, which is definitely not a bad thing. (21.10.2016)
