Ein Journalist will eine Story über Amerika schreiben und bekommt nichts auf die Reihe. Er tritt die Rückreise an und nimmt ungewollt die kleine Alice in seine Obhut. Mit ihr fährt er dann durchs Ruhrgebiet, um ihre Großmutter ausfindig zu machen. Der Journalist Philip Winter will eine Story über Amerika schreiben, bekommt aber außer einer Serie von Polaroids nichts auf die Reihe und tritt enttäuscht die Heimreise nach Deutschland an. Dabei lässt er sich widerwillig darauf ein, die kleine Alice in seine Obhut zu nehmen, weil ihre Mutter, die er am Tag vor seiner Abreise in New York kennenlernt, dort noch dringend etwas zu erledigen hat. In Amsterdam taucht die Mutter dann nicht mehr wie abgemacht auf und so machen sich Winter und Alice daran, im Ruhrgebiet Alices Großmutter zu finden. Auf der gemeinsamen Suche wandelt sich allmählich ihre anfängliche gegenseitige Ablehnung in eine herzliche Zuneigung. (BR Fernsehen)

By chance they meet. He wants to go home because he has a writer's block and is unable to write a single article, she was just returning from the USA to Europe with her mother. But her mother leaves her with him, a stranger. And so begins a surprisingly interesting and powerful road movie that seems like it will never end. Black and white suits him well.

A convenient connection of two worlds, two moments of human life. At the beginning, the main character drives through the USA - an alienated landscape, alone without deeper meaning or fulfillment in life, yet intensified by the surrounding and local (advertising) way of life. This is followed by a journey across The Netherlands and Germany - initially, the forced care for a child gives the main character feelings of satisfaction and a deeper reason for life. It has wonderful poetry, great cinematography and music, and Wim Wenders...
