Nach einem halbherzigen Selbstmordversuch wird Leonard, ein labiler Mann Mitte 30, von Passanten aus dem Wasser gefischt. Seine Eltern glauben, dass die nette Sandra, die aus einer befreundeten jüdischen Familie stammt, ihn von seinen schwermütigen Gedanken kurieren könnte. Leonard ist nicht ganz abgeneigt, aber Schmetterlinge im Bauch hat er nicht. Das ändert sich, als er die attraktive, neue Nachbarin Michelle kennenlernt. Die drogenabhängige Blondine steckt aber in einer quälenden Affäre mit dem reichen Anwalt Ronald. Für Leonard empfindet sie eigentlich nur geschwisterliche Gefühle, vielleicht sogar ein bisschen mehr. Welche von beiden ist für Leonard die Richtige? (ARD)

Two Lovers is a slow, cold and in some ways very classically styled romance that deals not only with love, but also with suicide attempts, bipolar disorder and abortion. The tragedy of the characters consists in the awareness of how they are (in their own words) “fucked up”, in spite of which they want to be supportive of each other. However, it will be difficult for two unstable individuals to carry on a relationship. Gray uses long, drawn-out shots that give us enough time and space to penetrate the world of the troubled protagonists. That is not easy to do, as the film combines the linear development of the story with variations of certain situations (with one girlfriend, with another girlfriend, with Leonard in a manic phase, with Leonard in a depressive phase), so in places it may seem that the narrative is not going anywhere. I appreciate the fact that today someone has the courage to shoot mature dramas that the viewer has to meet halfway, though I also understand why there are not more films likes this in America today than there were in the 1970s. We have become accustomed to unpretentiousness and working with allusions, and it is thus more difficult for us to get in tune with such a style. 75%

Ich bin immer wieder überrascht, was für Filme sich unter der Genrebezeichnung romantische Komödie verbergen können. Denn in Joaquin Phoenix' Fall handelt es sich um eine reguläre Vorbereitung auf Joker oder eine Ausprägung seiner männlichen instabilen geistigen Gesundheit. Im Fall von Gwyneth Paltrow und Vinessa Shaw handelt es sich einfach um Gegensätze. Es ist kein sanfter Film, nicht einmal zum Lachen, es ist ein Film aus der Sammlung Dem Leben abgeschaut. Sehr realistisch in den Situationen, sehr realistisch in den Lebensentscheidungen, vielleicht rührend naiv im Finale.

A ninimalistic (setting, location, music) intimate drama with character actors (best one being Vinessa Shaw) and an average plot. James Gray has a talent for developing personal connections and somewhat manages to stay on the track of realism. Based on the trailer, I expected more genuine emotions and fewer positive moments, but in the end, it was exactly the opposite. It’s still a well-thought-out piece, expressed clearly, and the plot is presented comprehensibly, in a sufficiently dense form. Definitely a rising trend.

"Verlasst nie jemanden, der euch liebt, für jemanden, der euch gefällt, denn der, der euch gefällt, verlässt euch für denjenigen, den er liebt.“ Genau an diesem Zitat inspirierten sich wohl die Autoren dieses Streifens. Zumindest ich verließ das Kino mit dieser Pointe, die in mir ein trauriges und bedrückendes Gefühl hinterließ. Ganz sicher wäre es ewig schade für den internationalen Film, wenn Joaquin Phoenix wirklich die Schauspielerei an den Nagel hängen würde, er dominiert die Schauspielbesetzung und leistet wirklich Herausragendes. Gwyneth und Vinessa stellen geeignete Gegensätze dar, trotzdem reichen sie nicht ganz an Joaquin heran. Vinessa hat mir als Joshs böse Freundin in 40 Tage und 40 Nächte besser gefallen.
