Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero

Was für ein Film, ein anderer Ansatz zur Serie. Während man den ersten Teil als atmosphärisches Überlebensdrama im Wald betrachten kann und den zweiten Teil als komödiantischen Splatterfilm in einer Schule, kehrt der dritte Teil als Prequel zur Entstehung des zentralen Bösen zurück. Und seine Wurzeln liegen auf einer Insel, auf die, wie das Genre es vorschreibt, eine Gruppe von Playboy-Männern und einem Playmate kommen. Natürlich dauert es nicht lange und ihr Gewebe verlässt ihre Besitzer... Patient Zero ist nicht mehr voll von schwarzem Humor, sondern versucht eher, dem Zuschauer notwendiges Gore (das Zerschlagen eines Gehirns mit einem riesigen, schwarzen Penis) zu präsentieren und ihn gelegentlich in Spannung zu halten. Ein Beweis? Zum Beispiel das Eindringen in das Labor und der Abstieg in seine Untergründe. Der Streichersound gibt dann das Tempo vor, das erst im überraschend offenen Ende abflacht. Für mich also ein Trio starker Sterne und ich freue mich auf den Ausbruch. (06.02.2014)

Different from the previous two episodes, but I’m not complaining about that, I don’t care – actually, I’d consider a different approach to the template as a plus. What bothers me is that things become incredibly stupid after some time, especially considering how seriously the film takes itself. Patient Zero is relatively effective in some of the scenes (for instance, the underground sequence is nicely atmospheric, and the gore – for those who are into gore – is also good), but when you look at the bigger picture, it’s laughable, rather. Dime a dozen contagion horror, without any original ideas, which shouldn’t be a surprise coming from the director of the awful Altitude. And the one “memorable scene”, I’ve seen it somewhere, I think it was lifted from Excision. PS: I would give it two stars, but that’s what I gave the first one by Roth and this one is significantly worse. (09.02.2014)

"Cabin Fever" is not my favorite series and "Cabin Fever: Patient Zero" will not be my favorite movie, but there are things that I enjoyed about it. Besides the good and disgusting gore, there is, for example, the presence of Sean Astin, or quite interesting and functional changes in the environment. Compared to the second one, it felt very similar to me with bursts of a positive approach to the film. However, it still doesn't reach the average level. (25.05.2015)
