1992, Bosnien und Herzegowina. Die Bosnierin Ajla und der Serbe Danijel verlieben sich Hals über Kopf ineinander. Ihr Glück ist nur von kurzer Dauer. Der Ausbruch des Bürgerkriegs entzweit die beiden. Er wird Soldat, sie landet als Muslima in einem Internierungslager. Dort versucht sie Danijel zu schützen, so gut er nur kann. Als er ihr zur Flucht verhilft, nimmt er sie bei sich auf. Frei ist Ajla dennoch nicht. Trotz ihrer Leidenschaft füreinander, bleibt zwischen den beiden das Misstrauen bestehen.
