Burma, 1988. Aung San Suu Kyi verlässt Oxford, wo sie nach abgeschlossenem Studium mit ihrem Mann Michael eine Familie gegründet hat. Wegen einer schweren Erkrankung ihrer Mutter kehrt sie in ihr Heimatland zurück. Als Tochter eines ermordeten Politikers und einer Botschafterin war sie schon immer politisch engagiert. Als Leitfigur der gewaltfreien 'National League of Democracy' gewinnt sie 1990 die Wahlen gegen die skrupellos agierende Militär-Junta.
